“I want a wide ranging interview process for a new manager”

“No. Not like that.”

Joe has the same experience as Dan

Espada: Has spent 15 of the last 16 years in a major league dugout, the last 10 as bench coach and manager.

Dan: Spent exactly zero days in the dugout between 2005 and 2024.

How many years was Dan a bench coach?

(It’s zero, zero years).

Good thing they only interviewed him and haven’t hired him yet.

I think this might be the Pilots year.

Still a bit depressing and surreal we were in the ALCS this time last year. Hope it doesn't take another 24 years to go back.

I’m depressed that I never bought a ticket to go

Why couldn’t this be the Mariners in 2001, best record in baseball playing the reigning World Series champs again in the alcs

I don’t think they hire him but it’d be fine.

They don’t need the perfect manager and the upside on the best in baseball is 1, maybe 2 wins a year.

Just can’t hire another manager who pisses away 5, 8, maybe 10 games a year because that manager has no idea what they’re doing, who their players are and their strengths/weaknesses, or how to lead a clubhouse.

Espada would be a massive upgrade on Dan, in those respects.

I think most people's information on the topic ends at "The Astros fired him so we don't want him" without any analysis of the Astros issues, none of which were Espada.

He would be a very middle of the road, low downside low upside kind of guy. I'd be fine with it.

Why is no one telling Ohtani he needed to sit in the regular season to prevent this?

4

u/AnnihilatedTyro ‎ RELEASE THE MOOSEN! 11h ago

Because Ohtani is basically Superman + Lord Emperor of Los Angeles. If he wants to play and insists that he's able to, Dave Roberts, a mere mortal, does not have the authority to overrule him.

This gotta be a huge part on player management too, right?

I mean at least one team that lost the LCS last year used it as fuel to get over the hump this year

Idk if it’s been covered here before, but it’s crazy how much better Brock & Salk are at covering the Seahawks than they are the M’s. This is the only 710 show I regularly listen to it, so that why I cite them.

Sure, a huge part of this is the fact that Brock played in the NFL.

However, the program (especially Salk) hardly questioned the Mariners all season. Coaching, sloppy play, etc. The party line was that they were still in the race, even it when it was clear for the entire season that something was deeply wrong with the team. I felt like I was being gaslit. Other members of the media called angry M’s fans crazy. And of course the Seattle media finally changed their tune in September as if they had been green lit to do so.

With the Seahawks, Seattle media has no hesitation calling out the issues of a defending champion just weeks into a season. Players, coaches, you name it. This is how it should be. And to me, this all highlights how much of a grip the Mariners have over local media in a way that other franchises do not.

Salk essentially ran himself out of town before by not being the happy go lucky guy that the fanbase essentially demands that is the correct way to conduct yourself as a fan.

u/humorous_hyena 1h ago

I don’t know if I follow what you mean here in relation to what I was saying

1

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup 54m ago

I was saying that Salk used to be more critical of the team much like how the media covers the Hawks, It wasn't well received by the fans. Much of the media coverage of the Mariners is the way it is because of the fans not because of ownership grasp on the media.

We had people in this sub complaining about the boos our players were getting at the end of the season and getting positive karma for it while the people saying they were booing were getting negative karma. People love to compliment how friendly our fanbase is with the "just happy to be here" attitude but it's not conducive to wanting the team held accountable.

TLDR: the toxic positivity from the fanbase has changed how the media covers the team

im in houston, and when Joe was hired not a single fan that I work with, young or old, wanted this man to be hired. I dont know if his situational management is any better than Dan's, or who from Houston he would bring with him. this would be a mid hire...which I guess from the Mariners is what I expect.

While watching tonight’s shellacking of the Dodgers by the Brewers, I noticed one key stat about Shohei Ohtani: he hasn’t hit an extra base hit since late August. And it made me smile that Cal Raleigh wasn’t the only slugger who has been struggling this season.

1

u/Fuzzy-Heart 8m ago

That’s kind of a strange and unhealthy thing to be happy about.

so when the WS is TB/CLE vs MIL... what does this sub blame besides payroll.

Leadership

1

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup 3h ago

That damn handshake, am I right?

-3

u/Waf3l Juck Foe $tanton 3h ago

Nah by leadership I mean everything from the top down. While I agree that the handshake was a factor that led to the season, it's the lack of accountability and the firestorm until whenever Cal made that statement. It was needed on or before the ASB
