Rival fans in the Premier League sub want us permanently banned from the top-flight of English football forever because our owner invested money into the club to break the status quo

The hysteria around this case has been insane, people literally claiming it's the biggest scandal in the history of the sport, jfc

u/ramenn15 15h ago
Not gonna lie it is one of "the biggest scandal" because we were actually good unlike some other clubs that are spending like us but ain't playing like us.

u/Abitou 15h ago edited 15h ago
Just look at the difference on how they treat Chelsea.
"But Chelsea admitted and reported their wrongdoings themselves" my ass, you're not as pissed at Chelsea only because they didn't come close to City's success.
Also, gotta remind that, if we were not successful, Rui Pinto probably wouldn't even had hacked the e-mails and no one would know anything. The PL and the majority of these journalists should be embarrassed that they needed a kid to hack some emails for them to proper enforce and police their own rules and to do their investigative work, respectively.

u/VOZ1 15h ago
Chelsea under Abramovich were entirely unapologetic. Only reason he was forced out was because he’s a literal Russian oligarch closely tied to Putin at a time when Russia was engaging in assassination attempts on British soil. Could you imagine the insanity if UAE had tried to assassinate someone on British soil?

This is one era of ownership for a club that is 146 years old... These people are so delusional.
30
u/KrayleyAML 15h ago
As a City fan, framing what our owners did as something revolutionary to break the "status quo" is quite the reach as well.
I don't think FFP is really fair, but I also believe that accepting FFP and then breaking it behind close doors is idiotic and shameless.
I'm not saying we're guilty of every single charge, and I'm not saying that I want my club relegated, but I won't be surprised when we do get some consequences and I need to accept them because the club broke the rules.
If the club wanted to make their stance against FFP, they should've done so when FFP was introduced. Not break the rules and then claim it was in the name of fairness.
On top of that, bringing a comment without blurring the name is quite cringe as well. It's also a call to brigade.
I love City and will do so until I die, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with the owners or praise them for something that was plainly wrong.
4
u/CocoHabibi2 13h ago
Yeah this is it. We had our fun but its likely that the club and its owners did do some dodgy stuff to compete. How much of it can we disprove at the appeal is still to be seen but as it stands we're going to get some punishments and a lot of it will be deserved. We dont need to agree with rival fans and media but its important we have a well balanced view of the sitiluation and be prepared for what will come inevitably. No matter what, our club will survive and move on from this.
0
u/Disastrous_Fig66 13h ago
Just keep the perspective that 'dodgy' was simply investing our own money in the club, not bribing refs.
I guarantee the amounts claimed by the PL are pure fiction. Time will show 10x inflated.
And then we are looking at it being a rounding error, enough to keep an extra sub on the bench.5
u/anonbutnormal 14h ago
This is the correct and nuanced take. The rule is unfair AND a bunch of spoiled oil magnates thought they could break it without impunity. Everything is not so black and white as the blood thirsty crowd thinks it is.
2
u/TwentyBagTaylor 13h ago
Absolutely. I'd like to be slightly more even minded on it than I am, but some of the vitriol you get is wild and kinda prompts a more combative outlook.
3
u/Disastrous_Fig66 13h ago
The PL choice of words and the utterly ridiculous 900m claim ensured that this would go nuclear. I'm certainly doubling down on my defence of the owners until I hear a guilty verdict in a truly impartial setting.
1
u/Disastrous_Fig66 13h ago
You are right, not everything is so black and white.
Maybe the spoiled oil magnates were just club owners that wanted to invest their own money and thought they found valid workarounds to the anti-competitive FFP rules.1
0
u/Disastrous_Fig66 14h ago
We didn't accept FFP. We voted against it but it was forced on us.
3
u/KrayleyAML 14h ago
We didn't agree with FFP, but we accepted FFP when we chose to stay and compete. The time to fight against FFP was then, getting support from other clubs who didn't agree and state our case.
City wasn't the only club who didn't agree, but we're the only club being charged 115 times. As a fan that's embarrassing and we should demand better from our owners instead of sucking them off.
-1
u/Disastrous_Fig66 13h ago edited 13h ago
Talk me through the options of how we could have not accepted it.
And how we could have gone about convincing clubs that didn't have wealthy owners that having other clubs with wealthy owners would be in their best interest.
I'm not embarrassed, I'm proud that we tried to find a way around the anti-competitive rules that were imposed upon us. And I believe our owners account of what actually happened more than the PL and their kangaroo court.
Save this prediction. The PL 900m claim will be dismantled. We'll be guilty of being too clever with our accounting and having overspent the equivalent amount to having Jack Rodwell on the bench for ten years.
Get behind the club until the appeal process is complete.
2
u/KrayleyAML 13h ago
We could've campaigned against it. Again, we weren't the only club who didn't agree.
If we had pushed other clubs who disagreed with FFP perhaps another conclusion could've been made. Funny you talk about feeling proud for the club finding a way around anti-competitive rules after the fact... The brave thing was fighting against it at all costs when it mattered, because the rules ARE unfair. Playing with numbers when no one can see you isn't brave, or something to be proud of, is foolish and cowardly.
I support the club because it's an historical club and the Sheik and his lot are simply a comma in Man City's history. And I'm happy the club is appealing because I genuinely don't believe we're guilty of ALL charges.
That being said I'm not stupid enough to believe we're not guilty of some of it, and I refuse to back some men doing shady stuff just because they happen to own my club. I didn't choose them, I didn't vote for them... Why the fuck should I praise them and back them for doing something wrong?
1
u/Disastrous_Fig66 12h ago
I think it's naive to suggest there was anything could have been done about it by campaigning back then.
And I'm not suggesting that we'll be found innocent, I think some of our clever accounting did cross the line but I hold no grudges for trying to get creative.
I simply feel the PL have been more corrupt than our owners have.

Refuse to participate in the PL. If that’s too extreme then you’ve just got to suck it up and campaign for change. That’s how all civilised societies operate so why should the PL be any different
1
u/Disastrous_Fig66 12h ago
Yes, agreed that would be too extreme.
So does staying in the PL because we have no alternative, and 'sucking it up' equal accepting it then?2

In the meantime I simply don't believe the PL's take on it and will defend the club and the owners.

Do you actually have any evidence that this wasn’t a ‘truly independent court’ beyond just not liking the verdict

But I'm glad to hear you asking for evidence, that's the spirit!

if rival fans want to feel that way, let them feel that way. they felt this way pre-verdict. i as a city fan don't have to convince them that, regardless of whether City gets relegated or not, everything we won would never be tarnished and i can be rational on the matter and draw the divide. i don't have to convince a rival fan and they are perfectly in their own right to feel however they want about my stance.

The rules were supposed to be to stop clubs being burdened with debt, not to stop investment and protect the established elite. We all know how rival fans would act if the shoe was on the other foot. Envy is all it is. You can say this to them till you're blue in the face, but they'll protest they are holier than thou.

u/farhantdm556 15h ago
Honestly the only clubs that iv seen complain about this case is Liverpool, Arsenal, and United, iv yet to see midtable clubs complain about this or the likes of Chealsea or Spurs to a massive degree. Why are the Red Cartel acting like this is going to start giving midtable or lower clubs a chance at trophies now???? They just want to eliminate the 1 club that's actually fighting a rigged system.
It's ironic when you look back at what Mourinho said about city how he said theyre good because of Football heritage, meanwhile the Reds are using theyre own Heritage as a justification that they should forever stay at the top for lifetimes simply because they were able to invest they're clubs before pushing such bogus finacial rules.

Let’s say we get kicked down to League 2. My fantasy scenario would have us:

3. The next season, win the Champions League.
4. Repeat step 3
2
u/Pepski37 15h ago
A permanent ban from the Premier League is a ridiculous idea. It's also why I don't agree with the idea of a seasons-long points deduction.
I think expulsion from the league needs to happen and it'll likely result in the club playing in League Two from next season if the EFL accept them. But then that's it - clean slate, fresh start. No starting each season on -30pts or whatever.

u/k17ab 14h ago
As much as, being a city fan myself, I don’t necessarily agree with what the board has done if they’ve done it as harshly as people say-
There’s absolutely no reason for us to be blamed for referring decisions. The state of PGMOL has been like this city or not. The red card grav got- sorry but absolutely awful decision. But that’s the thing with these governing bodies- probably trying to do anything they can to fuck anyone else over.
Personally, as for ffp rules I think teams should be able to put in their own money. Not billions yearly because anyone can see that’s just not okay- but a certain substantial amount.
It’s not just city affected by ffp charges allot of lower league teams are too. Yes we shouldn’t have cheated, but football should never be in the way that a team can really only win the premier league if they spend and spend and spend
1
u/PTRBoyz 14h ago
Ownership should be applauded.
-1
u/_ShireSeeker_ 14h ago
Cheating the rules over and over again, lying about it, and then preventing justice should be applauded? Why?
Or do you think the sportswashing part should be applauded?
Either way, I'm confused about why you would want to applaud them..
1
u/_ShireSeeker_ 14h ago
Just because you don't like the rules/law, that doesn't make it okay to break them. What a ridiculous argument.
People don't want city banned for investing money, they want them banned for breaking the rules over and over again, lying about it, and then preventing the investigation. It's unbelievable bad faith to claim it's just because money was put in.
0
u/Hod3601 15h ago
You lot must keep missing the point on purpose. Yes the rules are crap but Man City agreed to the same rules everyone else did then broke them. No one is doubting the rules are wrong, doesn’t mean you can break them.
5
u/Anes33 15h ago

1
u/_ShireSeeker_ 14h ago
Continuing to participate in the league means agreeing to the rules, even if you don't like them.
-3
u/nigeltrc72 14h ago
And by continuing to play in the PL we also agreed to them. We could have campaigned to have the rules changed. Instead we cheated to get around them and into the exclusive club with the ‘red cartel’ while making precisely zero effort to have the rules changed because at this point the rules benefit us as much as they do Liverpool.
0
u/stellfox-x 15h ago
Over time the criticism will fall back on the PL and dare I use the cliché the "red cartel".
Once they have their pound of flesh and realise that the prem is worse without City - and other clubs who are willing to invest.
When three American owned clubs compete to see who can spend the least to secure CL football.
When the jeopardy of not qualifying or relegation become so great that the super league comes around again.
But I think the oppo fans are cleverer than I gave them credit for they see it already - City cheating is an issue but fair play it isn't.
0
u/Environmental_Ad7296 14h ago
Prem allowed it themselves by being influenced by other clubs. Embarrassment of a corporation. They're nothing without us, so don't expect us to go anywhere anytime soon.

Seriously, mate. Stop trying to dress this up as some noble crusade against the establishment.
This isn’t about being revolutionary. It’s about breaking the rules and believing that having seemingly unlimited money puts them above everyone else
They’re behaving like spoilt little kids with bottomless pockets, convinced they can do whatever they want and throw enough money around to get their own way.
And somehow, you’ve convinced yourselves you’re the victims in all of this.

7
u/InjectMSGinmyveins 16h ago edited 15h ago
No, but I want them to be realistic, because most online fans are being flat out delusional.
Most of these people whining are big 6 fans, and the most wild part of this all is that what city did was to allow them to have the same buying power (or near it) to the other big clubs because the Abu Dahbi group wanted city to be an amazing club.
Each of these big 6 clubs have the spending capital, the scouts, and pretty much the same resources as city, and were able to sign the same players, yet they were unable to. And the most wild thing is that they want city to be relegated to the national league, when Juve did literally the same thing AND match fixed, yet got only a one tier demotion.
If you want my honest opinion, if city are found guilty, and the appeal doesn’t pan out in city’s favor, City should have a fine, a point deduction to demote them one tier, and a transfer ban for 1-2 years. That’s it, and that’s my worst case scenario punishment. Anything else is beyond delusional.

u/DelayedLightning 16h ago

I completely understand that the rules are no good, owners should absolutely be able to put more of their own money into their club if they wish but unfortunately the rules are the rules. Every other club complied and you guys didnt.
Also I’m not here to try and goad anybody nor do I wanna see you in league 2. Just after a genuine answer.
8
u/pipa_nips 15h ago
I think most City fans accept the team broke the rules. However, due to the other side of the argument pretending this is simply the worst, most egregious crime they've ever seen has driven a lot of sane, logical City fans to say fuck it and lean into this.
-4
u/Pepski37 15h ago
I firmly believe that the rules need changing and there needs to be a more level playing field in the Premier League, EFL and beyond.
But how is cooking the books for a decade and dominating for longer not the most egregious crime in the context of the sport?
4
u/IvarSturla 15h ago
Because there was no real advantage over the other “contenders” how is this fucking difficult for so many to understand.
-4
u/Pepski37 15h ago
£900m extra spent over 9 years wasn't a real advantage?!
5
u/IvarSturla 15h ago
Lol how am I supposed to have a legitimate argument/discussion with someone who doesn't even know what the 900m number actually is from. I'll help you out since you clearly haven't bothered reading ANYTHING past a headline. The 900m number being thrown around is the Alleged amount that our owner paid into sponsorship REVENUE rather than all directly from the sponsor company.
Even if you took it as spending like you are, that STILL doesn't have us above Chelsea and United's spending during this whole period, so Where's the big advantage??? why didn't chelsea and United win every season?
-6
u/Pepski37 15h ago
And that's against the rules, to the tune of £900m. A cash injection that other clubs weren't allowed to have and didn't manufacture.
Breaking the rules to spend as much as the richest clubs doesn't make fraud okay.
2
u/IvarSturla 15h ago
Thats the funny thing, Liverpool, United, Arsenal, Chelsea WERE ALLOWED TO HAVE THAT.
No it's not okay, absolutely correct, the rules are not okay.
4
u/pipa_nips 15h ago edited 15h ago
Dominating a league is a crime? Chelsea cooked the books with Abramovich and had a great run. Took a fine and moved on. Their current ownership is engaged in unbelievably dodgy practices - no one cares. Obviously seems like a much smaller amount than Man City, but still.
There have been allegations of match fixing in the past. A far greater crime.
Are the rules designed to avoid situations of owner funding that put teams in potentially negative situations that lead to financial crises or to protect the red cartel?
3
u/Acrystia 15h ago
I mean it's not like it's literal manslaughter and got the entire country banned from Eroupean football for half a decade...
-1
u/Pepski37 15h ago
One is a crime within the context of competition; the other was a systemic issue in English football with a horribly tragic end.
The fact that it was an issue across English football is why all clubs were banned and not just Liverpool. To my knowledge, nobody else has been financially doping to the tune of £1bn over a decade to destroy the integrity of the league.
5
5
u/FastCar_5 15h ago
To exactly who has this been unfair.
The red teams are already fielding billion dollar teams.
The other two clubs that have shown serious ambitions but cannot field billion $ teams and have been blocked by the rules are New Castle and Aston Villa, both of which aligned themselves with city's position about the rules with their votes a couple years back anyway.
Then we have spurs. let's just give them $1b, and see how many titles they can achieve. The amount of titles they can win over the next 7 years is the amount that we can take out from city lol. I think that's fair. To mitigate, city had been loosing to spurs anyway so they shouldn't complain much 🤣.

u/ClemencyOSRS 16h ago
A fan of MCFC, are there any rational non-city fans in here that can also tell me what else we are supposed to think?
-3
u/shoutsfrombuttholes 16h ago
That regardless of what you think is “fair” every club agreed to these rules and Man City broke them, which gave them an advantage on the pitch.
4
u/Frostbolter 15h ago
The general consensus among us is that we will accept any punishment they give us and we will still support the club no matter what happens
Just bring this to a neutral court that wasn't a few people appointed by the premier league and giving some excel spreadhsheets for proof. I'm not saying it's true, but put yourself in our shoes, would you consider this a no-bs foolproof evidence? OFC we'll keep backing our club until the very end, if you were in our shoes you'd do the same, just think about it
I don't get why LFC was pushing for lynching campaigns on the streets and people are blaming us fans for what's going on. That's why we've picked up the reins and are on a "villain" arc. We care about the club, so we're backing them until the bitter end. If we're truly found to have done these shady schemes, then I'll just find a way to watch the championship or whatever in my country and that's that. IDC about the prem, I care about City
6
u/IvarSturla 16h ago
You're supposed to look at the big picture and understand City didn't gain some big advantage over the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, United, Arsenal. Yes breaking rules is bad, but you can't be comparing this to matchfixing like many rivals are trying their hardest to.
1
-1
u/Haza-CC 15h ago
Yeah, you gained a massive advantage against your actual rivals, teams bouncing around mid table and the relegation spots
2
u/IvarSturla 15h ago
I agree, and I genuinely do feel bad for them, they’d bite their own hand off to get the same chance we got. But it’s so disingenuous to use that as justification from big 6 fans.
-2
u/vladimirandestragon 15h ago
If there was no advantage to be gained from cheating then why cheat?
Besides, per transfermarkt, City’s net transfer spend over the period in question was 1.8x the next largest spenders, not sure how that wouldn’t confer a significant advantage.3
u/IvarSturla 15h ago
I said no advantage over the likes of the big 6, meaning no real advantage over the main "Competition" we can cherry pick dates and times all we want to fit arguments, the period in question as you said even if that 1.8x is correct (I really have no idea), City "only" won 3 out of 9 titles. You can try and push this "cheating" as much as you want but I have no sympathy for the big 6 clubs/fans/players.
Any time I've heard someone who's not a real football/premier league fan chime in on this, they say how they don't get what the big deal is, "why are the other clubs allowed to spend" "those rules seem ridiculous and unfair"
2
u/rr18114 16h ago
The rules are made by the clubs who pulled the ladder up after the introduction of Premiere leauge.
The only thing I respect less than the rival clubs and it's fans are the rules set by the said rival clubs.
1
u/Pepski37 15h ago
The rules were agreed to by City each season that they played in the Premier League. Rules that needed 14 of 20 clubs to vote in favour of, whether or not City were part of that 14.
2
u/rr18114 15h ago
City never agreed to it. Glad they didn't, because those aren't rules. Those are custom guardrails.
1
u/_ShireSeeker_ 14h ago
City did agree to it, by continuing to participate in the league. That doesn't mean they liked them (or agreed that they should be a thing).
0
u/Pepski37 15h ago
I hope "custom guardrails" is in the dossier of "irrefutable evidence."
And clubs agree to the rules each season they submit the paperwork to play in the Premier League. Granted, no club is likely to say no and relegate themselves, but that's the process.
2
u/rr18114 14h ago
" irrefutable evidence " from City's side is probably not anyone's concern. I doubt it would convince you and your kind. City 100% cheated by the letter of the law. Nobody sane HERE is arguing against that. This thread is about what we all think. And most of us think that the rules set by the cartel are so unfair, that it's completely OK to make a mockery of them and the clubs which set them.
City is going to play this game and try to win again by either actually producing evidence which gets them off on technicality or throw a hailmary and go down swinging. City fans have to make peace with that.
Your objectively shit rules are not worth following. Clubs got cash injection in the past when these rules weren't set. These cartel clubs don't control Man City. But they do control the premiere league so City have to play dirty and see if they can win.

9 of which have never had any chance of ever breaking thru. They played it safe. If City's owners were not filthy rich, City would be one of the clubs voting in favor as well. But that isn't the case is it ? The red cartel didn't want further competition. They still don't.
Don't hide behind that 14 in favor 5 against farce. And if you insist on hiding behind it, do it in the r/soccer or your own club sub.

Hiding behind what? You suggested the motive was pulling the ladder up behind them, which of course was not what most of the clubs were doing.
The premier league is a democracy, City can convince and lobby other clubs.
If the red cartel exists and is so awful and horrible, why can't they convince other teams to come with them?

The other clubs are not backed by filthy rich owners. They have virtually no chance. It was in their best interest to stop one of their own from making the leap.
In another timeline, it could have just as easily been another mid-table or relegation club and City being one of the clubs being rolled over.
Premiere league is not a democracy. Please don't make me laugh.

Sorry so what's your suggestion then? The clubs should have just allowed City to outspend everyone with their vast wealth and hoover up titles?
How is that better than FFP!

Nope. The clubs should have come up with a fairer set of rules in the first place. Formula 2 rules, not Formula 1.
Either that or let every club fend off for themselves. Either they find a rich owner like some clubs did or they perish. But they would have nobody to blame other than themselves.
What you stingy people wanted was instead, to have these clubs play a rigged competition. The red cartel hates City because they mocked them by showing them how to
Use money ( City definitely succeeded here despite having 1 less CL than what they were truly capable of. Nobody can argue against that )
Cook books ( City potentially failed here but we shall see...)
Also, unless you are some Watford or Everton fan, don't lump yourself with other less fortunate clubs.City didn't have any advantage over Liverpool , Chelsea , United and Arsenal. Other clubs have a right to be angry.

No no what I want is a spending and salary cap, had city been advocating for that I would have loved it.
Other clubs should be angry with City!! City cheated the rules all the other clubs agreed to abide by.
If it's a hierarchy of ideas for me it's:
- Spending Cap
- What we have now
- You survival of the fittest everyone can spend as much as they like.
That is so deeply unfair I am so glad that it will never happen.
I'm a Leicester fan by the way

I think a lot of the reactions are emotional ones, and I get it (its football). A lot of the suggestions are completely over the top though, and they generate an equal reaction from City fans - that's the game we're now playing and City fans are adept at it. I think taking a step back would help a lot of people. Realising that regardless of what happened in those seasons City won. You can't travel back in time. You can't prove X or Y team would have won the league because it doesn't work that way.

No, it's because you cheated on an industrial scale for at least a decade and have obfuscated, lied and obstructed every step of the way.

Remember the non-compliance, it becomes near impossible to enforce rules agreed upon by ALL members when your blocked from seeing the evidence you need and where accused members use the High Court to try and block you. If City continue to appeal via the High Court after they have already appealed both the verdict and the punishment then they just have to be expelled to give the rest of football a rest from this nonsense

As a Newcastle fan a big part of me wants you to succeed in your appeal, as that'll open the door for us to be able to be more competitive. Fuck the red cartel.
