MODPOST: Sub Rules Updates / Clarifications

I've had a few questions the last couple of days about Post/Comment removals so, in the interest of transparency, I'm posting for the whole sub:

  1. Buying / Selling / Trading / Etc - Firearms or Parts: The short answer is "You can't - this is a reddit site-wide rule, not limited to this Sub". Reddit’s policy on prohibited transactions bans buying, selling, gifting, or encouraging transactions with other users, explicitly or implicitly, firearms AND firearms parts and enhancements. Its list of examples names both "clips" and magazines among other things. https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043513471-Illegal-or-Prohibited-Transactions This is something we can't let go, don't have leeway with, and will be as restrictive as needed. It's one of the few things that could get a ban from the Mods here.
  2. Politics - when do I remove posts/comments? I've posted about this a few times, but maybe the chain of thinking I go through will add some additional clarity (or not?) for when things seem like they're in gray areas: A) Is the content about the practical application of existing law in Maine? If yes, good! B) Is the content about concrete/tangible/actual potential changes to the law in Maine *and* its practical application? e.g. "This actual law is going into effect and will do X, be aware of the changes." - good to go. C) Is the content about concrete/tangible/actual potential changes to the law in Maine and it is providing actionable information on how to take action on it - WITHOUT expressing a preference for which actions to take or encouraging a specific political position - good to go! Other subtle guidelines: Is the content more about "rights" than "laws"? Probably out bounds here. Edit: Regarding "Second Amendment" - Folks can be referencing it either as a legal construct (eg "Maine is 2A friendly...legally") or on a "rights" basis (eg "Maine is 2A friendly because we believe in rights!"...or whatever)....the former is in bounds, the latter out of bounds. Is the content intended to or can it reasonably be construed to be taking a party position on guns or attacking another party position on guns? Absolutely out of bounds. Speculative comments on the overall "direction" of Maine's legal or political environment? Almost certainly out of bounds. Anything otherwise *explicitly* about politics or the politics of guns? Out of Bounds.
  3. Overall Mod Ethos on how out of bounds content is handled: A) Tone - Don't be a dick, don't harass other people, keep it civil and polite and welcoming. This is one area where I'll ban freely - there is no reason for the rest of us to have to put up with nonsense. (Note: That said, this has only happened 2-3 times in 3 years). B) Political - Mainly, offending comments or posts will be removed. You're more than welcome to repost content with different wording if the political content wasn't central to the post/comment. No big deal. C) Buying/Selling (and breaking other reddit rules) - this may result in a ban, depending on how serious. It's the kind of thing that could get the sub interfered with or shut down. I try not to, but will. D) Advocating for breaking the law (above and beyond any specific obligations Reddit has) - I kind of file this under Tone and, depending on the context, I might construe it as "You're being a dick". Your risk tolerance is yours and I'm not, as a mod (or as an individual), going to suggest no one has or should/shouldnt ever break the law, but advocating for it here creates a negative atmosphere.

Anyway, hope that's clear(er?). Carry on. Thanks for being here.

It's a beautiful day to hit the range

Forgot targets, all but a box of ammo and my ear pro (had some foam plugs luckily) but still a great day to send some rounds down range. Hoping to find a spot to stretch this out further than 100y soon.

Excited to be moving to one of my Favorite states, bringing NFA items question

I‘m coming from VA, I’ve got several SBRs and suppressors. I already knew and targeted Maine as a 2a friendly place to move. But since I just got a job offer I need to start getting things ready. I haven't found anything concerning, but wanted to ask locals if I’m missing anything. I think I just need to Form 5320.20 the SBRs and I‘m good to go.

Cabelas blows, Chase is alright

Every time I go to Cabelas in Scarborough, I tell myself it’s the last time. Then a few years later something is surprisingly cheap and I go back only to experience purgatory again.

Went to Cabelas to pick up a cheap hunting rifle ordered online. Wait for like 45 minutes to get my gun. The counter employee immediately says that my hunting license (DL does not have physical address) is not sufficient because it is a coyote night hunt license and not the large game license, and is therefore “a stamp, not a license.” Coyote night hunting license says -LICENSE- in large letters at top. Has me leave my place in line, go to customer service desk to have my large game hunting license printed.

I am a former FFL (sole proprietor, not employee of an FFL) and have used the coyote license for physical address at four other FFLs in the state for 4473s. It’s sufficient, but I didn’t argue because there’s no point.

I go back, it’s another half an hour of waiting. At this point I have missed a dinner reservation with my wife. Finally a guy named Chase helps me out and actually does a solid job, is clearly quite knowledgeable about firearms, ammunition, night vision and likely would not have hassled me about the license.

Cabelas blows. Chase deserves a better job and I am going back to kitchen table FFLs and dropshippers until I inevitably forget the pain of this experience in a few years and subject myself to it again.

I’ve wanted a 4 slot first gen operator for a long while, and the stars finally aligned. Snagged a Colt SE-A1, and rescued the Kimber Gold Combat RL II from a pawn shop in my quest.

Run and Gun

Are there any run and guns in the state? I’ve seen some similar events in NH like the Tactical Games. Didn’t know if I’ve been missing something in Maine though

SBR legal status since recent NFA court ruling.

I searched here for any recent news on this topic but didn’t find anything specific to SBR’s. My question is, if I’m a GOA member, can I swap out pistol braces for stocks without any NFA paperwork now? Or is this still murky waters? Thanks

Buying a Suppressor

What do I actually need to do to buy a suppressor? I see shops online saying in Maine you can just buy them with a background check. But some places are still saying I need to do a form 4/finger print/picture of myself?

Where to trade?

Not looking to advertise a firearm here or anything but is there a local resource or otherwise for trading? I have an upper I'm looking to swap for another caliber and I am lost on direction of where I might be able to go aside from trying to hit up the lgs or something.

Anyone aware of any shops in the state doing suppressors on 4473’s yet?

Just called with northeast firearms and they are not. Would like to hop on a few cans I’ve been looking at without having to do paperwork before anything may change. In Farmington but willing to drive pretty far if they have a Knights CRS PRT in stock.

Headed to Maine from MA, looking to shoot

Heading to the Paris, Maine area (from MA) for a few days at the end of August. Is there anywhere to shoot that doesn’t require being a member? Would love to get some practice in while I’m up there or a meet up! (Pic from last cleaning)

Anyone seen any Makarov magazines at LGS?

Ideally a double stacked original one, but I know that's like finding a unicorn, so a single stack surplus one would be fine too as they make adapters.

A tale of two ammo brands ..

Post image
12 Upvotes

I've only shot this p220 a few times, so I'm still getting used to it and wasn't expecting *great* groups, but was getting frustrated with the inconsistency - I'm usually at least ok. Then I tried different ammo. Yeah, it was the ammo. 4 mags pictured, alternating between white box, then federal, then back again, etc. White box on the left, federal on the right. Same guns, distance, grain. Not sure if it hates all white box, but it sure hates this batch. (Note: I'm not 100% certain the dot is zeroed, so I'm looking at precision here vs accuracy)

Questions about shooting on state land

Has anyone shot on public land near rangeley, Maine? Wondering if it's legal to find a place secluded on state land, set up targets, shoot, and then clean everything up. Has anyone done this and are there spots people use frequently?

Shipping handguns to Maine?

I live in Louisiana and am going to be visiting friends in Maine for an extended period. I'd love to be able bring a few handguns with me for target shooting during my visit. Flying/driving them is not an option. From the research I've done, it seems like the only option would be to mail them from an FFL in my state to an FFL near my friends, and then transfer the ownership of the guns to my Maine-resident friend at the FFL shop in Maine, then transfer them back at the end of the trip. Is there any potential legal setbacks with this plan, or a better way to go about it?
