Tom Cruise would be great to tell a joke to because as long as he recognises you're trying to tell a joke his PR programming means he'll always give a hearty laugh no matter lame the joke is.
I could wear him down though.

Pull my finger, Tom.
Actually, you could probably wear him down by spraying him with water.

Look man if someone told me 40 years ago to pray to Temu or whatever the fuck it’s called, and then I married multiple supermodels/actresses while becoming the biggest movie star on the planet, while hanging off the outside of a plane/tallest building in the world - I would believe in Temu too.

Haha I’m just saying it’s wild to think he should believe otherwise. He’s had a religion largely built around his personal preferences, had a ridiculous life - wealth, fame, and all the related trappings, is constantly told his name alone brings in millions of dollars, that he’s the sexiest man alive, that he’s a genius, a remarkable stunt performer, etc etc etc.
Like he’s told he can read people’s minds, and there’s very little evidence that anyone ever really says no to him. So is he really “wrong”?

He did. He coulda lost it or had bodyguards rough em up.
Instead, he just dressed them down for being a bad human and asked why?
Pretty solid. I know peeps have very strong opinions on tom but he makes dope movies And that seems to be his calling.
I can't vouch for him personally as I don't know him, but loads of people that have worked with him that have no skin in the game say he's a great dude. Respects everyone.
Professional, like the gold standard of one in terms of hollywood actors. Focused, friendly and helping. Sends wonderful cakes around Christmas to a select, by the hand of tom chosen, list of people who refer to it as the "Tom cruise cake" that a shop "in the valley" in California makes (I have the shop bookmarked but the name escapes me).
Also like when that buthead English guy had a late night talk show and he kept a good friendship with Tom and even got him to skydive and fly in an fast plane that guy loved tom. Dunno if it was real or just for views but seemed genuine.
He's not great at romantic relationships, from what we all can see. It's prolly his wiring in the sense is he's married to his work.
The whole scientologist thing is what puts a kink in his armor. It's just, odd, and weird I'd you read about the round and the people in scientology. It's abnormal and borderline (or over really) psycho since like the leaders wife is mia and people talk about slavery and captiveness and this slave labor work boat, as well as how they'll make your life hell with lawyers and p.i's and paid stalkers etc if you mess with them.
They always say never meet your heroes. Dunno if tom fits the bill. It's almost like he wants to escape scientology but is to in to get out.
I also feel like someday we will hear that Tom died doing something he loved. In. P-51 mustang crash in the mountains of california(he owns a badass p-51) or a motorcycle accident, or most likely on the set of a movie on a stunt where his age and mortality caught up with him finally as he reached too far and his 65+ year old body finally said "bro, I can't".
He's still a treasure to the industry and movies, and a lot of people like and love him who know him.
A lot who don't hate or dislike him
🤷♂️ He just makes movie to me and they're usually pretty good and exciting.
Wish I could get on that list for a cake.

Yeah, that might genuinely be the best way to handle such a thing. Not letting it drop because squirting someone is and should be unacceptable, but also not taking it too far because it's not something so severe that it should go to police or get physical. It's so good at making the prankster feel bad in a way that most other reactions don't.
Tom Cruise always makes me feel so conflicted because he's really good at being charismatic and seeming genuine about things, yet the whole Scientology thing is just ick. And being such a good actor means I can't really tell if any of the "genuineness" is real.

He is extremely focused and locked in person. He wouldve been a thumpiest bible thumper if he was into Christianity. At least with scientology he can talk about it all he wants but i don't understand anything. He is charismatic belongs to the last class of movie stars. Very few of those are still around..

From everything I've read about his interactions with common people (anecdotes from Redditors themselves also), he seemed to be a genuinely good person. Regardless if it's his training or programming or whatever, he's treated people with respect. And at the end of the day, if I ever get the chance to meet him, and he's nice to me, I'd be nice back.
A lot of people, like influencers, athletes, or politicians, have been going around treating people like shit.
It's nice to see someone treat others like their people.

He's probably used to the difference in culture. An artist I follow, acts differently doing concerts in Japan vs concerts in America. In Japanese concerts, they can pretty much go to the audience floor and stand beside fans cause the fans stay seated and keep their hands to themselves. Wouldn't be the case in America. Not saying there are no crazies in South Korea, where Tom is in the video, but I guess he's used to how his fans there act.

Most people aren't capable of keeping the mask up for weeks/months at a time while working on a film set, usually as #1 on the call sheet.
Not only has no one ever alleged that he's a diva on set or difficult to work with, but every single person who meets him talks about how kind and warm he is (even if it's occasionally a little uncanny valley), from small time actors to actual members of the public.
I don't think it's an act, it's just one part of his public persona. I think behind closed doors and inside his head there's a lot worse going on.
Maybe when he dies we'll hear more about it from Katie/Nicole.
37
u/gildedbluetrout 1d ago
Yeah ultimately i think he’s basically half crazy, but he’s not a bad person. I think he probably works very hard to be a good person, by his own lights. But I’d imagine he’d be quite weird and exhausting to be around.
But then again, I don’t give a shit about any of that, given half the impossible films are all time bangers, and he worked his tits off to make them that good. Hanging off planes ffs. I mean: he is mental.

I've known 3 different people who all worked on the set of Top Gun in wildly different capacities. One was military liaison at the time and was responsible for keeping actors from accidentally entering parts of the ship they weren't allowed to enter, etc, he was basically the tour guide. One was a union projectionist working with all sorts of A/V stuff, and I can't recall what the last guy did offhand.
In any case, all 3 of them talked about how warm and friendly Tom and Val were. Kelly... not so much.
My wife used to work next door to the real bar that was used for the movie, and the owner constantly tells stories about his glory days when Tom and the gang were filming in his restaurant. Again, nothing but good stories.

I think it sucks that his kid isn't in his life but at the same time, it's good to know he's not forcing the cult life on her/didn't fight for custody. I’ve met him twice, years apart, and both were short interactions. The first was when I was an assistant to someone he had a meeting with and the second was just a random encounter when we were in the same building.
He somehow remembered my name the second time and stopped to talk to me. I couldnt believe it, he made me feel like we were old friends. The man must meet dozens of people every day on his slow days, I don’t know how is so good at remembering people he’s barely met before.
Anyway, that’s why I have a hard time not liking him. He’s a very charismatic, personable guy
51
u/SentryCake 1d ago
Everyone always talks about how he remembers their names!! How does he do it?
Meanwhile, I’ll forget someone’s name within the same conversation where they introduced themselves to me.
38
u/Freelove_Freeway 1d ago
Someone asked him about how he keeps up with all those interactions, being known to sign every autograph, take every picture, be the last one there, etc. He said he finds all people important and interesting, that it’s refreshing to talk about them than it is to about himself. Thought that was pretty interesting
14
u/One-Earth9294 1d ago
It's the same thing with Obama; the man remembers every single interaction he's ever had with anyone even if you were just some random caterer who he inadvertently interacted with, and he'll remember every detail of the conversation.
Some rare people just have complete recall and it's a pretty enviable ability, since it's such a huge boon for socializing. No one whose brain works that way has ever been lonely a second in their life.

Its actually very easy, and something that a lot of people in high level management roles (that aren't absolute psychopaths) are encouraged to do.
Its similar to counting cards. The way I was taught, is list out everyone you can think of on paper, and assign them a number based on how impactful they are/how recently you spoke with them.
You only need like 20 of the people you know, memorise them. That will cover most of the common names you'll come across. When you meet someone new, example, Tracy. You'll think of your grandmother Tracy. Tracy was third most impactful person. You now think of this person as 'three'. And when you meet them again, your brain will instantly jump to their number, because you think of the Tracy you have an emotional connection to, which leaves a stronger memory inprint.

Another highly effective tool is associating an image to that persons name.
One example is every Andy/Andrew I ever meet I picture them showing me an imaginary “ANDY” written on the bottom of their shoe like in “Toy Story”.
When you practice this a lot it becomes easier to make unique associations for individuals.
My personal fav was a gentleman by the name of Yusef I met who lived on the Gold Coast in Australia. Yusef spoke about his life on the Gold Coast and the surfy lifestyle in my head his name became “You-surf” with the picture of him riding a wave. I’ll never forget that man’s name as long as I live.

I can appreciate that he’s very loyal to his people. When his agent at CAA tweeted about the indiscriminate siege on Gaza (this was the early, early days), she almost lost her job, was hours away probably from being fired, as several co-workers decided to get together and complain that her tweets made them feel unsafe.
Well Tom Cruise their biggest star showed up at CAA, which is always a big deal because it’s a rare occurrence, had a meeting and made it clear if she goes, I go.
I love him for that. It’s huge when someone does that for you. And as we know he’s not political and I don’t think knows much about it. The sm posts, were extremely benign too, and I’m sure he thought that.

Ok I truly hate to say this, but this is how cults work, you get an extremely charismatic individual and you make him the centerpiece of your “religion” this is how a single individual may be able to influence a group into culty behavior

it's funny how many people fall for this, even when knowing he's in a cult lol

Don't ever, ever forget the first skill of cult figureheads is disarming charm and the second is lovebombing.
This is why there's no "too smart to be tricked by a cult." People like people who seem nice and value them, and you don't know till later if the person was tricking you or sincere.

u/profnachos 1d ago
What's going on with the MAGA cult? There's zero charm or love bombing.

I’m trying to imagine a female celeb choosing an abusive cult over her daughter and receiving the praise that Cruise does, no matter how nice she came across.

I think it’s okay to see the full picture, but yes the full picture includes playing Jesus in a highly exploitative cult and essentially forgetting about his daughter (because his former wife and daughter are wogs/suppressive people)… and also buying cakes for Christmas, doing his own stunts, and not devaluing basic medical care - or at least apologizing for having done so in the past.
Anyway, of course it’s hard to hate him. Sociopathic personalities tend to incite a lot of cognitive dissonance. Basically, we lower the bar for them and feel touched when they act human. And then our hope is re-activated, and it just goes on and on and on.

It seems disingenuous to say he’s just “not in her life” when in reality he abandoned her when her mother left his cult and refused to let her small child be indoctrinated. You can think he’s a nice charismatic guy, but that doesn’t make him a good person.

What a spectrum! Every time i see him being posted, he is being wholesome and then on the other hand I also remember that wacky word salad interview he did for scientology (with the mission impossible theme playing the bg) and the overall unpleasantness around the cult that he belongs to.

This is like the fourth pro-Tom Cruise post I’ve seen this week. There is definitely some movie or work he has getting released soon. Scientologist paying to have these bots clip dump him on social media is just hilarious. Also the bot/shill comments defending him here is even cherry on top.

I was just wondering this myself after reading all the comments. I know he believes in it but I don't think I've ever seen or heard him talk about it or promote it. Only remember the time he opposed psychology and pharma.

That's probably because you're young. He used to be very outspoken on Scientology before his PR team reigned him in. Make not msitake, he is still extremely influencial in the world of Scientology.

Tom Cruise is only 64. It just seems hard to believe, because he's been starring in movies so incredibly long, and he started at such a young age. Somehow based on that it feels like he should be 80 by now.

He does not look 40 dude, he just looks good. Halo effect right here. Even if you got a ton of wrinkles and a sagging face, as long as you're tom cruise handsome people will say you look 20 years younger

Working out and eating healthy is an important part too. If you don’t work out and eat junk food all the time then genetics won’t matter.

As people like to say. Scientology aside, Tom is genuinely a nice guy.
Always happy, always nice with fans. And you can tell that this really made his day.

u/iDontRememberCorn 1d ago
Haha, so cute. Plus cute that he is one of the highest ranking members of a cult that literally has people murdered or disappeared.

Scientology and all, like it or not, Tom Cruise have simply evolved into a great human being. His talent is often underrated, yes, underrated (when people name great actors, Tom Cruise don't come on most people's lists, but his acting is not inferior to any of the greats), work ethic is Michael Jordan-esque, and quite simply, still the one pumping out entertaining movies.

u/Sleevepants 1d ago
He has that Mamba mentality when it comes to acting. He never sleeps on a role and tries even if it wasn’t the best fit for him. I prefer him more outside of his action roles where he really shows his chops by playing weird and totally off characters from what he would regularly look like.

u/MagnetoWasRight24 1d ago
That just makes him a great actor, not a great human being

Probably the most underrated actor ever. Easily the greatest action star of all time. His resume stands up against almost anyone’s. Leo, DDL, Tom Hanks, Denzel… then it starts to get a little blurry. Cruise is up there
