Hi there. I am a transgender student considering MTU for my PhD. I currently am a student at a university in South Carolina and am very unhappy with how my state is going. I know I won't be able to stay here forever. I got a really good response from a professor at MTU and am seriously considering attending. And I had a few questions.
How accepting is MTU of trans people, the faculty/staff but also the other students?
Is there a strong transgender or LGBTQ club/organization on campus to meet others and find community?
What does the surrounding community think about LGBTQ folks? Such as restaurants and stores.
Is the engineering department accepting of LGBTQ people? If anyone has specific info on the Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering department that would also be appreciated if anyone is aware.
I also have a disability and was wondering about what the disabled experience of students is like.
Is there a way to get testing accommodations and accommodations for assignment extensions and excused absences due to my disability making it difficult to attend classes or get assignments done?
Is the campus physically accessible? Ramps, elevators, automatic doors, ADA parking, that sorta thing.
Similar to what I asked earlier: how are disabled folk treated by students, faculty, and surrounding communities?
I wanted to hear about people's experiences, especially other trans students and alumni, and disabled folk, but any information from anyone regardless of identity would be appreciated!
Thanks!
