Discussion What are your hopes and/or worries with Miami Vice ‘85

Personally, I’m worried that they might just do a retread of the pilot episode, but that being said I really want a remake of the “in the air tonight” scene.

In football terms I get why some were letdown by Austin Butler's casting as Sonny. He's supposed to be a former great WR.

Sonny played at UF. Everyone associates Sonny as a scuffed up & scrappy character. If he was a WR in the modern NFL you'd think a Julian Edleman or Cooper Kupp type. Tough, takes dangerous shots but still gets it done and a winner. Don sold that and you can see the footballer in his identity.

Austin Butler seems like a different kind of WR. More finesse, but capable of big plays. Just not always as consistent. You wonder if he could make the dirty plays. In modern NFL thats a Alec Pierce type. You cant ask Alec Pierce to play like Julian Edleman. Thats a different skillset. However, I think with Kosinski (the right coach) he's going to elevate to a Jordy Nelson.

*lighthearted thread*

Word of advice to Kosinski

This is a still photo from an episode of the series. Note the bright finish on the set details and lighting that creates contrast and moody shadows, aka, "pastel noir." This is an essential component of the show. If you haven't already studied this, consider doing so immediately haha

HELP! Can I watch Brother's Keeper as a standalone movie?

Hey, everyone! It's my first time posting here and this may have been asked before, but I'm having a hard time finding an answer to the question above and I was hoping for a little help.

I've never seen any Miami Vice but have been intrigued by it, especially with the new movie coming out. Unfortunately I have a hard time committing to longer shows, so I've been hesitant about watching any of it. But with the praise I hear for Brother's Keeper and just how long of an episode it is, I began to wonder if I might be able to watch it as a sort of standalone Miami Vice movie and be satisfied. Would this be a viable approach at all? Thank youuu!

Did y'all not see the pilot episode where Tubbs journey starts on a cold NEW YORK CITY night, wearing a trench coat lmao? Yeah, it's light colored and probably silk or cotton, but I think the black leather update perfectly captures the character's dark, big northern city origins. So c'mon everybody. Chill tf out.

I really love this promo. It gives a sense of excitement. This is the promo from when the series (after finale) made its debut on the U.S.A channel. Which also aired the lost episodes from season 5..

I somehow had forgotten about this episode. Seeing Sonny in a black suit at the grave was a bit much for this girl. Tears, lots of tears for Ricco

Darkest moment of Miami Vice through the first dozen episodes IMO

There are lots to choose from. For all the neon color, good guy straight laced demeanor of the cops, Reagan era optimism... in the first few eps we get plenty of violence, murder, drug use etc.

For me, the most disturbing reaction to anything I saw on the screen through the first 12 eps was in Glades, episode 9. The locals/villains kidnap a young girl named Tammy. They show the closet/hovel that Tammy is being kept in, one of her captors throws some food at her. A cheese sandwich and a can of beer that explodes at her feet. He basically drops it on her and leaves the room. This is the same guy that has the stand-off with Crocket later in the ep.

That 5 second shot of her sitting down in this empty room looking dirty and scared when her kidnapper comes in and basically throws food and booze on top of her, was more dark and disturbing then anything I'd seen so far.

I am not claiming it is the darkest moment, and I am sure some folks could argue with me about the bruce willis episode, or the burt young episode with some very creepy sexual stuff. But I was so surprised that they actually showed that Tammy as a hostage and how she was being treated.

Discussion MV '85 Plot Theory

Gonna go out on a limb and suggest not only are they adapting the pilot but may be merging it with plot points of the seond season opener "Prodigal Son". Based on the outfits in some of the promo shots (Butler in a darker suit in those as supposed to the classic look from the set pics) and the fact they are shooting in both Miami and New York. Little of the pilot beyond the pre-credits sequence is set in New York and I can't see why they'd shoot on location in NYC just for that? Far cheaper to dress somewhere else to look like a backstreet and save budget? Makes more sense if there's substantial parts of the film set in New York. I could be way off the mark here, it's just conjecture.

If that proves to be the case, I'm certainly not complaining. Brother's Keeper and Prodigal Son are my favourite episodes of Miami Vice so it would suit me down to the ground. A lot of folks out here complaining over casting etc. etc. Everyone here is undoubtedly a dedicated fan and no one is going to stand a chance of matching up to DJ or PMT, especially if the adaption is set in the 80s as in this case. Nostalgia, personal attachment, resistance to change, it all factors.

What I would say is perhaps keep an open mind? We all know MV is sick, we have done for years, decades if you were around the first time. But ask the general public now, most people who weren't around in the 80s have only heard of it from parodies or mentions from their folks. It's a real chance to share something we love with a wider audience. Crapping on it before it's had a chance is no different than writing off Daniel Craig as James Bond before Casino Royale had come out.

Not saying you have to love it, but give it a chance, yeah?
