Society Did he really deserve 20 longass years bhind bars

Post image

I was only 17 when Nasser Zefzafi was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Back then, I didn't understand the full picture, and honestly, I still have questions. What exactly did he do to deserve two decades behind bars? Was the trial fair? Were the accusations properly proven? And why should someone demanding better healthcare, education, and opportunities face such a sentence? I'm not claiming to know the whole truth, but 20 years is a huge part of someone's life. If justice was served, then there should be clear answers. If it wasn't, then we deserve to know that too.

This narrative, spreading across social media, seems to offer a soothing balm for years of economic discrimination and frustration. But is it really fair to compare Morocco with a country that colonized entire continents for centuries, has a GDP roughly 20 times larger, and has benefited from decades of EU funding and subsidies?

We should absolutely be critical of Morocco’s deeply flawed system. But where do we draw the line between legitimate criticism and convenient populist narratives that ignore historical and economic realities? And can we really demand accountability without being intellectually honest about the context?

Economy Morocco, South Korea and Turkiye were much closer economically in the 1975s. What went wrong for us?

I’ve been looking at historical GDP-per-capita data, and something really struck me: back in the 1960s, Morocco, Turkey and South Korea were all relatively poor countries, with income levels in the same general range.

Today the gap is wild.

If we could go back to 70s and make different economic decisions, which do you think would have made the biggest difference by 2026?

Education My experience with reverse culture shock in Moroccan university

Hi everyone.

First, thank you for providing me support during my ongoing university drama. Luckily it's resolving in my favor, though I will keep the details private for now.

I came back from Europe because my health conditions made living alone dangerous and picked a Moroccan university to conduct a PhD.

I was completely unaware of the cultural differences in research ethics between Moroccan and European universities.

For starters, I was surprised to read that PhD advisors have to be co-authors regardless of their scientific contributions. Many of my classmates back in France/Germany published alone, sometimes without even mentioning their supervisors. In fact, Grothendieck, who is the founding father of the domain I work in, didn't even mention his supervisors in his work. Mine literally dropped all his work thinking I will abide by the university charter and put his name first. While co-authoring a good paper sounds appealing, you have to take full responsibility for its content.

You can't expect that intimidation and yelling will work on a highly critical referee of a good journal as in the case of a regular student. They will instantly reject the paper if they realize you don't know what you are doing.

Secondly, I always expect the senior teacher to be more skilled, and that he will know how to supervise and that his remarks about my work and progress would have a strong basis. I always took what my advisor said seriously. And his criticism about my abilities seriously no matter how ridiculous it sounded.

I never imagined that a PhD holder and actual professor would be clueless about the basics of his own field and make completely ridiculous and baseless remarks, sometimes even scientifically irrelevant and extremely harmful to the project. It was hard for me to digest that someone illiterate in Mathematics is allowed to hold a professor position, let alone supervise students, but in the end, I ceased all collaborations and dismissed ALL his remarks and contribution attempts which i never thought i'll end up doing in my life. I never imagined that someone would be so obsessed with co-authoring that he will go and attempt to learn and contribute in fields in less than a month that make even really good graduate students suffer.

In addition, criticism. The former professors I worked with would be beyond happy to learn new materials or constructive criticism even if it means from their own students. Here apparently disagreeing with your professor is equal to killing his family even if it means it's in a domain you worked in extensively while he just learned yesterday. In fact, there is a whole book called "Errors of Lebesgue" which records errors of the father of modern probability, Lebesgue.

I was also surprised by the professor/student hierarchy. Apparently enforcing it is more important than research itself. Some professors are intelligent and smart by their closed circle standards but by international research norms they are really mediocre. While brillant Moroccan professors exist and i had the honor to discuss with some recently, it's sad to admit that many carry an ego that doesn't match their really mediocre abilities. This is pretty dangerous because it turned unis into safe spaces for some professors' egos rather than research environments. I do remember I had a friendly conversation with big name Mathematicians such as Laurent Fargue/Michael Rappoport who literally shaped the field they work in. Many told me to address them by their first name. Here apparently no matter how hard I try to formally address them they still manage to find disrespect in my tone?

I finished my manuscript independently and seeking private experts' opinions before submitting it, while my supervisor is throwing a tantrum. I deemed my advisor's contributions, which were mostly insults and ableist comments linking my autism to disagreements, plus a bunch of mathematical fallacies, to be so harmful to the project that he isn't even mentioned in acknowledgements. Luckily stuff is resolving in my favor.

Discussion what would you say to your 21-year-old self? No lies, I need that advice !

Post image

Hey everyone,

I'm writing this because I'm really confused about my career and what I should be doing right now. Please treat me like your little brother and give me your honest, possibly harsh, advice.

I'm studying my Master's degree in a pretty broad sector. This includes digital marketing, advertising, social networks, development, etc.

I made the decision to go into the professional world while continuing my studies, both to get the qualification and to find my professional path.

I found a company that offers me a paid internship, and I'm earning about 4000 MAD per month.

After having worked for two months, I spoke to my manager about my future at the company and she told me that once the third month was over, we would talk about the salary, contract, and official hiring.

I've finished my third month and I don't have the courage to have this discussion yet.

It gets more complicated.

I barely have a real mission. Sometimes I'm editing videos, other times I'm doing marketing. The other days, I'm doing development: applications with connections, dashboards, authentications, and the last month was focusing more on the technical side like developping and mainting the exsisten products!

Don't get me wrong, but I'm not exactly a software engineer. I use Claude, Codex, Cursor to create, I know the essentials and how everything connects, but that's it.

This month, I've finally decided to take a step back and see where I want to go.

I want to move towards more technical development and performance marketing. I want to learn to develop, maintain, improve and connect digital tools while being able to understand their economic impact and bring value, I had this idea on my mind that is just passing, a problem create solution, sell, but I know I am just lying to my self, this not the first time it is more like a pattern to run from real work!

But knowing what you want to do and being able to do it are two different things.

I want to go back to the problem that started it all, the situation at home.

The person who has always provided the majority of the financial support for our family has just been through a significant salary decrease, going from approximately $5,000 to almost $1,000.

For me, this changes several things. Not only am I seeking to make a meaningful leap in my professional life, but I also have to provide some financial support to my family and reduce the pressure they're under.

With the distance between my place of work and my home (from casa to rabat), there are several added expenses that I have to consider, on top of my studies and professional training.

Despite all of this, I still feel that I'm not sure of my professional profile or the impact I can make at the company I work for.

A part of me wants to negotiate my salary, sign my contract, and continue my professional growth through on-the-job training.

But another, darker part keeps whispering to me: "You've had some experience, it's time to pack your things, take a break for a few months, learn development, build sites and applications for real people, maybe you can do e-commerce, and then you'll make it."

Guess what?

I've heard this voice before. no once, but it was to delay my studies.

That's why I'm addressing experienced professionals today and asking you for your honest advice. You've been where I am, and it's time to give me a solid answer that will help me move forward for once and for all.

  1. If you were me, would you stay and negotiate or look for other opportunities?

  2. What level of wage do you think I should negotiate?

  3. How do I establish my professional value when I can barely define my field of work?

  4. Is my idea of combining technical development, automation, and performance marketing viable, or am I just diluting myself?

I'm not asking for anyone to save me through a LinkedIn message. I'm 21, studying a challenging course, working, and doing my best to support my family while avoiding getting stuck in a situation like this for the rest of my life. I've been through a lot of stress lately, but I haven't stopped showing up and doing my job.

I'm tired of running around without really knowing what to do with my life and I don't want to waste the next five years of my life like this.

I need the vision, I am jsut jumping from a side to another!

If you've been in this situation, what would you say to your 21-year-old self? No lies, just a realistic piece of advice, please. Thanks to anyone who reads this and takes the time to respond.

Discussion Snuz are consuming me

Post image
25 Upvotes

I’m writing to ask my buddies who use Snuz how you’re holding up? I’d love to hear your experiences because, honestly, I’m so addicted to them, and I’ve found it almost impossible to stop myself from using them. I’m now seriously considering quitting. I don’t smoke or use any other substances.

For those who don’t know what Snuz are, they’re small nicotine pouches you place between your lip and gum, kind of like kala + 5 hhhhh, but more sophisticated. They give you an almost immediate psychological boost, similar to cigarettes but with a much more intense effect. It can feel like smoking 20 cigarettes at once, with an intense emotional rush kicking in within minutes. I wouldn’t recommend trying them out of curiosity.

The main reason I became so addicted is my workload. Some days, I work up to 16 hours mostly between 16h pm till 8am or 7, and some weeks, I don’t even take weekends off. They give me an intense sense of relief, almost like a brain orgasm, which is probably why I’ve become so dependent on them. (Btw I use three to five pouches per day 50mg)
