Posting about software will no longer be tolerated without moderator approval.

Hello everyone! Recently we’ve had a surge in posts about new software, tools, extensions, and apps for music collecting. When the subreddit is full of software posts, posts with questions and important topics are buried and missed. In addition, many of these tools were quickly made using AI. For many reasons, these “vibe coded” apps will not be tolerated on this subreddit anymore.

If you made a tool or project that you want to share: please message the moderators for approval before posting. Sending proof that the software was coded by you or another human is also recommended but not required.

Some of these vibe code project posts slip through the cracks. If you come across them, please help by reporting the post for violating Rule 4.

Thank you for your understanding,

Thousands of Illegal Concert Tapes Recorded Over 40 Years Are Now Available for Free, and Artists Keep Endorsing Them

• Upvotes

Every recording in this archive is technically illegal under federal law, and the collector kept that fact quiet for four decades because exposure meant lawsuits he couldn't afford to fight.

But as the tapes began to disintegrate, he felt pushed to release them online for free anyway, and the artists whose performances he captured have responded in ways nobody involved seems willing to discuss on the record.

Several of these recordings preserve shows from rooms that closed years ago and legendary bands whose reputations were still quite unknown at the time.

Tag Management for Mobile?

• Upvotes

Was curious to know whether such a thing existed that would allow me to be able to tag my songs/albums just as I would on desktop but for mobile. It only hit me now that I've been doing it all this time on desktop through out the years but never thought to ask whether there was something reliable for my phone. FWIW, I use an iPhone.

Good free flac player - locally stored files on iphone?

• Upvotes

I noticed my ipad didn't have a flac player. Not an emergency as my android phone has a couple.

My current phone has a potential crack in the screen. I was considering going to the darkside for the first time but a good flac player will be the decision maker. I'd want to use it to play my songs in my car and I don't want to convert any of them. If I convert them then I have to keep track of two sets of music - I get a new song in flac then I have to convert it and put it in the right folder - not gonna happen.

Does anyone have a recommendation? (other than converting the files). To be clear I do not want to stream them. I'd like to be able to play them without any wifi or cell or network.

Thanks.

What's the best audio file format?

Post image
196 Upvotes

I usually save my files in the standard formats like MP3, WAV, or M4A, but there are so many options—like OGG, OPUS, and AAC—that I’m not sure which one is best.

Also, I usually save my audio files at around 192 kbps—is that a good bitrate?

I’m using a translation tool, so I might be wrong.🙏

How can I batch-delete tags other than specific MP3 tags?

Is there a good way to delete tags other than the ones listed below?

“artist, album, albumartist, comment, discnumber, disctotal, date, genre, title, tracknumber, tracktotal”

For FLAC files, I was able to do this by using `--export-tags-to` in Metaflac, followed by `--remove-all-tags` and `--import-tags-from`.

P.S I used Perl in between, something like this...

perl -ne "if(/^title=/i ...) { print; }"

Music Genre Enforcer

Ive always had the problem with genres when it comes to my library, for me the genre metadata tag is pretty subjective and seeing as its my library it doesn't make sense to outsource this subjectivity to metadata providers like MB, lastfm etc.

Not only that but there are countless ways of defining the exact same genre for instance 'Hip Hop' 'Hiphop', 'Hip-hop' So i really dont want different variants of the same genre spread across my library.

Again, I also like to define my music based on an artists genre instead of per album or worse, per track. I dont want my entire biggie smalls collection to have 100s of genres per track/album like 'Hip hop', 'rap', 'Boom bap' etc etc I just simply want every track by biggie smalls to be 'Hip-hop'.

Quite a while ago now I put together a nice little tui application written in python to manage this, it was very simple but did the job, it basically scanned your library for all artists then you would define a genre per artist, it would then use mugen to update all files metadata stags to the genre that was defined. It stores the artist to genre map to a json file.

I have defined a total of 26 genres and my entire 4tb library fits into one of them, i dont feel the need to add any more than that but have the ability to do so.

Whilst the first itteration of the application worked fine, wasnt great in a server and multiple machine /os setup. What I have doen today is used AI to create a nice front end for it and turn it into a docker application. before you all start, the original code was all written by hand, AI was only purley used for the front end and to dockerize it. its not slop, i meticulously went through anything touched by ai to ensure it works the way it should, youre obviously welcome to not use it on this basis but thought it might be worth sharing incase anyone else shares the same opinions when it comes to genre tags.

here are the repos anyway,

A note of thanks..

I'm poor and definitely don't have the money for subscriptions or purchasing music. Honestly, most of the music I listen to is old stuff I already purchased on 2 or 3 different mediums over the last 50 years. Having it on my phone for work commute is obviously just more convenient. So if any of the people behind Spotiflac happen to read this, I just want to thank you sincerely for this outstanding resource that's been working flawlessly.

Best tool to manage my music library on my NAS?

Hi everyone!

I keep my music on my NAS. It has been years since the last time that I actually used it since I moved to spotify (and now Tidal).

I would still like to organize it better than what I'm doing it now. In particular I'm looking for something that can:

  1. Manage my files. Create folder, move, rename, delete according to the rules. Also edit metadata including album cover
  2. Check if I have duplicates. If I have duplicates delete the lower quality track
  3. Point out the low bitrate tracks

I want to do it from a gui. I'm fine with bot a software running on my windows PC or a selfhosted one that run on my NAS and I can mage from a webui.

Right now I'm using musicbee but I remember that it wasn't optimized for a NAS library

[Open Source] Audio-Tagger: A rule-based bulk metadata editor & Discogs auto-tagger for massive music libraries (Looking for contributors)

If you maintain a massive local music library or prep thousands of tracks for DJing, you know the pain of inconsistent tags, missing artwork, and messy filenames.

I’ve been developing **Audio-Tagger** to solve my own workflow headaches when organizing tens of thousands of tracks. It’s already working for daily tagging, and I’m opening it up to the community for contributors, testers, and feature requests.

🔗 GitHub Repo: https://github.com/ShonShafir/Audio-Tagger

Key Highlights:

Spreadsheet Grid Workflow: Edit tags across hundreds of tracks directly in a fast table view instead of clicking through endless pop-up dialogs.

Smart Column Rules: Set up automated rules where one tag dynamically formats or populates another.

Background Discogs Integration: Fetch metadata and embed album art in the background while you keep working.

Built in Python: Powered by Mutagen under the hood for clean, standards-compliant tag writing.

How to get involved:

Devs (Python / PyQt): I'm looking for contributors to help add more API sources (Beatport, MusicBrainz), build out acoustic fingerprinting/auto-matching, and polish the UI.

Archivists & DJs: Try it out on a test folder and let me know what’s missing from your dream tagging workflow (specific ID3 frames, custom tags, filename patterns, etc.).

Check out the code and drop a star or PR if this is something you'd use:

Ripping a hidden track on Exact Audio Copy

i just started using EAC and i need help ripping a hidden track.

The tracklist is supposed to go track 16, track 17 (3 min of silence), and then track 18 (the hidden song). EAC is combining it all into track 16 and I can’t find any guides on how to fix this.

Software help, file organisation

Hello everybody

Bit of an odd question, not sure where to post it but I'm sure a lot of you all have been confronted to this same situation

I'm looking for a way to organize my (own) songs (still in production, mixing) in playlists, keeping the hard copy file at it's original location on my SSD drive. So basically, I'm going through a bunch of songs that I'm mixing, not sure how to release them (in which order, as EP's, albums, etc.). So I want to play around with the format structure, but keep the original file in place. It would also be necessary that this media library recognizes the files, even when the file has been updated (title stays identical). A plus would be the possibility to extract these playlists to folders with copies of the files. Actually, I think rekordbox can do this but I'd prefer some lighter software. Is there something out there for this kind of organisation? Just thought I'd ask. I'm running macOS

Cheers
