I did it. I beat Alatreon solo in 3 minutes with sword and shield, no heroics.
Long text below:
When my friends got me into Monster Hunter through World, I wasn't the most dedicated. Going throuch the story was like pulling teeth. Hell, I think it took over a year for me to beat just the main story up to Shara Ishvalda. Back then, I didn't really GET Monster Hunter. There's a lot of things I had to learn like skills, moves, mechanics; most of it was just me floundering through the game, mashing buttons and getting carried like a sack of potatoes by my friends. Strangely enough, I never went on public servers, since I didn't want to get absolutely dogwalked in front of three other guys by whatever monster we're fighting.
One of my first walls was Furious Rajang. I remember somehow managing to time out on him, not realizing I went into the fight with negative thunder resistance so every hit took like 70%+ of my HP. My friends took over two days to just beat him, and they bet I couldn't beat him solo cartless. That's the point where I actively started to learn how to use my weapon and pick the right armor for the occasions, and also learn the fight. It was hard, but I eventually beat him with no carts.
Then came Alatreon, the Blazing Black Dragon.
I cannot tell you just how brutal the ass beating I received was. Alatreon came for me with a vengeance. Let alone Escaton Judgement, I wasn't even surviving him for the first seven minutes when it started. He was sending me back to camp relentlessly. I remember back in April, I just started fighting him and he was carting me relentlessly. In hindsight, sending a guy with unupgraded rarity 11 armor at master rank 58 to solo one of the final title update monsters was not exactly a good idea. But I digress.
It took me over a week of attempts to beat him. I watched so many speedruns and guides on him it's crazy. In fact, I went from not knowing what perfect rush even is to getting Alatreon's timing down for I-frames and counter openings. And I finally beat him with one cart remaining at 27 minutes. I think that was the point when I started to understand why so many people loved the series. It was difficult, but incredibly rewarding.
After that, I thought I was done for good. I kinda did forget about Fatalis, but I was able to finally rest. At that point, I thought I can beat him faster, and I ended up trying a few more times, but gear was a big limit. Then, I remembered public servers and joined them, thinking I might be able to get some help with grinding for better gear. That's when I started playing online more and more, and I started to recognize a few names. They helped me to upgrade my gear, and I cannot thank them enough for it. I liked the sense of community between players, whether they're completely new to the game or veteran MR999 players.
Slowly, I started to learn more about the game too. I beat Arch-Tempered Velkhana and then Fatalis on my own and eventually started joining public quests for them, slowly learning more and more mechanics and intricacies for the endgame fights. After I grew familiar with the fights, I ended up paying the favor forward to newer players. Hell, most of the time I'm on MHWorld, I'm usually helping out other players with quests, investigatons or guiding lands. Before I knew it, I had fallen in love with this game.
And it got me thinking: can I beat Alatreon even faster with fully upgraded gear? I didn't have to get speedrun times, but just fast enough where it feels like I've improved. Then, I thought I could aim for a pre-escaton Alatreon. I didn't think it was possible with my skills then, but I tried, and with every escaton judgement I ate to the face, I slowly noticed more and more opportunities for punishes.
It finally happened: I beat Alatreon just under 5 minutes before he could use escaton judgement. I thought I was done after getting a pre-escaton run at just under 5 minutes, but I ended up fighting him out of habit a few more times. To my surprise, I ended up getting a sub 4 Alatreon. Then I started wondering if I can genuinely break the 3 minute barrier like a few speedrunners were able to do. Just like the lead up to my first Alatreon victor, I started studying Alatreon speedruns, but to much greater detail and reviewed my own runs too. At least, the ones I remembered to record.
It took two more months of grinding, but I was finally able to achieve a sub 3 Alatreon. It may sound silly, but I was just as excited for it compared to my first ever victories against Alatreon and Fatalis.
I think ultimately, Monster Hunter World is an incredible game. It's incredibly challenging and sometimes even unforgiving, but it always gives you ways of overcoming the obstacle. With every victory, you can see yourself improving more and more. The welcoming and patient community were incredible, too. It feels like people genuinely want others to enjoy the spirit of Monster Hunter's gameplay loop and it's always great to see a few names you recognize on the servers.
If there's anything I'd like to say, it's that we ought to have confidence in ourselves. That's how we reach our seemingly impossible dreams. It's like climbing a mountain. We'll inevitably run into countless obstacles and trip up on them. But we can be proud of how far we've come when we look back, and every once in a while, help someone along too so they can see the beautiful view near the summit. Who knows, maybe we'll end up surprising ourselves with what we can accomplish.
Also shoutout to u/KatemisLilith for dropping Alatreon tips and tricks in some of the most obscure threads I ended up coming across. That shit is gas never stop cooking with gs 🔥✍️
