Opinión CDMX Recap

My husband, 33m and I, 31f, visited CDMX for 6 days. We stayed in Roma Norte took mostly public transportation and uber. Here was our schedule and review.

Day 1:
Arrive 9:30pm, took uber to hotel. Uber took a while because our driver did not know where to pick us up at. We had to cancel and request another. Took about 30-45 min to get picked up. This was the only bad experience with uber. We arrived to the hotel, hotel century reforma. The hotel was pretty nice. We noticed the floor could have been swept a little better and after housekeeping came it was perfect. Could hear the street traffic in the mornings, but CDMX is known for their traffic. We walked to tacos los juanes, about 7min and had some late night tacos before returning to the hotel to sleep

Day 2
El Zocalo
We went to San Matcha before our day trip to El Zocalo. San matcha was amazing and we practically went every day. The metro card was 15 pesos and 5 pesos to travel. Easy to purchase and train came about every 4 min. About 4 stops to el zocalo where we had arranged our own DIY taco tour.

El flaco, mid tacos de canasta, maybe 6/10. Wouldn't return
Panaderia Ideal was amazing, bread was soft and fresh

Walked around el zocalo, they were setting up an event and we were unable to walk through the plaza. Saw the cathedral and got a limpia. They cracked my back like never before and it was great. We were a bit tired and went to have drinks at the Terraza Catedral and they were delicious. We then stopped at Tacos Especiales for more tacos de canasta. They were insanely good and fresh. Did some shopping on madera st and went to El Torito Tacos for THE BEST suadero and tripa tacos. We decided to end the DIY Taco tour there so we could have dinner.

We returned home to get some rest before heading to dinner at Mi Compa Chava. They had the BEST grilled shrimp, oysters were fresh, tuna tostada was delicious, pulpo tostada was good, but wish it had less stuff on it so the octopus could shine some more. Walked about 6.1 miles

Day 3
Walked to Rosetta to grab the famous Guava roll and Elote bread. Both were amazing. Birria at El Compita, ordered the bowl and a quesadilla. Very good but would ask for broth on the side next time to have more meat in the bowl. Attempted to take a bus to the museo de antropologia, the bus never arrived and we caught an uber. We had to put our backpack and water in the free lockers and paid for entrance ticket on site. Took about 4 hours just for the bottom floor and phone died half way through. Luckily we had a portable charger in our backpack. Attempted to purchase the rings at chapultepec, however, he was closed. Decided to go home to rest before lucha libre.

Had dinner at Bolichera 21, amazing pulpo plate. I am dreaming about how tender it was. Drinks were delicious. Ceviche & lomo saltado was good, causa had too much sauce which resembled thousand island, would pass next time.

Ubered to lucha libre, think, wrestling but in spanish. It is an experience, however, not for me. Attempted to get into Hanky Panky but we were a little tired and did not want to wait an hour. Walked to The Brooklyn Spekeasy and had a good time. Walked home, about 6.1 miles completed

Day 4
Rest day & anniversary.
Walked to La Once Mil, about a 45-1 hour wait at 11:30am. Proceeded a block away to Jenni’s quesadillas for a light appetizer. Ordered the squash blossom quesadilla and it was not for me. Masa and cheese were great, but I did not like the texture of the squash blossom. I should have ordered papa con chorizo. Walked around then went to La once mil. It was good, however, the tuna tostada was a little salty. Wagyu and ribeye were my top tacos. Horchata was very good. Expensive place but good to eat, would return but not on a must return to place.

Went to the hotel to nap and chill for the day. Had dinner at Ryoshi Masaryk in Polanco, a bit high end. The tuna sampler was delicious. Tried a special sandwich which was super small and not the best order. Two rolls, the Ryoshi roll which was mid, and spicy cat? It was the best roll. Pass on dessert, it was not the best. Their drinks were very good. Went to grab more drinks at Limantour Polanco, drinks were good but they required us to order food. We were stuffed and it was 9pm, although we didn't want to order food we got small tuna tostadas. It was good, but it should not be a requirement to order food that late.

Day 5
Mercado de Coyoacán
HIGHLIGHT of our trip. We always shop when we travel, I felt like these were some of the best prices around. We started with a quesadilla and agua de mango y maracuya as a sample. We ate breakfast at Madre Cocina and it took about 45 min to get seated once we put our names down. Perfect time to get some shopping in and look around. The stuffed chilaquiles & torta de chilaquiles were fresh, crispy and delicious. The chocolate frio was perfect to help get us cool. Continued shopping the entire day, mercado de coyoacan was mostly clothes, food, household supplies. Took a break once we were done with the first mercado for some churros and a seat. Walked to the other Mercado de Antojitos where there is more jewelry, piercings, tattoos and clothes. There are plenty of other people selling in between the streets. Once we left we were starving, walked back to the first mercado for food and ubered home.

Day 6
Teotihuacan tour - https://findmemexico.com/teotihuacan-tours/
Picked us up around 7am, we were last to be picked up and last to be dropped off around 4:15
The bus stopped at a gas station for light snacks before arriving. Drive took about 45 min to arrive. Tour was great and well informed. Took us to the sun and moon pyramids and helped take amazing photos. There was then an option to either ride in the car or walk the path of the dead to the last pyramid. We decided to walk and found a few other places to see along the road. Went up to the last pyramid which concluded around 12pm. We drove to a nearby restaurant for lunch, self-paid. It was good and much needed after the tour. It took a little over an hour to get back to CDMX and we were last to get dropped off. Stayed at the hotel for a bit before getting a scheduled tattoo with rojomiocardio on instagram. She was light handed, reasonably priced and a joy to be around. We then had ramen, which my husband liked and I did not. I am picky with pork and it was very porky. Opted to eat pozole instead at La Casa de Tono’s which was delicious. Headed to our reservation for the Handshake Speakeasy. We initially wanted to bail and so glad we did not. The drinks were fantastic, they were USA priced but as a #1 on the worlds top bar’s, it was expected.

Day 7
Heading home. Went to eat at El Torito Tacos for our last taco meal and picked up a torta for the airport. There was a planned protest which luckily our uber driver warned us about the day before. It took about 45-1 hour to get to the airport with streets closed. They took away my wooden molinillo & spatula I purchased from Coyoacan as it was in my carry on, so be warned to put those items in your luggage. The flight was overbooked and they offered the usual amenities to take the next flight. Returned home and already miss CDMX.

Bring walking shoes, rain jacket, portable charger & pack for a city, not a beach. Rained mostly in the evenings, with light showers and cleared up for night time. Lots of police in main areas and streets. You will walk everywhere and probably more than anticipated as ubering takes longer to get to most places.

Cultura/Culture Did you know Día de Muertos has different dates for welcoming souls back in some parts of Mexico

Most people know about November 1st and 2nd but some traditions recognize different days for different souls:

  • October 27: Pets who have passed away
  • October 28: People who died in accidents
  • October 29: Souls who have no one to remember them
  • October 30: Souls who died alone
  • October 31: Children who weren't baptized
  • November 1: Children and young souls (Día de los Angelitos)
  • November 2: Adults (Día de Muertos)

Some families also observe November 3 as a day to say goodbye to the souls.

Ayuda/Help Advice for first time visit to CDMX

Hello,

I am taking my wife for a birthday trip to CDMX next month. It is our first time to CDMX and first real time to Mexico (besides Cancun) so I was hoping to get recommendations from you all about my itinerary and any other recommendations you might have regarding sites to see and places to eat. We are coming for about 4 full days and 4 nights (we have young kids so couldn't extend the trip).

On day one, I planned to head to our hotel after landing in the afternoon and hanging out to acclimate while walking around to explore. We'll be staying in Zocalo the first two nights and I booked us a reservation at Rosetta this night but this can be changed. I should have mentioned my wife is vegetarian (dairy and eggs are ok) while I am not. (Can we take the metro? We are from NYC so are very comfortable with public transit).

On day two, I planned to do a full day of exploring the city including doing a walking tour or two to get better info about the city and all its various parts. We are active travelers so being out and about all day should not be a problem pending the weather being nice.

On day three, I hoped to book a tour to Xochimilco. This was recommended by a friend who has gone to CDMX before. We are not party people (my wife doesn't even drink) but I thought this looked like fun and we would stop at Frida Kahlo as well on the tour. We'd be back early enough to do some exploring after we transferred to our hotel in Polanco and then I was thinking of doing the night bus tour to see the city all lit up.

On day four (my wife's birthday), I hoped to book a hot air balloon tour of Teotihuacan. We'd again get back early enough to do more exploring, then I wanted to do a Lucha Libre tour. We are not into wrestling but my friends all said this is a must do and it looks like a lot of fun.

Any advice you all can offer would be much appreciated. I have not booked anything yet except flights and hotels so there is flexibility to change things. The only thing that is a must is the Teotihuacan tour which my wife will love (though I can change the day depending on weather). Gracias amigos!

Ayuda/Help Moving to Mexico City next year to pursue a creative career... looking for advice!

Hi! I (22M) want to move to Mexico City next year. I studied Visual Communication, and I want to build a career in the creative industries, particularly film, TV, and advertising. I'm interested in directing, editing, producing, and basically anything that could help me get my foot in the door. I know I might have to start by making coffee haha, and I'm totally willing to work my way up.

I'm from northern Mexico, and I'm trying to prepare as much as possible before making the move, both financially and professionally.

I already have a creative project of my own through which I've met a few people from CDMX, including people working in the industry, but so far our relationships have been pretty superficial. I'm not sure how to approach those connections without coming across as someone who's only reaching out to ask for a job. Should I try to build those relationships more naturally before moving, or is networking in the industry usually more straightforward than that?

For those of you who moved to CDMX from another city, what was your experience like when you first arrived? How did you find your first job, make friends, build a network, and get settled? And for anyone working in film, TV, advertising, or other creative fields, how did you get your start?

I'd really appreciate any tips, personal experiences, or things you wish you'd known before moving.

Also, I'm Mexican and from northern Mexico, but I'm writing this post in English because I've noticed English-language posts tend to get more traction lol

Thanks!

I’ve been giving some unsound advice over the last year or so, and I need to atone. The traffic in CDMX is not always bad.

We were here a year ago and got stuck on several Uber rides of well over an hour. A week into this trip I can see clearly that last year’s experience was not the norm. ¡Lo siento, amigos!

Ayuda/Help Recomendaciones de algún salón

Holi 👋

* Haga buenos trabajos de color
* Sea bueno con cortes de cabello
* Tenga precios razonables
* De preferencia tenga Instagram para ver sus trabajos

Hi y'all! I'm (29F) solo traveling and currently staying in Roma Norte. I'd love to find folks to perhaps do the Teotihuacan pyramid / hot balloon tour, lucha libre, or Xochimilco together. Also open to other activities!

Ayuda/Help Visiting Roma Norte Nov 25th - Nov 27th

Hola! Like the title says I'll (37M) be visiting Roma Norte solo from the 25th to the 27th of November. I've been several places in guanajuato state, but this is my first trip to CDMX. I'm looking for suggestions for absolute must places to eat and cool bars to grab a drink. I intend on visiting the anthropology museum and probably the hot air balloon ride at a minimum. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind meeting up with like-minded individuals to share a meal or a drink together. Mi espanol es malo pero estoy aprendiendo. I can barely speak enough to get by, but one of my main focuses for this trip is to use spanish as much as possible. Anyway, thanks in advance!

Cultura/Culture What happened to programming at cineteca nacional?

It seems that for the last year movies languish there for months. 60% of the movies there you can see at Cinemex or Cinepolis. Few older movies/director retrospectives per year, not much on film. A Chinese imported tianguis due to a slight by a subcontracted sub minimum wage worker. A few vacancies in the plaza and most of the stores feel kind of tired

I assume the government is trying to make money off of the building of the two new theaters. Plus don't they have some arrangements with Mubi and Netflix maybe restricting what they can show? What happened?

Ayuda/Help Least convoluted way to get from Puebla Airport to CDMX?

Hola, I’m in a bit of a pickle.

Flying into Puebla but staying in CDMX. My flight gets in bright and early, 6am on a Saturday. I’m staying in Escandón. I will have one carry-on and a small backpack.

There’s no direct way (via public transit) to get up to CDMX from the airport. It seems my options are:

1) Take Uber from Puebla Airport into Huejotzingo and catch the ER bus to Tapo and then take Uber or subway from there to my place.

2) Take ER bus from Puebla Airport to Capu in Puebla and then catch another bus from Capu to Tapo, and then Uber or subway from there.

3) Is it even worth attempting to get an Uber from Puebla Airport directly to CDMX? I imagine no driver wants to make the return trip back.

Any other options? Shuttles? Mainly concerned about feasibility with a carry-on and as a solo female traveler. Muchas gracias❤️
