Its are three parts swipe for the solution I added it on a globe with the lines plotted. So if you wanna guess don't swipe immedeatly or you get spoilered. I am always confused by great-circle distances but really love the princip nehind it and always wish I would think more in a spherical way because I feel like it gives you an even deeper understanding of the globe and shows us that we are all closer to each other than we might think at first hand.

for the past few years i've been working on a project to map stolpersteine across europe.

they're small brass memorial stones placed in sidewalks, usually outside the last freely chosen homes of people persecuted by the nazis.

we started with around 20,000 stones in our database back in 2023, and have since managed to grow that to over 108,000.

it's pretty incredible seeing just how widespread these stones are when you put them all together on a map.

Surface ocean currents as animated particles, each colored by the local sea water temperature (blue ≈ 0 °C, red ≈ 30 °C); brighter trails mean faster water. The view is centered on the South Pole (azimuthal equidistant), where the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the only current that circles the globe unblocked by land, wraps the continent in a band of cold, fast, eddying water. Midway the map morphs into an Equal Earth world view for context, then back.

About 10 days of model data are compressed into 60 seconds.

Each month of a variable is pre-encoded as a short H.264 video: one frame per time step, and each pixel's brightness (luma) stores a value on a global lon/lat grid. Currents pack the eastward (u) and northward (v) components into the top and bottom halves of the frame, with a square-root curve so slow flows keep their precision. A JSON manifest stores the value range, the time steps and a land mask. The browser seeks the video frame by frame with its built-in hardware decoder, turns the pixels back into values, and moves the particles on the GPU over a sphere, so any projection works, including the poles. One month of global daily temperature at 2048×966 is about 1 MB. The archive covers June 2022 to now, in monthly chunks on plain object storage, with no tile server.

Projection morphs: every projection exists twice, as a d3 formula for the coastlines and in GLSL for the particles. A transition blends the two formulas point by point, so the data stays on the coastlines throughout the morph.
