[UNSOLVED] Help with Error

Does anyone know what this error is or how to work around it? I am in a highly locked down database that was purchased from Harris for government financial statements many moons ago. They are no longer supporting the product. My IT group restored an old version and have checked that trust settings are correct. I am desparate.

One possibility has to do with bitness of the database and bitness of your currently installed Access.

This is an older version of the database. It was probably created as a 32 bit application. If your organization is now running 64 bit Office, and therefore 64 bit Access, certain features, primarily Windows APIs will fail and this error is typical of that kind of failure.

It's more complicated, though, if that is the case. I assume that you have an accdE, not an accdB file. And that means you are at a dead end unless you get your IT to install and test the 32 bit version of Access to see if this is actually the problem. AccdE files must be compiled in the same version they will be used with. Since the vendor is not longer supporting it, that route isn't open to you. Figure that out as the first step.

they downgraded me to 34 just to support this database

There's not much you can do with an accde file and you can't convert it back to accdb. It's basically "compiled". Have you verified that the file in the error code exists in that path?

That is the way the accdE works. If the runtime error is not resolved by running this database in 32 bit Access, you're done. I'm sorry to put it so bluntly, but from what we know so far, there's no path forward here.

The vendor no longer supports this application. They own the code base. You can't change it in the format you have, i.e. the compiled accde. The only options I can see are replacing it with another application which does the same things or hiring someone to replicate the functionality of this one.

I did a quick Google search and turned up at least one vendor marketing directly to "former" CAFR users looking for a replacement. It certainly looks like that might be your next move.

I doubt you're going to be able to troubleshoot it given that it is a very locked down database. Are you sure that you're even using a full version of access (vs. a runtime version)? There's nothing you can do in a runtime.

That error wouldn’t happen in runtime, it’d just quit.

Wouldnt you get the error but no debug button?

No, unhandled errors such as this just force Access Runtime to crash with an generic error and quit

there is nothing suggesting this is run time

Open MS Access using the /decompile switch and hold the shift key while the db opens. Then compact and repair.

Quick Google tells me CAFR Unlimited was an Access app that seems to have stopped being developed and supported nearly 10 years ago, and many organisations moved onto web based solutions. The error suggests there’s a compile error on the click event. The M:\xxxx\ suggestions a network folder, and the cafr.aux indicates a custom extension. Are you able to open that file in MS Access?

Yes i was able to open it, I am getting what looks like to a design view

Do you see objects? Do you know the form that’s crashing? One of the buttons on a form will be causing the error. If you can, open the form up in design view, right click the button and try to view the OnClick event procedure

i can see objects and i do know which form it is, but everything seems to be locked down. i cannot see a design view
