Builds & Maps Had a Homophobic player in the server so I made him a flag in front of his base
I even added the trans one for my friend playing too :3

This will kinda do nothing tbh. I mean if it's made out of wool it would require one flint and steel to destroy your effort

It’s wool but yeah land claims

I think the best thing would be to make the pole with wool then make the flag with concrete. They will set the pole on fire without realizing the actual flag is concrete so when they return they see the flag again.

Jesus christ, the warzone in these comments. This is a very good way of showing support, and honestly probably what I would have done, but it's a pretty bad way of stopping someone from being a bigot. In fact, he'll probably just get angrier.
1.7k
u/Grim712 Jun 30 '26
Bigots are getting way too comfortable and loud, we need to be louder. Support our people openly and loudly. A bigot will always be a bigot whether we approach them with compassion or disgust.
448
u/CantQuiteThink_ Jun 30 '26
That's not true. I know several people who used to be intolerant until they learned to be better and are now proud allies, including my own dad. If I hadn't sat him down and explained how non-binary people work, and instead just called him a bigot, he might never have accepted me when I eventually came out.
And there's the problem. We can't tolerate bigotry, but being rude back to them might stop them from ever changing. So what's the best way to do it?
74
u/ChaoticBiGirl Jun 30 '26
Having someone i respected call me out on my behavior worked on me. Some random stranger on the internet would not have had the same effect, not only that but it signals to other lgbt folks who might be on that server that are much younger that they are not alone and that CAN make a huge difference
385
u/Daan776 Jun 30 '26
Its situational.
Your dad (I assume) respects you enough to actually listen to what you have to say. To truly engage with it.
But some random guy on a minecraft server? He won’t listen. He’ll just scream louder until he can’t hear you anymore and then pat himself on the back for winning an argument with a clearly inferior being.
Kindness is an important tool. And it should be the default option.
But if they won’t listen: then its pointless to try and speak with them. So the target changes to the silent majority. Rising up a flag like this doesn’t majorly disrupt others. But it does force people to acknowledge that there are many of us. That we’re human, and that we won’t just lay down and die.
Then there’s the last resort. Escalating violence. No longer asking for our rights. No longer asking for respect. But instead: demanding it. Its the least pleasant option for all involved, and rarely relevant on a small scale. But its the option that gives power to all the others.

There is no best way, one size fits all solution. I am talking about bigots in general, especially the loudest ones. Of course there will be people capable of compassionate change, but they are the exception, not the norm.
13
u/CantQuiteThink_ Jun 30 '26
I'm not so sure they're even the norm; rather, they're the loudest ones that get the most publicity, and convince the ignorant ones that they're right by virtue of being the ones who came first - we're fighting for change, but most people just don't like change even if it would be better for everyone. They assume that if it doesn't personally affect them, then it'd be easier to just keep everything the way it is.
My opinion is that it needs to be case-by-case. The ones that are deliberately hateful and keep trying to spread that hatred need to be stopped with louder protest methods, but the ones who are just ignorant should be educated.

Meeting fire with fire has about a 0% success rate. Do you want actual change or do you just want to be angry? You’re right that compassion won’t work for everyone, but you’re wrong that it’s not the best way. There is no other way to produce lasting change in someone. Trying to just stomp their beliefs out of existence never works.
68
u/Grim712 Jun 30 '26
You misunderstand, this is not stomping them out, this is standing our ground and showing we aren't going anywhere and won't allow them to keep feeling comfortable being bigots out in the open. We aren't attacking bigots in the streets, we are simply no longer being passive.

Plenty of people these days are being brainwashed onto believing civil discourse can't happen. That's what some people want, though. There are angry people out there who want fighting on both sides.
5
u/WitchyGaymer Jun 30 '26
Changing the minds of bigots is an arduous and slow process, and it's something that is specially hard to accomplish happen when you're complete strangers to them, this is someone in a Minecraft server, unless they have a friend there who can talk to them about this in the real world, it's very unlikely that they'll be willing to engage in any form of meaningful discussion, it's a complicated situation, but I doubt there's anything that OP could've done better tbh.

u/BioDefault Jun 30 '26
Daryl Davis, a black man, has directly converted dozens of KKK members, and ultimately many more.

u/TopFalse1558 Jun 30 '26
I agree. Even outside of this, with opposing views in general. Calmly explaining and letting people choose for themselves is often more convincing. Show them the reasoning behind it. Reducing someone down to one word like "bigot" or "racist" etc instead of seeing the nuance to their life and their experiences, well I don't agree with it.
Sure maybe the words are true of them. I just see pretty much every time that if there's any kind of insult thrown into any kind of discussion, people get defensive and shut themselves off from whatever you're going to say next.
I would just keep the insult to myself unless they're being openly hostile. Anyone coming at anyone with malicious hostility obviously needs to be taken down a peg one way or the other. Sure there are peaceful ways to approach such a situation, but at that point they had it coming as well.

Anyone has the capacity for change, but it's still up to them to decide how much change and why they should change. Fighting hate with more hate just fuels even more hate. Bring peace and understanding, however, and you're showing the other side that they have misunderstood everything.
I feel like my phrasing there was wonky but hopefully the point gets across
8
u/Grim712 Jun 30 '26
The bigots need to be the ones to take that first step. Conpassion doesn't work on those who resist change.

This isn't for the bigot. It's for the people theyre offending to show OP does not support their hateful opinions.
3
u/Daan776 Jun 30 '26
I mean, any resistance to their actions will make them angry.
But its not the homophobics these actions are aimed at. With a few rare exceptions they are to far gone.
The target for such actions are the quiet majority. The people who might nod along, not think about it too deeply, and then slowly get converted to spread the hate further.
Show them that “the gays” are just people. Same as them. That being demonised as such is insane, unethical, and unproductive.
Tyrants rise not because they have support. But because nobody opposes them.

I think a lot of these comments are missing the forest for the trees here. It doesn't matter whether or not this makes the bigot more bigoted, he's already a bigot. An LGBT person being nice to him on a server despite being an outspoken douche will not make him like LGBT people, it'll just make him think OP is "one of the good ones".
True change normally comes from real life interpersonal relationships, not interactions on a Minecraft server. If the bigot's opinion changes, it'll almost certainly be from someone he knows irl changing his mind, not someone on a Minecraft server coddling him.

...I came across this post just now and I'm concerned by the amount of discussions which had to be removed by the moderators (like, dozens of them???) and the amount of debate/(arguements?) going on here. I personally think that putting up pride flags to annoy a homophobic player isn't that bad. I see people's points about that possibly making them more homophobic, but I think at some point we just have to do whatever we want and not care. After being barraged with transphobic messages from my dad for months I sent him a picture of a trans pride flag themed minecraft house I started building out of spite to process my emotions. It made me feel better. I don't think we should have to be perfect people for other people to not hate us. Maybe I'm missing something idk, this is a pretty nuanced subject (please don't hate me)

if they hate you? i say fuck it, theres no hating more, if theyre homophobic theyre a lost cause
17
u/Snoo63 Jun 30 '26
I remember a video that started "Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future." - and sometimes, given the right stuff, homophobes can not just stop being actively homophobic, but end up being make themselves a target if you were attacked so that you could slip away.
16
u/OnetimeRocket13 Jun 30 '26
This isn't true whatsoever, and it's a dangerous worldview that just places those people into an irredeemable category absolutely labeled as "enemy." It ignores that fact that human beings are malleable and capable of change. Plenty of homophobes have changed their ways and are now allies, and plenty of allies have become homophobes.
Source: I was pretty bigoted up through most of highschool. Around junior year, I, for the first time in my life, started to question a lot of what I had been told. It took a few years to fully shed those beliefs for new ones, but I did nonetheless. Now whenever I think back to how I was, I'm disgusted with myself, and when I speak with people I knew back in highschool they were like that and still are, I feel nothing but disappointment.
People can change. Get over your anger and accept that people aren't static caricatures of what they're like in this very moment. We'd make a lot more progress in our society if people would just realize that instead of labeling others as forever lost causes.
3
u/Strong-cognac Jun 30 '26
okay i went overboard with my lost cause statement i admit, but still, if theyre homophobic, youre not gonna get through them in a civil manner most of the times, as much as other previleged people here who dont know what its like want to
13
u/OnetimeRocket13 Jun 30 '26
That's because civil discussions over ideological differences aren't going to immediately change someone, and since these tend to be deeply held values, if you and the other person don't go into the discussion with level heads, emotion is going to flair up and cause the whole thing to burn down.
You can absolutely get through to people with civility in the long term, though. It can take months or years, but it can be done. The issue is mainly in whether that person is in an environment where their behavior is reinforced or not. It's a lot easier to have civil discussions and convince a bigot that their views are harmful if they're not surrounded by other bigots who will immediately reinforce those ideas once you're gone, and it's a lot easier when they aren't in such an environment. This applies to pretty much everything and anything.

19
u/Impressive_Pin8761 Jun 30 '26
eh it's like a path, ridicule either leads to people realizing they're wrong, or they reinforce their bigotry and come back to do much worse acts
5
u/xRocketman52x Jun 30 '26
Yea I find ridicule often makes people dig their heels in. I've had more luck by gentle corrections and being patient with people. That being said, I do think there are some people so in love with their own feelings of hate and rage that I don't think any amount of ridicule or gentleness can convince them to give it up.

If you get ridiclued by the people you hate you’re usually gonna hate them even more. Which is what a LOT of LGBT members do. The homophobe from the post isn’t gonna go ‘Oh, silly me!’ he’ll probably go ‘These damn LGBT members, all of them are the same!!’ just in more vulgar language and reinforce his hatred. What he needs is a close friend telling him these things, or growing towards someone of the community without that knowledge.
