What was the deal with the Purepecha empire?

So, I found this amazing map of late Postclassic Mesoamerica and I was shocked to find his huge Puerepecha empire just west of the Valley of Mexico.

I had no idea the Purepecha had an empire, let alone one this size. What was going on there? Why is it not better known?

Edit: Original Map made by Juan Miguel, source.

Possible indigenous roots

Hi, I’m looking for some information about how I can possibly verify my indigenous roots and learn about my family history. About ten years ago I took a DNA test to determine my ethnicity within Mexico, so with that being said my DNA test states I’m 80% Mexican mostly from central Mexico, Jalisco and Michoacán. I have a suspicion I may be Purépecha but I’m not sure. I’ve asked my mom, and grandma about it but they don’t really know. Any info and guidance would be appreciate!

reconnecting indigenous mexican

Hello everyone! I'm honestly not quite sure where to go for this. I have been trying to reconnect with my indigenous roots, I recently found out that they trace back to the Guachichil. I have been searching numerous birth records, christenings and marriages and have finally been able to compile multiple documents to be able to reconnect.

Although, now that I have everything compiled I am kind of lost of where to go from here. Does anyone have any advice on what i should do? or is there any Guachichil that are currently connected that can help me? I would appreciate it a lot, I have really been wanting to reconnect and even find my other family members in SLP. Just hoping to find a community that can help me, or find other people part of the Guachichil.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this if you did. 💜
