I got my water bill today and it looks like starting next month there will be a charge now to use any type of auto-pay. Was this announced anywhere previously?

News Election Observation Opportunity!

Post image
11 Upvotes

The Carter Center’s Michigan Election Observation Project (MEOP) is an independent, non-partisan initiative seeking Marquette County citizens from all walks of life to learn about and observe the polls on November 3rd. Originating with observing the elections of democratizing states overseas, The Carter Center brought this initiative to the US in 2020. From red to blue to anything in between, we bolster the spirit of democracy by observing the sanctity of fair, safe, and transparent elections—something anyone can agree on.

Through a small time commitment on November 1st for training in Marquette (compensated $100) and observation of a polling location on Election Day in Marquette County (compensated $200), you can perform a vital act of civic duty. This opportunity is open to 𝑎𝑛𝑦𝑏𝑜𝑑𝑦 interested in Marquette County, and all Election Day observations will occur in Marquette County.

Read the flyer for more information, and sign up using the QR code! Please feel free to DM me with any inquiries!

Question

Hey, random question but figured someone here would know. Does any one know a place that sells plugs for stretched ears in Marquette? This place is so artsy and like every shop is selling handmade things so I was wondering if there's a place where someone is selling plugs. Ty!

Why did mods remove my post about political signs being removed?

I made a post about political signs being removed. This post here is not leaning politically one way or another. I want to know why mods have decided to block my post asking if anyone else was experiencing this. No matter where we lean politically, I think we all agree we should be able to have political signs in our yard without people removing them. No matter what signs you have had in your yard, has anyone else been dealing with people removing their political signs from their yard?

Question What was the siren last night about?

Hello!

My family and I have been coming to Marquette about 2-3 times a year in the last four years. Last night (thursday) the siren was going off after 9:00pm. We called and asked our cousin (who's lived here now for four years) what it was and she had no idea.

It sounded like a tornado siren, but there obviously was no tornado or bad weather.

We read maybe it was to alert volunteer emergency crews but I wanted to come here and check with you all.

Thanks!

Low-frequency hum

My husband just asked me if I've noticed an ongoing low-frequency hum - I have not. I asked how long he's noticed it, and evidently it's been as long as we've been in the house we built in Gwinn last fall. I looked up "ongoing hum", found a number of stories, and read the description of the Taos Hum (I only picked that since we've been to Taos a few times) and "compared with distant machinery or a diesel engine" is EXACTLY how he'd described it before I read that to him.

Is it possible that mining operations - even as distant as Cleveland Cliffs is from Gwinn - could cause this phenomenon? He would prefer not to be a crackpot and would rather have a sane source of the sensation/noise.

ETA update: His doctor frowned a lot and is ordering tests. With luck it's nothing big but at least we'll know.

Local fireplace/chimney inspections?

I've just moved into a house with a wood burning fireplace, and want to get it inspected before using it for the winter. Looking online, most of the companies I see that are advertised as Marquette chimney inspectors are actually downstate or literally don't exist. I think Swick's offers this, but they are possibly my least favorite company to deal with in Marquette and I'd like to avoid them if I can due to their terrible customer service and high prices.

Can anyone recommend a non-Swick's chimney inspector? Even if you haven't used them in the past, just knowing the name of another company or individual who does this would be super helpful.

Thanks!

Local Movie Club

Hi all, I’m thinking about starting a local club for folks in Marquette to go see movies together. Basic idea is to pick movies to go see as a group then grab some food and meet at Blackrocks or Ore Dock to talk about it afterwards.

I’m not a real film nerd or cinema analyzer (not that there’s anything wrong with that!), I just like going to the movies.

If there’s some interest here I think I’ll start another sub-reddit. That way people can make plans outside of ‘official’ club events.

Let me know if this is something I should keep pursuing.

EDIT:

Alright, seems like folks are into it. I’ve started a new subreddit! Looking forward to meeting you nice folks and going to da movies!

In doing a lot of road biking one sees lugnuts scattered about thru the miles. Im sure the assumption is someone stole it but it seems many fall off at some point during a journey. Seen along 41 and 480

Discussion Student Study on Upper Peninsula Local Internet Providers: Looking For Feedback on Local Internet Providers

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

We're students at the University of Illinois and University of Virginia doing a research study on Broadband Equity, and our team is running a study trying to understand more about the broadband and fiber network in the Upper Peninsula. In particular, we want to know more about how many people know about local internet providers like:

- U.P Net/Baraga Telephone Company

- Jamadots/Hiawatha Communications

- Highline/906 Technologies

- Michigan Broadband Services

- Pasty.Net

And other smaller local internet providers that serve the U.P. exclusively, or serve primarily rural areas like the U.P..

What we want to know specifically is their name recognition- whether you know that these local providers exist at all, which provider you may be in the service range of, and if you use these providers. Additionally, we'd like to know the reasons why you may choose these providers over national providers like Spectrum or Verizon/AT&T Fixed Wireless options.

For those interested and currently are residing in the Upper Peninsula, please fill out the survey using the link below:

Link To Form

You can also share your experience with local providers in the comments below.

Thank you so much!

Note: We're not affiliated with any provider or service! We're just students who grew up in the U.P. and want to know about how popular local providers are and why people may choose them over Spectrum.

What do you use?

Scenic hikes and drives

My parents and I are coming up to marquette from southern MN next weekend for the fall colors, we’ve been there before and I have stuff saved but I’m wondering what your favorite scenic hikes, sights, and drives are in the area? My dad gets up earlier than everyone else and likes to do drives through an area local to us that has a lot of wildlife to look at, does anyone know of a place or roads that have more wildlife? Also, favorite food and shops?

So we’re looking for:

  1. Scenic drives, bonus points for wildlife like deer and birds.

  2. Favorite hikes, I know there are a lot of waterfalls and beautiful lake shores but I’m curious what places are your favorites.

  3. Favorite restaurants and local shops.

Thanks!!!!

Kiln dried firewood

I've been getting kiln dried firewood from Stone Hearth Hardwood Firewood in Negaunee. I did a web order and never received a call back. I tried calling them and I get a recording that says they aren't taking orders until Spring. I don't know if that is Spring 2027 or if it's an old recording from last Winter. I tried emailing and messaging through Messenger but I get no reply. Maybe they went out of business? Anyone else in the area deliver kiln dried firewood?
