What Are Some of the Worst Film/TV Depictions of Maine?

For me, it’s the movie Reptile (2023) with Benicio Del Toro, and the 4th Season of The Sinner. Both have good plots, however Reptile is supposed to take place in Scarborough, something I found out only after the movie, since it does such a terrible job of portraying Maine (believe the entire thing was filmed in Georgia). And the Sinner. Not actually that bad, some parts did actually feel like Maine but I remember watching it with people, and there’s a flashback to a character running away from her small island town to Portland, and they show her in the middle of a crazy night life in this packed and giant night club with lasers and strobes everywhere and we almost fell off the couch laughing.

Well I for one am SHOCKED the feds got caught delaying MaineCare fraud investigation

and CONCERNED that this could be some kind of political shenanigans.

2-minute report by WMTW-8

https://youtu.be/A5-RP1URqNY

Basically our inspectors think they've found about $2 million in fraud in two cases (and others not in that total) and want to move forward, feds are taking their sweet time deciding whether to take over, locals feel stuck.

Or once again the Republican playbook: kneecap a public service and then cry about how broken it is and should be cut, something, something, rugged individuality, something, minorities.

News Who’s behind ‘The Maine Independent’ newspaper landing in voters’ mailboxes?

Thumbnail

Less than a month before the midterms, a large dark money group is sending copies of a partisan newspaper to thousands of Maine voters who never signed up to receive it.

The Maine Independent is nondescript. Its masthead is plain in black and white. It includes crosswords and recipes among its 12 pages. But the paper has no explanation of who’s behind it, no statements about its mission, and no reason why it wound up on voters’ doorsteps.

Despite its moniker, it is far from an independent local news organization, both in its funding and its politics.

It's basically a 15-20 lb pinewood derby racer, with a few challenges due to the size and shape of the race cars. There were 102 racers up to age 17.

The races are won or lost coming out of the gate. Roll straight, and you can win. Get crosswise and you may not make it to the asphalt. Note the blue pumpkin seemingly popping a wheelie in the last image. That's a bounce caused by the step coming down the end of the ramp. Most DNFs happened here.

There were also artwork categories.

Slugs?

I'm in York County, and lately there are a ton of slugs on my front porch. This is a new thing that hasn't ever really been an issue before. Is there any particular thing that attracts slugs?

Discussion What TV show(s) do the best job of both a Maine accent and accurately portraying the part of Maine they're set it?

A friend wants me to watch Best Medicine (I think that's the name of the show) because they're really into tv shows and movies that accurately portray accents and regional cultures and want to know how good a job I think the show does or doesn't do. I know it isn't filmed in Maine and my expectations aren't high, but if its as bad as I'm expecting I'd like to have some ideas to suggest to my autistic buddy that will fill that niche.

The Jumping Frenchmen of Moosehead Lake

Fascinating article about a Tourette's-like affliction common among French-Canadian lumberjacks in Northern Maine during the 1800s. https://publicdomainreview.org/essay/the-jumping-frenchmen-of-maine

Some great archival photos as well.

News Collins Says Trump 'Did Not Have A Good Plan' For Iran War.

Thumbnail apple.news

Collins, 73, wgo will be 79 if elected, and who 5 separate times allowed the trump administration to continue its illegal war in Iran, is once again concerned about its execution. She had enabled this war, which has raised gas and diesel prices exponentially, yet is, as always, concerned. Not concerned enough about o do something about it, but concerned enough to try and pretend she didn’t allow it to happen…

Anni Clark, singer and songwriter Saturday night in Freeport

A longtime singer and songwriter, Anni Clark is playing at Cadenza in Freeport this Saturday night. It is an early event and inexpensive. Anni has published seven albums over her long career in Maine and is a folk type of artist. I'm just throwing this out because navigating the "older years" is very different than when she was actively performing in the Portland club scene (think Horsefeathers and Amigos). This isn't an advertisement for Anni or Cadenza. My wife and I will be attending the show and hoping other people show up to have a good time. If you have not heard of her go to https://anniclark.com to see if this is of interest. I have often read on here that people are looking for things to do and this might make a good option for someone.

Vote for Troy, or you're voting for Susan

1.0k Upvotes

Upset that Graham was pushed out by his own past actions? Thinking "Screw everyone" because of that? Well, if you don't vote for Troy, you're voting for Susan whether you fill in her oval or not. The ONLY way we can make things better is to elect those who will work to do so.

In many ways Troy is the better candidate anyway. Graham has no experience in government at all, let alone in a legislative body. Troy does. He was a Maine State Legislator, then Maine State Senator and President of the Senate for most of his time there.

Susan is not on our side, she's joined at the hip to MAGA and it's only her PR that makes her appear moderate, taking credit for things she did not do, or at best was only a small part of, and only votes against what her leadership wants when her vote does not matter.

And Graham is OUT. There is no chance he will be elected, so do not waste your vote.

Hunting/new to.

Just curious as to opinions on here.

I’ve never been hunting before (grew up in a vastly different area). Though I’m kind of curious to start giving it a shot. (No pun intended)

Is there groups or something where people learn the basics and such alike? Obviously I don’t really want to go out into the woods with just some singular random with a gun lol.

Ik a few of my coworkers hunt, though that seems/feels pretty awkward to just be like “can I tag along” especially given I don’t even know them super well and I’ve never hunted/don’t know what I’m doing.

It’s not like it’s some dire bucket list need or whatever, I’m sort of just curious and it’s more of a if the right opportunity came up.
