Election Anyone else getting Mayoral campaign texts?

Post image

This feels quite intrusive to me.. I have never received a text asking me to vote ever while I’ve lived in Milton— it strikes me as slightly odd. I wonder how they obtained my number. Are they simply broadcasting this to anyone with a Milton area code?

Zaïna keeps blowing up my phone, I think she’s really into me… sorry girl, I can’t deal with the social pressure of dating an astronaut.

Her entire campaign has been full of slimey and illegal tactics.

She came to my kids high school and took the personal information of a bunch of 12-13 year olds. Names, Phone Numbers, Addresses. Wildly innappropriate.

Several of the other parents are discussing legal action against her or the school board. We're confused why she was even allowed on the property.

Have you not gone to the media about this? If she did violate electoral rules, it should be reported.

Who, specifically? Is there a number to call?

You can call the Town of Milton election 9058755390 or bylaw. Elections committee doesn’t pick up the phone but bylaw does.

If it was an unsanctioned event that targeted minors you should just call the non-emergency line and lodge a complaint. That’s predatory behaviour

Which of these go to the media?

What was the reason she was there? High schoolers can't even vote?!? And what were 12-13 year old middle schoolers doing there?

Receiving a campaign text is the fastest way to ensuring they will never get my vote

That’s my take as well, definitely a turn off.

Either you or someone that knows you signed up your number for the campaign.

There’s no “Milton area code”. Anyone can get any number they want today.

Interesting, that stinks. Definitely did not sign myself up 🫩

With Local Number Portability, yes, you can get a number from basically anywhere, but before LNP was a thing, there were certain prefixes which were assigned to specific areas. For example, there are a LOT of phone numbers in service today in Milton starting with 875 and 878, because those prefixes were originally assigned to Milton.

You can look them up on sites like this:

https://calleratlas.com/lookup?n=905-875

If you have a phone number starting with those digits, there's an extremely good chance that you're right here in Milton...

They are very in with the liberals and probably abuse the voter lists.

Geez, don't shoot the messenger.

I would request the ride just to go and vote for someone else

Yes. This has happened 3 times over the last week, maybe 2 weeks. Super annoying.

She still lives with her parents…there’s no way she thinks this garbage is working 🤣

I got a message from a candidate who I’ve never spoken to. I believe it’s because we were in the same School WhatsApp group.

Candidates seem to be finding creative methods for contacting voters.

I guess that’s clever, but I’m under the impression that many people dislike being called, texted, or approached at their doors for campaigning. Might just be me and a few others though.

If they can’t call, text or door knock. What options of proactive campaigning are left? Door knocking in particular has been going on forever.

I agree though, unless someone has specifically signed up their number for your campaign don’t just take their number off Milton WhatsApp groups. I got a text from another mayoral candidate that I know for a fact I haven’t signed up for any comms from.

Agreed, wouldn’t have an issue if I signed up.

Quit crying and moaning. You can opt out of it.

5

u/Kaladin-- 3d ago

I don’t see anywhere in that text message an option to opt out. Do you?

0

u/Eatw0rksleep 3d ago

If it’s blasted replying STOP will opt you out automatically.

She will never get my vote.

No, but I got 5 calls representing Asif Khan in a span of less than 2 hours. The first four were people, the fifth a robo-call. If I had been thinking of voting for him tonight’s BS would have changed that.

Are they allowed to be driving people to the polls? Why is she directing people to her own website instead of official channels?

12

u/Thanks-4allthefish 4d ago

Heck yes - standard campaign practice to make it as convenient to vote as possible. I recall from my MP/MPP e-day driving duty that 1/2 the people I ended up driving were committed supporters of the other candidate bent on wasting my time that day.

5

u/Weekly-Lie9099 4d ago

I had no idea that was allowed, learned something new. Thanks for answering my question!

I have literally had that job when working for a political campaign. Voting day ground game is extremely important.

Driving somebody to vote is perfectly legal.

3

u/danicubb 4d ago

Good point, I didn’t catch that. Not sure!

Candidates can offer rides to polls - might take her up on that and not vote for her/her dad.

u/taliaforester 2d ago

Very much allowed! And it’s a huge benefit for voters who have mobility issues and senior citizens. Every election there’s usually organizing around getting vans from local seniors home to the polls. Makes sure that the entire community can participate in the electoral process and keeps it accessible :)

Who is the creepiest one? Rdl?

5

u/Shoddy_Sundae_2921 4d ago

Jeez. It's referred to as freebies politics. Common among Pakistani (and Indian) politicians to offer cheap ass freebies for votes e.g. biryani, pizza.. now this Thanksgiving is under a nice ruse but who the ef celebrates thanksgiving with a politician? It's meant to be a family and friends holiday. She's trying too hard.

3

u/Kaladin-- 3d ago

Not everything has to be community coded. For as long as I’ve been politically aware I’ve seen politicians of all ethnicities invite people to bbq’s, picnics etc in exchange for spreading their message and ideally getting votes.

This is a very normal thing

u/MightyHydro88 3d ago

I haven't

1

u/Apprehensive_Cod_679 8h ago

You've never gotten any texts or canvassing when federal provincial elections happen?

1

u/danicubb 8h ago

Never have, no

1

u/Warm_Collection_3993 3d ago

Does the current mayor even know what a text message is?

2

u/CFitNerd 3d ago

Still trying to figure out how to text on a rotary phone.

Report it as spam?

Gosh, reading comments from people saying they’d deliberately sign up for a ride just to not vote for her, when they don’t even need a ride, is….disheartening. You can criticize candidates all you want. If you want to complain, report her, etc., do that. But this election has genuinely brought out the absolute worst in Milton. Like some of you actually exert so much mental energy hating on candidates that you’d go out of your way to take a ride, even when you don’t need it, and when we all know that historically rides have been used for people who are often disenfranchised - youth, senior citizens, low-income families who don’t have vehicles, etc. Report the message if you have concerns and then go cast your ballot.
