I saw this character at the Party Tree recently. Only the most dedicated roleplayers remove their legs to truly embody a gift box.

New Player: Confused: Champion or Hunter: “Don't pick either one!”

• Upvotes

Hello, fellow heroes,

I'd like to ask for your advice once again. A while back, as a newcomer to the game, I was having huge problems: New player, Difficulty 3—I couldn't beat some enemies. Thanks to your help and advice, things got much better.

So I chose two classes: Champion and Hunter. I love them both. And I NEVER would have thought that, because up until now, I’ve never really loved ranged classes in any game (though I don’t play much—GW2, ESO).

Okay, I played both classes up to level 20, deleted both, and started over from scratch on Difficulty 3. Taking my time, read all texts, enjoy the Landscape. Both noew ones are now past Bree, level 23, ready to head to the next area.

So, time to decide: I’ve been watching a bit of Twitch lately. And surprise:

Two streamers clearly advised me against both classes!

As a new player, I wouldn’t really be able to get good gear for the Champion through quests and Loot. I’d fall behind at higher levels and run into massive gameplay issues.

And the Ranger? Good at first—mobile, fast travel—but later on, mobs with adds would appear or stand in groups, and the Ranger would be (currently) pretty useless. Much Damage bus enemies should take only one hit. As a hunter in my situation, the gameplay is just tough...

Some people in the chats confirmed this: As a long-time player with gear and crafting_ Everything would be easy. But as a new player, only Questrewars: i run into problems.

By the way, I’m not interested in groups, being carried, or raids—I just want to be able to play and explore...

So, both the chat and the streamers advised against both classes. (wtf?)=

But how am I—or any new player—supposed to even get started? And according to Reddit, YouTube, and the internet, these two classes are supposedly ideal.

That is, until the point where in-game rewards, items earned, and gameplay later on seem to diverge massively.

Even though I feel more like a melee fighter—the fantasy of “that could be me!” and role-playing in my head—I ended up playing the Hunter. Simply because I hoped to make up for my lack of gear with ranged combat.

And then I hear: That only works for a while, and not really later on.

PLEASE ADVISE: You’re the experienced players. Can I still make the Hunter work as a new player without any gear? Or should I choose the more forgiving Champion, but then deal with a lack of gear?

Thanks for your time; I’m hoping for your invaluable advice,

Regards, R.

First timer + on steam deck, the UI is intimidating

• Upvotes

I'm sure the game is easy and easier over time, but I was never into MMOs and the controls on the deck are a bit hard to get comfortable for someone whos not big into PC gaming, and the small screen of the deck makes it a bit much to deal with the UI.

Any suggestions on what can I remove from the UI for it to be less crowded and enjoy more of an immersive experience rather than a MMO numbers game? Also any control schemes from my fellow deck users would be nice, right now I'm using "[notINSANE] The Lord of the rings online"

Hello! Today, I bring you a little bit of landscape-p*rn. And just so you know, yes, I too love the game's original art style, but sometimes we can dream a little and enjoy just a bit more realism on top of what the game already provides.

New instances in WoM

Since there's a new expansion coming out and no level increase what does that mean for when WoM releases its new 3 and 6 man instances? Will gear dropped in KoH become obsolete after the new instances open? If not, what becomes the main incentive to do them over what's already available aside just the fun of new challenges? What is the experience from other same level expansions in the past?

To the band of minstrels I saw in Bree last night.

I just picked up this game less than a week ago and, as a long time Tolkien nerd, I'm not sure why it took me this long.

However, imagine my surprise when I saw a group playing Mr. Roboto by Styx on instruments in game. That was the single best thing I've ever come across in any mmo I've ever played in the 20ish years I've been playing them.

As a busy dad (and fellow musician) now with only so much time to myself, watching you fine folks playing a song like that in the game literally made my day.

Thank you for doing what you do.

Legendary Weapon Question

I am a Level 80 Captain that was using a 2H sword legendary up until I realized how boring humans are and switched races to river-hobbit :D Therefore I dropped the 2H sword and went with a helbard for the 5% dmg and 2% crit boost.

Now I got the legendary 2H sword with some traceries and a legendary halberd with nothing in it. My bank is filled with unopened boxes from the legendary reward track and my question is..

On what Level should I start opening these? I know that there are some Legendary weapon brackets. Someone said that I should open them at Level 101 but I am unsure. I know it's probably super doable to get to level 101 with a 'naked' legendary weapon but it somehow feels wrong :D What should I doooo?

Endgame Question

Hello! I'm a new lotro player, but I've played a lot of MMOs from casual to hardcore end game raiding. Currently I'm retiring from WoW and want to hang out in lotro for a while now that I've been playing for a few weeks casually - I'm really loving this experience.

My question is what is the end game actually like? I can tell it is not fast to level and I'm not worried about that, but the difficulty of the raids, dungeons, etc. What does the end game cycle consist of?

I've been a healer main in m+ and raiding I'm playing minstrel and second character will be a rune keeper.

"Smart App" is blocking Lotro

Windows 11 updated itself with an apparently non-optional update yesterday, and now it's blocking Lotro. I got a message saying "Smart App Control blocked an app that may be unsafe. We blocked [Lotro launcher] because we could not verify its publisher to confirm it was safe to run. This app has been blocked to help protect your device and data. Microsoft will review the app to confirm whether it's safe." Has anybody else encountered this, and if so, what did you do to get back into the game?

Midi to ABC

New player. Roughly 80 hours in now. Playing minstrel and loving it! I figured out how to create the music file and download ABC files last night, and the thought struck me, My Dad passed away in march, we where very close and both really loved music.

There are a collection of songs that will always remind me of him and all the times in his truck listening to old cassette tapes like Tennessee Earnie Ford, obscure Johnny Cash songs, and a collection of others. I want to teach myself how to convert these into the highest quality ABC files for solo play that I can, because sometimes late at night I may just want to enjoy the view lost somewhere in middle earth and take a moment to remember dad.

I have no idea how to go about it. What is the best software to convert? I would imagine it needs to be converted based on what instrument you want to play it on? Any resources you can point me to or tips would be greatly appreciated.

How can anyone complain about this game's graphics? Coming from WoW, this game literally feels like GTA VI by comparison. I often find myself just walking around nature like an idiot doing nothing beyond sightseeing from how beautifully immersive I find environments to be.

I learned about this game just 4 days ago, and I've already poured 16 hours into it.

Basically, I'm a WoW player who, for a long time, had been looking forward to a "Classic" experience (focus on a slower paced adventure across the world, unlike Retail), but with improved graphics; to me, the visual aspect of a game is actually VERY important. If I am to spend hours immersing myself in a virtual world instead of the real one, it may as well at least look as beautiful as possible, right...?

So; Forever was announced and I was mostly hyped; until I saw that, once again, the multibillion dollar company held back the graphics to 2004 levels for the most part because a loud minority of the WoW playerbase can't let go of their nostalgia and riot every time there's any sort of visual improvement that deviates the looks from what they were back in 2004.

In this context, I discovered LOTRO through a YouTube Short (someone making the whole Frodo walk) and chose to give it a try. Not only is the gameplay EXACTLY what I was looking for; I find the game to be a really cozy and beautiful place to be in. So I was surprised when I saw that many YouTube and Reddit comment sections were dunking on "how trash and old it looked", because, compared to what I'm used, it looks extraordinary.

I wanna play but somewhow lost everything I had

I think it was last year that I started (again) playing lotro, my main goal was to really immerse myself in the game, admiring the world, beign part of the story, I was enjoying every little bit of it. My main goal of all time was getting a mount. I remember playing back in the day (I think it was around 2011) when getting a mount was extremely hard, you got one quest that gave you one but it was for a limited time. So this time I was focusing on getting some lotro coins and purchasing a permanent one. But around this time I was playing there was an event, I think a spring event, and I did a bunch of quests and after all these years I finally could purchase an elk, my character was an elf ranger so the sinergy was perfect. I was so happy.

About 2 or 3 months back, I wanted to give the game another shot, since I was having some free time, but after I logged in my character was gone. I read online that there were some merge or issues with the servers, and I guess I lost all my progress.

So, I want to come back, but I dont want to feel like questing is just a chore to get from A to B just to get my mount.

What should be my approach here? I always played ranger/hunter human/elf, I was thinking on roling a hobbit loremaster just because I read that yellow is fun and complicated.

Im looking forward to read your comments!

EDIT: thank you for your comments, didnt know the option to transfer was still available, im doingloading the game right now to check!

There is stuff in my household that does’t belong to me!!

Hi everyone! So I have a house in Falathlorn on the Glamdring server. I hadn’t been to it in a while, and I opened up my house vault see if I’ve left anything there, and lo and behold to my surprise, a huge collection of things, mostly dwarf things, nearly filled the entire chest! Some had been bought with figments of splendor, others, probably game rewards, etc. There is some trade-in value to those figment pieces, too, as you can turn them in for figments at the barterer. I feel really bad for the person who must be missing these things, and I’m hesitant to claim ownership for that reason. Is there anyway I can resolve this issue??

My Thoughts as a F2P Player who Just Finished Volume 2

TLDR: My volume 1 rumblings can be found on this reddit post. A bunch of people were saying that Moria would be amazing. You were definitely right. It also had the best quest I've done to date and was much more streamlined than Volume 1.

Onto my thoughts! I hit the end of volume 2 at ~51hours played as a F2P Dwarf Champion (total playtime of ~154hrs). Like with Volume 1, I followed the epic story and did quests in the zone I was in to keep up level wise. I didn't go out of my way to complete every deed/quest in a zone but I took my time and kept all 3 professions up to date.

  1. The quest with the mirror hall of Lumul-nar was very fun. The best quest I've done so far in the game. It got weird at the end when you fight the "boss" and I ended up dying once due to a line-of-sight issue. After the run back, I ended up just jumping down to the platform and finished it without issues.

  2. I've given up on professions. I still kept them up to date, but mainly out of stubbornness and hoping it becomes useful at some point. I did try to craft one item, but I didn't realize there were single use recipes in the game. I don't agree with this choice. It would be different if you could "stack charges" but its literally craft an item, hope you find the recipe again or keep a duplicate in your inventory until you craft the first one.

  3. The introduction of Scenarios was interesting. So far they feel the same as the instanced quests, but I'm hoping they become more diverse in the future. On a side note, I ended up screwing up at first and didn't realize there was a skirmish camp in the 21st hall. I ended up Milestoning out to do the Skirmish intro quest at Bree and then ride back into Moria to continue the story.

  4. I don't like how the combat feels in Session plays. I understand the idea behind them (to get a different POV of an event), but the combat is very underwhelming when you've been used to your character's abilities for so long. The power change dynamic is jarring. Maybe this is how it used to feel when combat was harder?

  5. What is the deal with Mithril flakes? Took me 300 ore before I got the first one, and another 175 before I got the second. I'm guessing this is due to when it was an end game item but it would be nice if this was changed now. By the time I got one, what I wanted to craft was already out-scaled.

  6. I got to see Gandalf's stand and parts of where the Balrog battle took place! Huge plus that the Dev's included this in the storyline. At one point when I was climbing the endless stairs, I wondered if I missed the quest item only to find it several more winding steps up. It gave a nice scale to things.

  7. Some of the epilogue quests required in game instances so I'll have to come back for them. So far I haven't had much luck running a dungeon. In fact, I've only done 1 in my current game play. I know this will change at higher levels, but it's sad to see this part of the gameplay largely ignored.

  8. The night-time only quest with the lanterns in Lothlorian was a nice touch. I finally ended up trying to figure out how the day/night cycle in the game worked.

Onto volume 3 and the rangers!

Hardcore LOTRO | Updates on Enforced Rules, Community Deathlog & Chronicle

Thumbnail
youtube.com
49 Upvotes

This is a passion project that I've been working on for about 4 months now.
https://www.lotrointerface.com/downloads/info1289-HardcoreLite.html

I have a few videos and discussions on Discord about all the features that are included and are yet to come.

This release build includes 3 core HardcoreLite features

One of the reasons why I started this project is because there are so many features, locations, creatures, quests and mechanics hidden away from a normal LOTRO play-through that I would have never discovered if I didn't increase the difficulty of the game. I learned to play the game at a different pace and pay attention to every detail, every item, monster and zone that I fell in love with the game in a completely different way compared to any other mmorpg I've played.

I built this completely on my own and I've met so many great people here on reddit, youtube, discord and in the game that have all helped me out on my very first scripting/programming project.

I have released this update without the Chronicle achievement system because we are still play-testing over 100 different quests and challenges that I've created. I didn't want to release a half-finished version of the Chronicle even though its very close to completion.
This season of the Chronicle will focus on the level 1-50 zones with all different types of challenges from exploring many parts of Eriador, hunting rare mobs and items, and even discovering hidden achievements for playing each class. You'll be able to compete for the highest scores, fastest times, largest collection in the journal, amongst other things that I'm sure the community will come up with.

I want everyone to enjoy how large and friendly the lotro hardcore community has grown so I've released the main social features with this patch while I continue to work on the Chronicle.

Thank you all for the support thus far!
I'm open to all feedback in the comments!

Minstrel Yelling

New player, picked minstrel and absolutely loving except for two things, the yellow glowy hands, and the lack of variance in the shouts. I do not want to fully mute the shouts our with R-Alt, but wondering if its possible, or has ever been attempted to create a plug-in offering rotating or selectable sound files for the shouts?

This may be hardcoded and impossible to change, but thought it worth investigating.

Captain Standards Cosmetics?

Hi all, just wondering if Captain Standards (https://lotro-wiki.com/wiki/Captain_Items_Index#Captain_Standards) have available cosmetics? When I equip the Standard in my Captain's ranged slot, it's essentially invisible, and I'm wondering if there are any "visibility" cosmetics that allow the standard to be shown in some way. I've tried putting other items (bows, instruments) there in the Cosmetic Outfit tab but it understandably gives me this error:

"This item is of type <Instrument|Bow> while your equipped item is of type Class Item. This cosmetic item will not be shown."
