Mod Update Rule Changes (Reminder) (No new updates)

Updates:

  1. I added a read-before-write protocol. If you do not read these, you will most likely be banned within a few posts.
  2. Created formatting guide for each flair type that must be adhered to or your post will be removed - Formatting Guide
  3. Pirated materials are subject to a zero-tolerance policy, as is customary. I've let some YouTube stuff slide by simply removing the comments, but there have been enough of them to make it unacceptable, and pirated streaming sites have always resulted in an instant ban. This is being updated now for clarity, and because the rules have been in place long enough that there is no reason for anyone not to have gone through them after the updates, which I took over months ago. Posting links to pirated materials will result in instant bans going forward.
  4. All posts must have body text, with the only exception being a photo gallery of examples of the cinematography you're looking for or a custom list of movies that are similar to what you are looking to watch next and for which you are making a request for suggestions. (This has always been a rule, but I'm including it here for added visibility.)
  5. We also added a suggestion to upvote posts with which you interact in the comments section. It takes less time than your previous comment, which is the main point of this sub, and it allows it to reach a larger audience. This is not intended to encourage intentional karma farming, which will still be enforced if movie requests are not submitted honestly or in poor quality. If you disagree with a review or a suggestion, there is no reason to vote for it.
  6. Comments are limited to 50 unless you interact with the comment section, in which case you can contact the mod team and request that the post be unlocked.

Low-quality posts and comments:

We recently updated rule 3 (low-quality posts) to make it clearer. This is now one of the five Participation Guidelines listed in the subreddit's main page rules. (Now rules 4–9)

Reasons:

These were updated because a large number of copyrighted materials are being shared on YouTube and other sites, and the sub was starting to resemble a photo gallery rather than something people were actually interacting with, let alone putting any effort into their suggestions and requests.

Mod Update Flair & Post Formatting

Update

Hello, Couch Lovers and Cinemaphiles!

Here's the formatting guide for each flare.

I appreciate your patience while we sort this out and welcome our new members.

  1. Help Me Find Movies/TV Shows
  • Purpose: Requesting specific recommendations.
  • Format:
    • The Hook: Your "Title" must summarize the "vibe" (e.g., "Looking for modern talking-Dino movies").
    • The Context: You must list 2 or 3 similar titles in the body to give a baseline. Provide enough detail for others to work with.
  1. I Am Suggesting…
  • Purpose: Recommending a title without a full critical review.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be Movie Title (Year). If suggesting multiple, list them in the body text.
    • The Why: Include a 1–2 sentence "vibe check" explaining why you're suggesting it. (e.g., "The action is insane. I could not get enough of John Wick's Gun-Fu.").
    • Note: Posts with no reason in the body will be immediately removed.
  1. Movie/TV Show Review Lite
  • Purpose: Providing a detailed, critical critique directly on the sub.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be Review of Movie/TV Show (Year), or you can use Movie/Show Title (Year) vs. Movie/Show Title (Year) for comparisons.
    • The Rating: You must include a rating (typically a 5/5 scale).
    • Anti-Spam: Reviews must be self-contained. Do not post links to external blogs or YouTube channels without prior approval.
  1. Check Out My... (Self-Promo)
  • Purpose: Sharing your own external movie blog, channel, or social media.
  • Requirement: You MUST message the mods for approval before posting.
  • When you can use:
    • The Golden Rule: Approval is mandatory. Unapproved outside links to personal social media or product promotions will get one warning. The second will result in an immediate ban.
    • Etiquette: Even with approval, you must provide a written summary of your content. "Link-dropping" is prohibited.
    • You can write the post free-form.
  1. I can't remember this movie/TV show
  • Purpose: Only use when you need help finding a movie that you can't remember the name of.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be I need help finding this Movie/TV show."
    • You must describe the movie or show with as much detail as possible. Include things like the year, actors or characters you remember, the plot, specific scenes, etc.

Examples:

Below are some post examples included from a previous post that meet, at the very least, the minimum effort we expect you to put into a post. That said, the more effort you put in, like some of these folks, the more interaction you'll typically get, and the faster you can get back to watching movies.

(Keep in mind that some of these are examples from before flairs and the formatting guide were added but still serve as a good basis as to what we are looking for.)

You’re looking for a movie that gives you Halloween vibes but isn’t your run-of-the-mill horror movie? This is the one you want.

It’s not horror. And it’s not Halloween. But it’s got elements of both.

It’s about October.

The October filled with darkened, windy days, yes. Also, the October of our hearts, when we realize the year is going fast. And the October of our souls, when we realize we are never going to be young again. And maybe we aren’t okay with that.

It’s quiet, it’s melancholy, it’s evocative and it’s got a magnificent James Horner score. And, if you’re into that sort of thing, an amazing, weird, frustrating history.

It doesn’t entirely work, please don’t think I’m saying it’s a perfect movie. It isn’t. But you won’t ever forget it.

Hi guys, sometimes I feel I saw every sci-fi movie ever. Please recommend me some. It could international, VHS or TV, old or unpopular opinion about the movie, I don't care. My recommendation is Brother From Another Planet and Born In Flames.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Satires/comedys portraying extremimists? I've already got Islam covered, but want more featuring other beliefs

4 Lions is one of my favorite movies, I love the dark social commentary about taking ideology too far without demonizing the broader group. Is there something similar for the American evangelical "guns and god" faiths? Maybe Mexican folk Christianity or something around Hindus vs Islam vs Sikhs? nothing pure fiction, nothing involving big groups co-ordinating in conflict. I want a farce about a small outgroup against whole societies.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Movie recommendations

Vanakkam! I’m looking for some movie recommendations and I’d really appreciate some lesser-known suggestions.

I’ve been trying to explore more of world cinema rather than just watching the usual popular Hollywood/Netflix recommendations. I’m especially interested in movies that leave an impression, make you think, or have something interesting to say about people, life, relationships, society, etc.

I’m open to movies from any country or language — Japanese, Korean, Iranian, French, German, Spanish, Indian, Scandinavian, Eastern European, whatever. Subtitles are completely fine.

I’ve already watched some well-known films like Taste of Cherry and The Sacrifice, and I’m slowly getting into this kind of cinema. I enjoyed Taste of Cherry, although I felt like it was intentionally incomplete. I also watched The Sacrifice and appreciated it, but I’m realizing that extremely slow, abstract, or heavily poetic movies might not always be my thing.

So I’m looking for a balance: something artistic and different, but still engaging enough that I don’t spend half the movie wondering when something is going to happen.
I’m particularly interested in:
Psychological dramas/thrillers
Character-driven movies
Unreliable reality / mind-bending stories
Existential or philosophical themes
Beautiful cinematography
Movies with strong atmosphere
Crime/thrillers that have more depth than a typical genre movie
Great coming-of-age or relationship stories
Underrated films that deserve more attention
I’m also interested in discovering directors rather than just individual movies, so if there’s a director whose filmography you think I should explore, definitely mention them.
What are some movies you’d recommend to someone trying to genuinely explore world cinema?

Help me find Movies/TV shows Something similar to Life After Life (2022)

I don’t want to specify exactly which elements need to be present in another series or film; I’d just love for someone who has watched Life After Life and found it beautiful (cinematically, emotionally, narratively) to recommend something else that is close to their heart and worth checking out.
One note: doesn't have to be about death. Cause ironically, I feel this series is more about life than death, after all.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Recommend me a movie or show perfect for the Halloween season

Okay so I want a spooky show or movie that’s scary but not over the top. I wouldn’t necessarily call love it if you could recommend me something that isn’t as widely known. Like a small gem you found on Netflix/tubi/disney. Preferably something paranormal. For reference, the most recent show I watched that I enjoyed was the show Dead Boy Detectives. So something along those lines would be good. But anything paranormal is fine.

Films like Green Knight which gives its own spin on Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, 10 things I hate about you being an adaptation of taming the shrew by William Shakespeare, how Kurosawa adapted Shakespeare and all.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Looking for more surrealist sci-fi comedies

Not 100% sure if that description is correct, but I'm essentially looking for things similar to Everything Everywhere All at Once, Sorry To Bother You, Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die, Mickey 17, and so on (with Mickey 17 admittedly not fitting as closely to this as the rest, with it being more of an edge case of what I'm down for)

Help me find Movies/TV shows What's a movie that completely blew your mind?

I'm looking for a movie that will leave me sitting in silence after it ends, trying to process what I just watched.

I love movies with unexpected twists, clever storytelling, and endings that make you rethink everything.

What's one movie that genuinely surprised you? No spoilers, please! I'd love to go in knowing as little as possible. 🍿

Help me find Movies/TV shows heavily stylized movies: help me catch a vibe im chasing

UPDATE: MODS CURRENTLY have this locked and i can’t get it undone. if they do i will respond to your comment!! they said it was because i wasn’t interacting but the only time i wasn’t was when i was Asleep. i would like to keep responding, this is helpful and it’s helping me home in on the vibe! also great recs! thx

ou know when there’s like a whole filter on it? the color grading and color scheme is consistent and creates a world. beautiful to look at. great production design. EDIT: i think the kind of color grading/stylization im talking about is a 21st century thing.

i like psychological things or character studies; yk, stuff that focuses on one person or a small group of people. i’ve seen a lot! would really like some new stuff that fits the vibe :)

-NO Wes Anderson, Baz Luhrman, Sofia Coppola, or Yorgos Lanthimos. please

-no sexual assault of any kind

-EDIT: I’M GOING TO KEEP UPDATING STUFF IN FORGOT HERE SORRY!! not really into erotic romances or serious romances. i don’t like horror comedy either, and i do not like action movies or gangster movies. love mcdonagh though

and i need something with content, not just slow burn the whole time. good pacing. sorry im trying to really pin down the vibe, lmk if none of this makes sense!

movies i love that fit, for reference:

Amélie

Die My Love

Pan’s Labyrinth, Shape of Water, other del Toro

Where the Crawdads Sing

Watcher (2022) the one with Maika Monroe

The Fall (2006)

Bad Times at the El Royale

Midsommar/other Ari Aster

Trainspotting (not looking for something this gritty right now though)

Inherent Vice, which kinda fits

Jojo Rabbit

The King’s Speech

Dust Bunny

Help me find Movies/TV shows Looking for something dreamy and flowing for this Fall

Just rewatched the scene from American Beauty with Dragonettes/Marionettes? - don't remember, when Spacey cascades into the whole rose petals moment, with music slowing down upon him - something similar, but unlike Blade Runner 2049 which is trying hard and ends up a 4-hour long bore.

Something picturesque and dissociating, yet still bound to real life.

Mulholland Drive, Lemony Snickets, Sucker Punch - also come to mind
