Training Question Got lit up. Need advice

• Upvotes

Some background I boxed In high school for about a year. I’m currently early 20s. Just started training BJJ and Mma a couple months ago.

There is a old pro at the gym and a couple of weeks back it was the end of class and we were sparring, everybody stayed to spar and I haven’t ever sparred yet in this class so I was like fuck it I’m staying.

First guy I went against was an experienced guy and I told what’s up man I’m gonna be going like 70%. Just really trying to work on defense and combos and any advice would be great. He said no problem. Round went great. Next guy I said the same thing. Round went great. Wasn’t many of us in the class so I went up to the guy who was a pro and said “what’s up man can I get a round?” He said sure. Tap gloves and I start throwing punch kicks combos. 60%-70% power. He doesn’t do anything for the first minute. Just letting me swing. And I’m kinda confused then. He then throws a hard jab and teep and nearly knocked me over. So my thought process was ok. He wants me to match that pace. No problem I will try my best. Then I get hit with like 10 leg kicks in a row that felt like he was doing it as hard as he could. Followed up by a bunch of punch kick combos with full intensity. So obviously me trying to match that. I guess I may have hit him and he told me he was gonna put me down if I throw another punch like that again. Which really confused me cause I felt like I was fighting for my life. The round got pretty intense and the entire gym stopped and was watching. I have no problem taking hits but it felt very excessive in result had a black eye and pretty much got my shit handed to me.

I didn’t want that at all. I’m trying to learn and I’ve never watched this guy spar like that either anyone else. What do I do? Idk if I did something to piss him off before hand. Is it worth going up to him and asking if there’s anything I need to work on that he noticed?

Training Question does anyone take notes during/after training?

this might be a weird and unconventional question to some but its a genuine question. it's just something i'm really curious about and maybe make it into a habit if it genuinely does help.

if you guys do take notes, when do you do it? and how?

Training Question How is learning freestyle wrestling / Greco compared to learning wrestling in MMA classes?

I’ve done a couple classes of wrestling but it’s an “all levels” gym. And it can be a bit fast. At least for me. They don’t have a fundamentals or beginner class but MMA does. I was wondering if anyone had experience with both. Is it easier to learn the basics and maybe go back to wrestling after some time there? I’m in my 30s. Looking to be the best all around fighter I can be. Not really like competing in wrestling tournaments. But I understand the usefulness.

Do MMA classes teach you enough of stuff like Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, and bjj so that you don’t necessarily need the individual classes?

Which Gym?

I've been training for about 5 months at an MMA gym. Mostly wrestling, MMA and no gi jiu jitsu, and boxing on and off. My goal is self defense and maybe 1 jiu jitsu tournament just to say I did it.

The gym is about 30 minutes away without traffic and an hour during rush hour. It's also a bit expensive, $250 for unlimited and a little cheaper for less frequent options.

While I've been training my son wanted to go too, so we took him to a jiu jitsu gym closer to the house and he loves it. I've dropped in there a few times because of the distance and since he's there anyway. It's overall a solid gym, a bit smaller, no fundamentals class and mostly higher level guys with a blue belt or two and some 3-4 stripe whites.

I love my MMA gym and I'm kind of attached to it since it was my first gym. They also have a ton of great classes like all levels wrestling, which I probably can't replace in my area. The biggest thing is I wouldn't be able to get striking if I switched.

The reason I'm considering switching is it's the gym my kid goes to, it's right by the house, and they'd bundle us both for $250. I just don't know if I'd be comfortable at a purely grappling place. I need the striking and I'd miss wrestling and the people there.

Anyone been in a similar situation? What would you do?

Competition Question Mma footwork

No neo footwork anymore?

Is it beneficial? Why there's less people than before applying it?

Strickland, petr yan, very minimalist approaches are on top now?
