Been mixing punk and alternative rock in Logic for a few years, and the thing that always frustrated me is how much advice assumes you've bought FabFilter or Waves. There's little written for people who want to stay on stock plugins, and what exists is generic.
So I wrote mine down. Logic only, no third-party anything.
The part people seem to find most useful is the drum compression, because it's per-piece rather than "put a compressor on the drum bus":
- Kick: Studio VCA or Studio FET
- Snare: Vintage FET
- Snare sample (reinforcement): Vintage VCA
- Toms and overheads: Platinum Digital
- Hi-hat: Vintage Opto
Platinum Digital on overheads is the one that surprises people. It's transparent enough that you're shaping rather than coloring, and the overheads are usually the most honest picture of the kit you have.
Other things in there that are maybe less obvious:
- Why the kick and bass should never hit a reverb bus. They ground the low end, and reverb makes the whole mix float.
- Why your left and right rhythm guitars should NOT have identical EQ curves. Hats sit on one side, so you darken the opposite guitar to avoid the fight and get a wider image.
- The two-stage vocal chain (Studio FET into Vintage Opto) with reduction targets for each stage.
- Auto gain off on every compressor, no exceptions.
I also put in a master bus chain and a limiter config, but honestly the mix should be right before it gets there.
I created a whole guide on this topic. It's $19, which is less than an hour of studio time. Not going to pretend it's for everyone: it's punk and alt-rock specific, it assumes you can already place a plugin, and it's a guide rather than a template file you drag in, which is deliberate.
Happy to answer anything about the settings in the comments, whether or not you're interested in buying it. But if you are, send a dm and I'll give you the link
