lojban.io: a free and opensource platform for studying lojban

coi ro do

I am pleased to finally announce an experimental version of lojban.io, a brand-new platform for studying Lojban with the aid of interactive exercises. You may also install the (web-based) app from the Play Store.

This platform is free and opensource, and is intended to be expanded and enhanced by the Lojbanic community. Whether you are a newcomer or an experienced Lojbanist, please try it out and report any issues you find. Feedback will be tremendously appreciated.

In addition to reporting issues, there are many different ways to actively contribute to this project (for programmers as well as nonprogrammers), ranging from highly localised, and hence low commitment (e.g. helping us individually curate sentences for use in exercises), to very broad (e.g. writing an entirely new course, or an entirely new deck). For more details, please visit our GitHub page.

Scope

This platform is intended to help newcomers get started with the language, and to help intermediate-level students consolidate their knowledge more quickly. It will not by any means get anyone to fluency. But we hope it will help people more quickly get to a level where they can perform more interesting activities, such as talking to friends and reading texts (with the help of a dictionary). With interactive exercises, we also hope to make their journey a bit more fun.

Technical aspects

An interesting feature of this project is automatic sentence canonicalization. While validating student attempts to exercises, we algorithmically canonicalize both the student's answer and the model sentence(s). If the results match, the attempt is considered correct.

For example, we automatically recognize "mi tavla do" and "do se tavla mi" as equivalent sentences (they both get canonicalized to "mi tavla do").

Here are a few more complex examples illustrating what is currently supported:

  • "mi tavla fi lo mlatu" ~~ "mi tavla zo'e lo mlatu"
  • "lo selta'a cu prenu" ~~ "lo se tavla ku prenu"
  • "mi pu fanva sepi'o lo skami" ~~ "pu ku mi fanva fi'o se pilno fe'u lo skami ku"
  • "lo tavla be fi do cu pendo" ~~"lo tavla be zo'e bei do be'o ku pendo"
  • "lo mi gerku cu melbi" ~~ "lo gerku pe mi cu melbi"
  • "mi ctuca fo le bangu" ~~ "mi ctuca zo'e zo'e le bangu ku"
  • "mi djuno lo du'u lo gerku poi do dunda ke'a mi cu pendo" ~~ "mi djuno lo du'u lo gerku ku poi do dunda ke'a mi ku'o pendo kei ku"

For a more complete picture of what is currently supported, please refer to our unit tests.

Our code for sentence canonicalization builds upon Yoshikuni Jujo's zasni-gerna parser, so many thanks to Yoshikuni for creating it!

What video games do you recommend for lojbanists?

I recommend playing The Message From Deep Space

The use of Lojban isn't in the game. Still, I think Lojbanists like it. Simply put, the appreciation of language is among its themes.

Hopefully my Lojban isn't completely broken, I always have to look things up when I write anything more complicated than "I like cats"

YouTube Playlist: Lojban in 2026

I collected as many recent videos in or about Lojban as I could find, excluding songs that were clearly low-effort or auto-generated...so there's no "splita lo blaci," if you remember the Reddit post about that one.

(This also includes late 2025, by mistake, but I really want to keep the podcast and the plate of cheesy pasta shells on there.)

First abstractors for beginners.

I noticed that many people are interested in the topic of cmavo in Lojban, specifically abstractors like nu, ka, du'u, and others. Today, I will try to explain lo nu, le nu, and nu—what the difference is between them and how to use them. Let's start with the fact that nu means "process." When we want to say that this is the subject's process (that is, a fact), we say lo nu or le nu. For example: mi djica lo nu mi cilre lo jbobau. Translation: I want the process of my learning the Lojban language. Or more simply: I want to learn the Lojban language. What is the difference between le nu and lo nu? It's easy to remember: when we want to point specifically to something, we use le. Example 1: le mlatu ku melbi—meaning this specific cat is beautiful. Example 2: le prenu cu pensi lo prenu—this specific person is thinking about a person. Thus, le nu refers to this specific process, while lo nu is more general. And what does nu on its own mean? This thing is highly situational and rarely used. You won't see it very often, but you still need to know it. A bare nu is used when you want to talk about a process that exists merely as an idea or by its nature, rather than as an actual fact. For instance, lo nu tcidu is denoted as "that which is a process of reading"—the process as an actual fact. On the other hand, nu tcidu without lo simply means "to be a process of reading" or "to manifest as a process of reading"—that is, something highly abstract and mental. The usage of nu is actually very context-dependent. Its meaning can shift slightly depending on its position in a sentence, but I’ve already covered its main core meaning above.

Explanations for beginners. If you want to add something, feel free to share it in the comments!

Hey everyone, I've been wondering how hard it is for Lojban beginners to grasp abstractors like 'nu', 'ka', etc. I'm thinking about making a post with a simple, clear explanation. If you guys are interested, I’ll explain most of the abstractors in my next post.

What is the eighth vowel? And the 7th, and the 14th?

I was trying to look for more reflexive pronouns (vo'V) for use in a 14-argument experimental predicate (jbolotomi). But I cannot find ones past #5.

You can easily generalize to #6 (vo'y), but for #7 you need a 7th vowel. Same for #8, and all others up to 14.

So, I have to ask.

What is the eighth vowel?

Section 10.5 the complete lojban

I am studying from the book and found the time and space tenses very interesting.

I find the translation for example 10.28 and 10.29 a bit ackward. especially that they mean different things. can anyone comment ona more natural way for an English speaker to understand these?

Example 10.28.

mi pu ze'aba citka le mi sanmi
I [past] [medium-time-interval-future] eat the of-me meal.
For a medium time afterward, I ate my meal.
I ate my meal for a while.

With ca instead of ba , Example 10.28 becomes Example 10.29 ,

Example 10.29.

mi pu ze'aca citka le mi sanmi
I [past] [medium-time-interval-present] eat the of-me meal.
For a medium time before and afterward, I ate my meal.
I ate my meal for a while.

I give you the gift Spoiler

I am reading from “The complete lojban”. The writer gave an example of the description sumti. the example being

“mi tavla do le tavla.”

I speak to you about the speaker. so the selbri is referencing something which is part of the definition of the selbrI.

so How would one say, “ I give the gift to you”?

I am supposing one would say

MI dunda le se dunda do.

I’m not sure if that is correct.

if one said , mi dunda le dunda do, wouldn’t that mean, I give the giver to you?

if anyone has insight into this that would be helpful. And is there a specific chapter which addresses this?

The Wait Is Over: "All Star" in Lojban

...Okay it's just the lyrics, and first you have to go through my strange picture of Shrek/la crek. plus my long story about Smash Mouth/la maxmol. but other than that, YES, no longer will you be FORCED to put up with the English lyrics for All Star/la tarzan.

Translation Note: I try to use "pe'a" to mark figurative language or "ba'u" to mark exaggeration whenever I can, but I skimped to keep the rhythm of the song. I also missed out on some puns.

Lojban Animated Short: le trene co tolmo'i (English Subtitles)

A station waits for the train, and keeps waiting. Includes subtitles in both English and Lojban.

NOTE: Audio was recorded on a cheap phone and I'm realizing now that I mispronounced "va'o" as "va'u" (and maybe mispronounced other things too, .i .u'u). I'm hoping the style can somewhat make up for that.

Possible gismu forms of digits

These are hypothetical gismu forms of digits created to fit with the affixes for numbers and to avoid having to add -mei to number words when used as verbs. Some sounds in the words were also taken from the source languages.

Number PA word Affix Possible gismu
0 no -non- nocno
1 pa -pav- pavdi
2 re -rel- reldo
3 ci -cib- tcibe
4 vo -von- vorna
5 mu -mum- mumsa
6 xa -xav- xlavu
7 ze -zel- zesla
8 bi -biv- bivba
9 so -soz- snoza
A, 10 dau -duv-dek-1 dekto1
B, 11 fei -fel- felci
C, 12 gai -gam- garmi
D, 13 jau -juz- juzre
E, 14 rei, xei2 -xem-2 xremi2
F, 15 vai -vav- vravi

1The digit A (10) is the only one of these that already has a gismu so its affix is shown alongside dau.

2Both rei and xei exist for E (14), but only xei has a proposed affix. The r in xremi was added to be inclusive to rei.

This makes it easier to express values which do not already have digits and are not round multiples of ten as verbs. For example, being a set of 108, instead of being expressed as panobimei or pavnonbivmei, can be expressed as ctobivba "hundred-eight."

Place value expression is also allowed with this system, so instead of expressing 123 450 006 as parecivomunoki’oxa "one-two-three-four-five-zero-thousands-six," it can be expressed as ctoreldekcibymegykemvonctomumdekyki’okepkemxlavu "(hundred-two-ten-three-million)-(four-hundred-five-ten-thousand)-six." (This is obviously longer but at least it is clearer which digits are the thousands, millions, etc. and this can be useful to break down larger numbers beyond using just ki’o.) Since Lojban only has roots for powers of ten, it would only work for base ten numbers, but it would make it clearer that these are base ten, so you would not get the same kind of variability you get with panono (which depending on the base will not always correspond to xecto).

1The brodV series have been in the official standard, but recently all except broda got moved to experimental (does anybody know why?)

2This could take the rafsi -pov- but one lujvo has it as an experimental rafsi for po’o.

I would really want to see some of these have new rafsi but I am not asking that all of these get one. Because several of these words are just not going to be used in compounds.

About rafsi used in type-3 fu’ivla

Why are CCVC- and CVCC- forms used for type-3 fu’ivla when there is a simpler CVC- rafsi that works? For example the vlasisku dictionary has jinmrmalume and tricrkorilu but no jimrmalume and ricrkorilu.

Resources for heavy lifters like 'where'?

I was working on building a study guide but looking at a study guide for a different language (norsk). And I realized that words like 'where' do a lot of heavy lifting in English and Norwegian.

This led me to trying to write a page on how to get the effect of 'where' in lojban.

Where [often x_3 in gismu]

- place : ma stuzi

- direction: ma pluta / ma jalge

- state condition: ma tcini

Is there a resource for where/from/of/when to lojban gismu? It feels like fi is one of those heavy lifters for these types of connectors.

Alternatively, is there a rationale for the fa fe fi fo fu common use cases.

What’s the difference between lo se xabju and lo zdani?

I think I understand lo zdani, it’s very straightforward. But while learning about place conversions (se, te, ve, xe), I’m really struggling to understand: 1. Which is used and why. 2. Why this is possible at all.
