Convince Me To Go M43

Hey all. So I'm in the market for a new secondary/travel/knockaround photography camera. Something that's small that I can have with me at all times and not feel like a kettle bell in my bag but also not so awfully tiny that it feels like a toy in big hands.

I've been looking at the Sony a6400 used, but a lot of people in other communities and threads have told me m43 is the place to be. The thing is, there's SO much. I have no clue where to even properly start. Any suggestions would be great.

Budget: $650usd for body.
Shipping within or to the US, ideally within. (Ebay, MPB or Amazon Used/Refurb)

I know it's a big ask, but I really don't want anything too old(sluggish) because it would be nice to have it as a backup cam when I'm working events(My main is a Canon 5DM4).

Thanks in advance.

OM1-ii + 12-40 2.8 pro ii Endgame One Lens Travel?

I’ve read an over a dozen posts and everyone seems to say the 12-40 2.8 pro is one of the best lenses out there for M43. I have an OM1-ii and there is a used 12-40 pro ii for sale new me. Would this be the ultimate endgame 1 lens travel set up? Also walk around, nature, car show, indoor outdoor low light and just an every day general purpose setup?

Is the weather sealing on the OM1-ii with this lens really good enough to take it out in the rain or a snow storm without worry?

Quality of OM System gear?

I have been a user of m4/3 gear since the inception of the format and have had many Lumix and Olympus cameras and lenses over the years.

I was disappointed when Olympus bailed and a new ownership took over.

Does the new OM System gear live up to the quality of what the former company (Olympus) produced? Both bodies and lenses?

About 43 to m43 adapters

I've owned three adapters for older Four Thirds lenses. They all worked perfectly at first, but after a few years of light use, they started having synchronization problems: the image would go black, the focus would stop working, and the aperture setting wouldn't display. This one is a "Viltrox".

My question is: Do Panasonic or Olympus adapters last longer, or do they wear out over time?

Bonus photo from a parade, where the adapter only worked half the time.

It's 'Post your M43 photo' Thursday! Come share your best work with the community!

You've spent an entire week with your Micro Four-Thirds camera, documenting the world as it is, how it was, or how you think it should be. It's time to show us those photos and bask in the glory that only a weekly photo thread can bring!

Rules:

  1. The photo must be your own. No cross-posting someone else's work.
  2. You may only post one photo per week. Pick only your best work and show it off!
  3. Post your photo in a top-level comment for maximum exposure! (hehe get it, "exposure"?)
  4. Include as much detail as possible about the camera, the lens and the environment as possible. Good: "Shot with Olympus OM-D E-M1 w/ Panasonic 25mm f/1.8 lens @ 25mm f/2.0 ISO100 Time: 5:40PM in Los Angeles, California" Bad: "Look at this shot, isn't it neat?"
  5. Above all, be respectful. There's a big difference between the following comments: "OMG THAT PHOTO IS HORRIBLE" and "The lighting coming off his face looks uneven".

The Handheld Hi-Res mode on the OM-5 is basically a built-in star tracker

When you pair this computational feature with an ultra-wide lens, the results are fantastic. This is a single RAW file straight out of the camera, but it’s actually stacked internally from 8 frames. Living up in North Scotland means the galactic core is always hiding below the horizon for me, but it's still mind-blowing what this tiny sensor can pull out of the dark.

OM-5 + TTartisan 7.5mm, f2, 30 sec (8x30s HHR), ISO2000

EDIT: Forgot to mention one crucial detail: a tripod is absolutely mandatory for this. The whole process takes about 5 minutes of camera work, so actually handholding it is impossible. The trick is that you must use the Handheld Hi-Res mode while mounted on the tripod. The standard Tripod Hi-Res mode doesn't align the moving stars, so it will just give you star trails instead.

It's my first week of using the camera, and I don't have much experience. My focus was only on the fireworks. I couldn't capture any of the background details as it was very dark.

I switched over to M43 from Fuji recently and haven’t regretted the decision once. I’m not the best photographer, but I feel more motivated to shoot on this than I did with my previous Fuji camera. I’m feeling the same passion I had when I first picked up a camera 20 years ago. Love this camera.

🔍 Fujian 25mm f1.4

One of my favorite lenses for the APS-C system is the Fujian 35mm f/1.7. It's a crappy CCTV lens—cheap, low quality, and hard to use... but once I started to nail it, it produced some of my most moody and cinematic images.

When I switched to the OM-5, my quest began to find an equivalent lens for the Micro Four Thirds system. I found the Fujian 25mm f/1.4.Swirled Away This lens is even worse... and even more difficult to use... but it has that cool swirly bokeh. It gives a great opportunity to revisit the same places through a fresh perspective.

Sigma's new lens looks great and is getting rave reviews. Do we have any hope for a MFT Mount version in the future?

Struggling with light in sport photography

Hey,

Currently running a GH4 with a few lens, i mostly use my 14-140mm f3.5-5.6 (2026) on trails for mtb photography.

Id say i stay in the 35-65mm zone mostly, but would benefit going around the 100mm on some trails.

The 14-140 3.5-5.6 is great, not the sharpest but great for what i ask, but i often struggle getting the light due to threes or evening session.

I shoot at 1/1000, and stay at 800iso max else the grain make things worse then the lack of light.

I move and change spot a lot and it is the reason why i don't use fixed focal lens, i need it to be pretty versatile.

I wonder what would you recommend?

Getting a faster lens? Like a 35-100mm f2.8?

Replacing my GH4? Since i come from video a GH7 sounds great but i don't know if upgrading mean id be able to get higher isowise.

Ps: i don't plan on switching to FF, here's the other lenses i own:

7.5mm f3.5 rokinon

20mm f1.7 panasonic

12-16mm dx2 tokina +speedbooster

70-200mm + converter minolta (mostly stays on my analog setup)

35-105mm + converter minolta (mostly stays on my analog setup)

Thanks for the help!

Got a Nikon Z50II for more serious portraits/birding, thinking about selling my OM-5 to get an even more compact M43 body as EDC, would you go E-P7 or E-P5 or one of the E-PL line?

Basically title, but the M43 lenses I have and love are the DJI 15mm f1.7, Oly 25mm f1.8 and Oly 45mm f1.8. So already pretty small lenses. Looking to get something without the viewfinder hump, and while I like using the viewfinder for more serious work, this will be a very casual body for edc use. What would you do?

E-P7 would be a wash in sale price to purchase price given the hit i'll take on Ebay cut, but I might come out ahead with the E-P5 or an E-PL body, what do you guys think?

Should I consider the gx85 or gm series body?
