Film/Television Who actually got better quotes?
256
u/activatedplatypus 1d ago
"I had strings, but now I'm free. There are no strings on me." -Ultron

u/Pandoratastic 1d ago
Does it count as an Ultron quote when it's Ultron quoting someone else?
56
u/Bhavil17 1d ago
Yeah you can. Take a leaf out of Michael Scott's book
"I had strings, but now I'm free. There are no strings on me"
- The person who said it originally
-Ultron

This scene is like photographically burnt into my head, I can watch that little clip in my head 24/7.
We used to say this when one of the boys would clutch a outnumbered victory In ANY shooter circa 2015

u/Vncpls 1d ago
They both have iconic lines and memorable quotes but I do think Ultron has the slightly better delivery. I can't quote it verbatim off the top of my head, but I love the line: "When the Earth begins to settle God throws a rock at it, and believe me, he's winding up."

u/Bologna_Slamwich 16h ago
Maybe because I didnāt like the Ultron movie but thanosā quotes were significantly more memorable to me.

u/CaliforniaBoundX 1d ago
"When a monster has your son, donāt be the ship. Be the goddamn king".
Ultron.

Mcu Ultron is a walking thesaurus. Thanos has more aura( because he beat the avengers).
Now Ultron in what if, is fascinating to me.
Edit: meant Ultron in what if, not Thanos. Zombie Thanos was cool, though.

Ultron definitely has the better quotes but Thanos's quotes are just more iconic lol

What quotes are those?
1
u/Itz_Iced 5h ago
"I had strings, but now I'm free. There are no strings on me..."
"I think you are confusing peace with quiet."
"Stark asked for a savior, and settled for a slave."
This mf was genuinely dropping quotes every scenešš
1
u/arrownoir 4h ago
I meant Thanos.
1
u/Itz_Iced 4h ago
"You should have gone for the head."
The hardest choices require the strongest wills.
The iconic: "You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me."
Or even the simple "I am Inevitable"
57
u/johnnagethebrave 1d ago
Ultron has the witty repartee down.
āYouāre confusing peace with quietā

Wait, when did Ultron quote Agent Smith?
14
u/Choochoo1147 18h ago
Pure quotes, probably Thanos. Ultronās lines are made immeasurably better by having James Spader voicing him, Iād be curious to see if heās still considered as iconic with another actor. Probably not, Spader elevates it.Ā
1
u/WorldRunnr 5h ago
Letās play a What if scenario:
Which voice actor could go toe to toe with this role?
I canāt think of any that match James spader in this one

u/Over-Analyzed 1d ago
So excited for his return in Vision Quest.
9
u/PlatasaurusOG 1d ago
The way they cut away as Vis is blasting him at the end of AoU always had me convinced weād see Ultron again. Glad I was right for once.
3
u/Foloreille 23h ago
The reason we see Ultron in VisionQuest is not because Ultron is not killed by Vision itās because a good part of VisionQuest will be in Vision head
6
u/NeonGenesisShockwave 22h ago
Well that is BECAUSE Vision stored a part of Ultronās original code in his brain so yeah he survived
1
u/Foloreille 18h ago
How do you know itās that and not just Vision imagination ?
2
1
u/PlatasaurusOG 7h ago
My theory is that itās more they come from the same code, and it wouldnāt take a whole lot to send him in either direction.

Ultron. Spader made a scary comic book character terrifying in real life. One of the best written, best voiced villains I can think of. Eloquent, violent, spitting prose. Vader is a contender, but there arenāt many more.
8
u/Particular-Story1697 1d ago
Man, hearing Spader again, even without the robot filter is just awesome
9
4
u/King_Korder 19h ago
Ultron basically only spoke in quotes, and with Spader's voice it was phenomenal.
Thanos had some great ones but his most standout ones are just things like "The hardest decisions require the strongest wills"
But like
"Boom. The end. Start again. The world made clean for the new man. I was meant to be new. I was meant to be beautiful. The world would have looked to the sky and seen hope, seen mercy."
"Gaaah, Captain America, God's righteous man, pretending you can live without a war."
"I think you're confusing peace with quiet."
"You wanna protect the world but you don't want it to change. How is humanity saved if it's not allowed to evolve?"
9
u/Typical_Research_877 22h ago
Ultron, obviously... "God's righteous man, pretending you could live without a war."

Ultron wins by this one quote.
Jokes aside, both are really close, but I give it to Thanos because man, was that man so quotable.
5
u/aRorschachTest 1d ago
I feel like Thanos quotes are more iconic. I donāt know, I never really liked MCU Ultron. Probably because I vividly remember EMH and Next Avengers Ultron which I found far more compelling

I'm just saying his best line isn't even his own line.
2
u/No-Site8330 19h ago edited 19h ago
His first line was a quote. It's not a sign of unoriginality, rather an educated expression of awareness of both self and international culture. It's not like they were trying to hide an attempt of plagiarism, I'm pretty sure they even showed a shot from the Disney movie and played a snippet of the song. They actively wanted to make the reference clear.
EDIT: Fun fact, the line works even better in Italian, since that language uses the same word (fili) for both strings and wires.
2
u/No-Site8330 19h ago
To be fair, the movies that Thanos featured in were way more successful and popular than Age of Ultron. It's easy for a great character in an otherwise mediocre movie to go relatively overlooked and forgotten. Not that I think the narrative around Ultron was great, but he did get some great lines and the acting was amazing.

u/the_amazing_trobbio 1d ago
Iād say Ultron, especially because his motivation makes more sense. Movie Thanos says he wants peace through balance, so wiping out half of all life, but with the infinity stones, there could be so many other methods that would make more sense. In the comics, he kills to impress Death, which i prefer as a motivation. Ultron wants humanity gone and for a good readon. We are a problem to nature.

I wish we could get a story with Thanos in the future without the infinity gauntlet.

Ultron doesn't have as many punchy quotable lines. But personally I think he has better overall lines and is a more interesting villain than Thanos.
MCU did him dirty a bit with the movie they put him in. By that metric, Thanos had the better movie, which is also part of why he's more quotable, but I think Ultron has better dialogue overall.

What If Ultron is the one that actually lives in my head rent free
he aint just dropping villain lines hes doing cosmic philosophy while deleting whole realities
Thanos got the aura and the big wins but What If Ultron had that calm creepy voice making extinction sound like simple math
so for quotes ill take What If Ultron every time even if zombie Thanos was a cool ass visual

u/No-Department1194 19h ago
Ultron. He was much more faithfully written to his comic counterpart (the quotes kinda fall flat with that).

The only Ultron quotes I can remember are really corny ones. Thanos easy win. He was actually a good take on the character. They need a complete redo on Ultron.

Thanos had better quotes by far. Itās stupid they turned Ultron into a meme factory. Thank god Whedon didnāt do Infinity War or Endgame.

Thanos is trying to give you deep wisdom from a genocidal maniac with deep convictions in his beliefs to sway you to his side.
Ultron is using his superior intellect to remind you that no matter how hard you try, you will never be nearly the razor witted catty bitch he is and you will always walk away devastated (or not walk away at all because you're dead).
Ultron wins.

u/highlandviper 22h ago
Thanos got his own movie. Ultron did not. Age of Ultron should have been Thanosā Infinity War.
2
u/ImiqDuh 14h ago
Ultron didn't get his own movie? He's currently the only villain whose name is in the movie's title.
1
u/highlandviper 14h ago
Sure. But what made Infinity War so good was that we followed Thanos throughout essentially. It was HIS movie because he was the protagonist and drove every bit of the narrative. Plenty of screen time. Plenty of time to understand his motivation. We didnāt get that with Ultron. We got āHuh, humans bad, must killā⦠a common AI trope.

Ultron. Thanos is easily the best-written villain in all of the MCU, but Ultron is literally a walking poetry book.
