Mod announcement Deleted posts / flairs / rules / moderation

Hi fellow FM1 enthusiasts!

A message from your janitor on duty! This subreddit is exploding with activity ever since MVAVE released their cheap little FM-in-a-box and more so when custom firmwares were released! We are so very happy to see all the hustle and bustle, so keep at it!

Auto-moderation

Reddit’s auto-moderation deletes a LOT of original content, discussions and comments. As human moderators we are entirely aware of that. Only 10% is deleted for the right reasons. We apologize for any inconvenience! Disabling auto-moderation is not really an option as we are humans with human needs like sleep and societal roles like parent, wage slave or self employed worker.

But to comfort you all: the posts are not REALLY deleted, we see them in our “mod approval waiting list”. So if something is auto-deleted by Reddit, report it to the mod team and we will resurrect it. We are a fairly small team of only four active moderators, so it may take 24 hours or so. Rather send us another message if it takes too long, than reposting the content because Reddit’s auto-moderator is easy provoked to go in full deletion mode.

Mod Team

For a month or two, four moderators were enough to deal with the influx of post approvals. But as of late, we are spread out too thin to read all posts and check. So we are contacting the most active members of this subreddit to sound out if they would like to help out keeping this subreddit a safe , productive and fun place.

Firmware repository

Finding and keeping track of all projects across scattered repos and web apps is difficult, so u/aroum2 put together a comprehensive directory and resource hub on GitHub:

Repository link:
https://github.com/aroum/fm1-custom-fw

Check out the full list, web installer links, and documentation in the repository. If you are working on a custom project or know of one that is missing, issues and PRs are very welcome, so shoot u/aroum2 a message!

Flairs

This subreddit is booming with all the new custom firmwares being released including forks of the open source ones. To keep this subreddit navigable we added post flairs:

- FIRMWARE For anything related to old and new firmwares, both official as well as community built, announcements and so on.
- TECH HELP Encountering problems? This is your flair. Both software and hardware problems.
- SHOWCASE Did you make something really cool with your FM1? Show it off! Although we don’t mind any other hardware used as well, showcases without (at least) ONE FM1 included are better suited elsewhere (and will be removed).
- TUTORIALS Did you discover a great video tutorial on the FM1? Did you write on yourself? Share and flair!
- SMK-37 We welcome all FM1’s brothers and sisters that share the same SOC! Not reserved solely for the MVAVE SMK-37 but also for the rebranded synths that share the same OEM synth built by MVAVE.
- PRESETS The FM1 is out of the box compatible with (most) DX7 presets that can be found allover the web. Did you find a great sysex bank and want to share it? Did you program some great sounds you want to share? PRESETS is the flair. Disclaimer: no sharing of “pirated” and “licensed” presets (like Off The Matrix and so on!)

Flairs? We got ‘em! Please use them and keep your local neighbourhood tidy!

FM1 and friends

The MVAVE FM1 shares the same SOC as some other MVAVE synths and their OEM rebranded synths. Therefore they are highly compatible with the FM1 firmware codebase. Beware: this doesn’t mean they are drop-in compatible with custom firmware written for the FM1, modifications need to be made! But we welcome all FM1’s brothers and sisters in this sub. As of 11 October 2026 the following devices are considered sharing the same SOC:

MVAVE SMK-37 (base model)
MVAVE SMK-37 Pro (different colours)
MVAVE SMK-37 Elite (grey-orange colour only, allegedly better quality parts)
Donner Starrykey 37 Play (OEM rebrand, same as Pro but comes with Cubase bundled software)
MKE-P37 (OEM unbranded)

Please do use the SMK-37 flair to keep things organised!

Rules

We maintain the rules to the best of our abilities mentioned in the side bar. We expect our valued members to do the same.

Civil behaviour

Sadly, we also have to include this mention explicitly,
We are not allowing:

- doxing of people, even when using publicly available sources;
- blaming people on behaviour of family members;
- implicit or explicit calls for brigading a person,

in this subreddit.

Thank you for your empathy and consideration. Hi

Megathread: Solving common FM-1 installation issues

Post image
86 Upvotes

Folks have had issues with firmware installation across many different firmwares, with different installation methods (M-UPDATE, mine, others I'm not aware of), and using different types of computers. I'm hoping to try to get to the root of them. This thread is not about my installer, but many folks have used my installer with varying success and I'm making efforts to improve it for everyone to use for whatever firmware they want, so I will mention what I've been up to:

I just posted a new installer. I'm hoping the better communication and problem-solving will help mitigate most of the issues. I'm also doing a number of things differently from a mechanical standpoint that will help:

  • The installer checks that your FM-1 is ready to receive firmware before sending it. Before, it sometimes sent the update while the FM-1 was still on its normal firmware. That's why some installs ended with "checked the new firmware but did not install it."
  • If your FM-1 disappears from the computer after it restarts, the installer keeps looking for it. Every few seconds it checks again the way reloading the page does, so you shouldn't need to reload yourself.
  • If your FM-1 doesn't restart, or vanishes before any firmware is sent, the installer tries once more on its own.
  • If you reload the page partway through, the installer remembers and offers to finish the installation.
  • The installer only suggests switching your FM-1 off and on when no firmware was sent.

Also, I can now compare how often installs finish with the new installer and with the old one, which should help. More data!

If you have an issue or think you soft-locked your device and need help, please talk about it here! What firmware, what firmware and version did you overwrite, what kind of computer, what browser, previous failures, any failures with M-UPDATE, any failures with the Baud Girl installer, etc.

BTW: I think we should also have a separate megathread specifically for community solutions for a bootloader tool. Lots of folks have been building them, you can buy the real JieLi Force Updater but it's expensive for what it is, and I made one with an ESP32-S3 but it needs some resistors and isn't easy for non technical people. Ideally we get 99%+ of the issues solved through better firmware installers, and those that truly soft-locked their device can have an easier way to get back to firmware soon.

FM-1 Keys are pressure sensitive!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

That white bar is showing the detected pressure of the key changing and then using that to drive aftertouch on the CS-1 a Yamaha CS-80 style synth https://twochannels.github.io/CS-1/

Credit to Charles Vestal (Velo project (fm1-velocity) found the technique and wrote the sensing code CS-1 uses. The idea is to read the resistance of the carbon pill under each key through the chip's ADC, with the row driven high. Velo also measured the settings. His MONK-1 firmware (fm1-monk) contributed the fix that counts pressure from where the key rests rather than where it landed, and the test CS-1 runs.

Firmware Melodee 1.4 now available

Hey all, it is your "Most underrated" firmware developer! (Not my words.)

So uh this took a while but promise you it is worth it. I'll make a stream again going through the changes later, baby has my attention and I only have 1 available hand at this point. Here's the changelog!

  • Redesigned interface: larger text throughout, a choice of Rubik or Melodee Pixel fonts, clearer menus and dialogs, coloured track rows, new palettes, and dots showing the whole pattern. Things to try: Press HOME at HOME.

  • FX rack views: easier navigation between track inserts and shared effects, with chain/split routing accessible from the rack. ECHO, ROOM and REVERB gain a TONE control running from DARK through FULL to THIN (Hi pass - low pass), with less bass buildup in repeats and tails.

  • C64 SID modes and drum kits: SID now has C64 6581/8580 modes, including fast arpeggios from held chords. SID KIT and SID DIGI add chip-style drums, with synthesized kick and snare played through the emulated four-bit volume register in DIGI mode. Retriggers and voice stealing are improved too. Things to try: Set SID engine to one of the C64 modes and play a chord. Suddenly 80's vibes.

  • Better recording and pattern performance: explicit REC keeps recording across loops, while pattern shortcuts offer a single pass. Whole-take undo/redo restores notes, motion and timing together. Destructive pattern operations wait for the loop end, and SEQ’s black keys select tracks. Things to try: Hold SEQ, press an empty pattern in the notes. Empty patterns arm for recording for the duration of the pattern.

  • One to four tracks per song: start small and add tracks as needed. Tap HOME for the chord wheel, showing sounding notes, chords and the waveform. Assign SELECT on Stage, or GLO+SELECT across pages, to your preferred performance control. If you put 1 track you can use it as a synth only!

  • One shared preset bank: U001–U384 can hold any mix of Prophet, FM6, CZ-1, SID and Drum sounds. Native voice data stays with each preset, and supported older banks migrate automatically.

  • Simpler USB audio: one duplex device named Melodee replaces the separate playback and recording devices. Computer volume and mute affect playback without changing recordings. Stereo master and four isolated mono track stems remain available.

  • Online manual: an illustrated guide covering the instruments, effects, recording, editor, installation and recovery. Thanks to relyt29 for writing it!

Smaller improvements include remembered pages in the EDIT map, more reliable knob navigation, clearer modulation destination names, corrected SysEx import routing, audio optimizations, more RAM available for audio, and a saved shared voice budget.

Current builds use both CPU cores. Stability issues are for the most part a thing of the past. Back up projects and presets before upgrading, and keep power connected during migration. Older firmware cannot read the new shared preset bank.

Friday's FM-1 firmware roundup

• Upvotes

Here's today's updates (so far!) - https://fm1-editor.com/firmware/

New:

  • Fantasma (Gadlele), ambient firmware forked from Felucca: a chord-writing Pad, self-playing bells, a noise engine of sea, rain and vinyl, and an Omnichord on the keys.
  • FOMAJAM (konsumer), a nine-track groovebox. Each track plays its own machine: classic drum machines, your own samples, Felucca’s synth engines, or MIDI out.
  • GammaWave (fvalente), Felucca-based, with a wavetable sound, a live spectrogram filter, a four-track tape deck and a 49-genre song generator.
  • MC-1 (dspaudio), a four-part groovebox with 128 melodic presets and eight drum kits. v1.0.0 now has an installer, so it’s out of the “watching” section.
  • Melodee (Tess) (Rastapopolix), a Melodee fork with Turing, Euclid, Markov and Morph note generators. It’s marked experimental.
  • MIN-1 (Reytian), a self-playing minimalist ensemble in the manner of Philip Glass, which you can take over.

Updated:

  • OberVave: 1.2.1 → 1.3.1 (sequencer coloured by track)
  • Groove OS: 1.3.1 → 1.4 (your own drum sounds)
  • X0X: 1.0.9 → 1.1.0
  • Melodee: 1.3.6 → 1.4.1
  • SLOOP: 2.6 → 2.7
  • ChoralRoot: 0.21 → 0.23 (beta)
  • MAKU: 0.1 → 1.0
  • Skiff: 1.1 → 1.2
  • AMB-1: 1.1 → 1.2
  • CTL-1: 0.9 → 0.9.2
  • FoMni: 0.3.2 → 0.4
  • Mocky: 0.9 → 0.9.1
  • MONK-1: 0.9 → 0.9.1
  • Polly: 0.4.2 → 0.4.3
  • Araminta: 2.2 → 2.3
  • ORBIT: 0.7.0 → 0.7.1
  • DUELL: 0.2.13 → 0.2.20 (beta)
  • Bubba Machine: 0.6.1 → 0.7.0 (beta)
  • FM-106: beta4 → beta5

On the watch list (not installable yet)

  • DriftSeq: web emulator only.
  • fm1-zed: no release.
  • Patricktronics: no release.
  • REGGAE-OS: hardware untested.
  • SIDOU: emulator only.
  • FM1 Move: community testers have run earlier builds, but there’s been no structured hardware test.

Firmware Best firmware for someone who plays organs, cheap Casios, likes analog sounds? Also decay issue

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi all, I confess I’m not a big fm guy but i got this lil thing because I’m intrigued by the firmware options. I play an old lowrey organ in a band, generally love the sounds of transistor organs, analog synths, the Yamaha ps20, and yr classic cheap 80s Casio.

I’m leaning towards Duell because I like the idea of layering two patches. Do any of the other firmwares do this?

Any firmware recs based on what I like to play?

Also, I’m noticing the stock firmware doesn’t allow decay unless I hold a key down. Do any of the alternatives allow notes to ring without being held?

Thanks, excited to dive in

Tech help bigger knobs options?

Post image
6 Upvotes

My M-Vave FM1 is on it's way, but I know I'll want to put on some caps on the knobs.

Anyone else get ones that fit?

The pic shows 2 brown knobs that fit perfect on my Korg NTS-1 MkII.
The bigger/wider knobs make all the difference.

I have knobs that I put on my Korg Volcas, Teenage Engineering Pocket Operators and some other tiny synths.

the specs on the ones I've used are all:
Davies 1900h knobs
they fit 6.4mm (0.25") shaft size

they have tiny screws on the side to tighten them up

Let me know what anyone is using on their M-Vave FM1
Thanks!

Firmware Is sloop the best groove box firmware?

i have this question, i´m waiting for my FM1 to get home and I saw a lot of great firmwares but I don´t know which one is the best groove box one, I got experience using iPadOS apps like korg gadget or Ableton note, so I would like something similar

Firmware Some open source utilities

Hey there… FM-1ers?

Anyone interested in an open source Swift “kit” to use as an underlying library when building iOS or macOS apps that talk to the FM-1?

https://github.com/ocean/FM1Kit - fully usable but not fully released yet, still a WIP, should be out by the end of the weekend.

Also, I’m building a utility app for iPhone (with this) which allows you to save firmwares to your phone inside the app - it searches across multiple “indexes” to find currently about 40 firmwares, then you can download them to your phone so you can “hot swap” a firmware via USB, say if you were at a cafe or even at a gig maybe.

Some WIP screenshots coming soon

Firmware DUELL 0.2.20 beta: web editor, TAPE and VINYL inserts, PLATE reverb

Thumbnail

New in this beta:

- **Web editor with a librarian and a piano roll.** Export, import and drag patches between the 128 slots, import DX7 .syx banks as FM6 patches, back up and restore, draw step patterns on a piano roll, and send your own wavetables. Chrome or Edge, over USB.

- **128 patch slots.** Hold SAVE to save over any slot, RESTORE brings the factory sound back.

- **TAPE and VINYL inserts.** Tape wow, flutter and saturation; vinyl dust, noise and warp.

- **PLATE reverb,** a smooth stereo plate, with a low cut on the reverb input so the bass stays clear. The SHIM reverb can now shimmer down or both ways, with a slow drift.

- **Advanced Delay modes:** DIGI, PING, RAND and OCT+.

- **BASS MONO:** the output goes mono below a frequency you choose.

Try here: https://oscillr.github.io/DUELL/emu/

Install: https://oscillr.github.io/DUELL/install/

Beta, flash at your own risk.

Is there a genuinely portable groovebox that beats the FM-1 with custom firmwares?

I’ve fallen in love with the M-VAVE FM-1 running custom groovebox firmwares. It’s tiny enough to take anywhere, even to bed. Yet I can build surprisingly complete grooves with its synth engines. For a hobby instrument that I actually pick up and use, its value is incredible.

I keep looking at much more expensive gear, but I can’t find a clear upgrade for how I use it. What I want is a battery powered, lap friendly standalone groovebox with good synth engines, drums, a screen that visibly shows the step sequencer/piano roll, and enough arrangement capability to develop ideas into complete songs. An internal speaker isn’t necessary.

Am I overlooking something? Has anyone found a genuinely portable groovebox that feels like a meaningful upgrade from the FM-1 without sacrificing its pick up and play freedom?

Hard bricked

• Upvotes

Okay so, I did it, hard bricked it just before sloop 2.7 came out. I'm upset. I'm thinking there is only one way to fix this and it's using a dolphin flipper or a rp2040? I think I'm in way over my head. Don't suppose anyone in Bristol, UK has the ability to help? I'm off work from surgery so unfortunately as cheap as thwy are buying a new one isn't an option currently.

Firmware Testers for custom bootloader needed

Hi, I am making a custom bootloader for fm-1 and smk-37. This bootloader will let you recover if you accidentally brick your device without the need of any additional hardware (just your computer). In addition I made a flasher which lets you easily backup and restore the full 1MB of memory on your device (windows/mac/linux). This WILL NOT work if you have already bricked your device. I have smk-37 myself and did testing on the device, but I am looking for somebody who has fm-1 and already has the hardware to unbrick the device just in case. If you are that person please DM me.

Firmware Baud girl 101 Hammond fm organ

Sort if this has been mentioned elsewhere but anyone having issues with Hammond organs on baudgirl 101? Might be the 6 straight operators algorithm but these presets worked on the previous firmware. Just wondered if it’s on the radar. Get distortion on patches that worked well previously and still work in dexed.
