Sticky Weekly Open Forum

Use this weekly post to discuss anything you want (within reason). The rules here are relaxed. Some things you may chat about here that are not allowed in regular posts:

  • non-Korea related topics
  • looking for friends
  • language exchange opportunities
  • event advertising
  • casual meetups (not hookups)
  • chance me (I want to study in Korea)
  • and more....

Some rules are still in place. The main one is 'be kind'. Also, no contribution should involve anything that includes an exchange of money, unless it is a professionally organized event (parties, cultural activities, etc.) Lastly, no polling, surveying, or research.

Have fun.

Announcement BEWARE OF REAL ESTATE SCAMMERS ON THIS SUBREDDIT

Good afternoon everyone.

Over the past week or so, the mod team here at Living_in_Korea has been conducting an investigation into reports we received related to real estate/rental scams on this subreddit. It was brought to our attention that users were receiving direct messages from "real estate agents" after posting that they were looking for accommodations.

As a result, we verified that they were, in fact, receiving direct messages with varying information. Sometimes they were offered accommodations with prices that were too good to be true. Other times scammers requested application fees or holding deposits after providing links to accommodations that were supposedly for rent. Also, some were offering to introduce "friends" who are real estate agents and provide translation services.

We have banned all of the accounts we could, but that is only possible if the user has ever posted to this subreddit. Other accounts we blacklisted, but the OP might still receive/see the reply. In addition, we have banned any accounts that look suspicious or are thought to be affiliated with a real estate agent (legitimate or not) - those that provide an unusual amount of real estate related recommendations, legal advice, AI generated content, etc., as well as those who recommend specific real estate agents using new accounts or existing accounts with little or no other Reddit activity.

In total we banned more than a dozen accounts. However, that does not keep the scammers from contacting users directly through DMs. This is where you come in. We need your help in combating this problem and shutting down these crooks before they can pray on any more of our subreddit members. So, if this happens to you, please use the report button.

REMEMBER: NEVER TRUST ANYONE WHO IS OFFERING YOU SOMETHING THROUGH REDDIT DMs. THEY ARE NOT TRYING TO HELP YOU. NORMAL REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS ARE NOT DONE THIS WAY IN KOREA. REPORT THEM (Report flag > Spam > Unsolicited chat or private messaging), AND THEN IGNORE THEM.

- The LiK Mod Team

P.S. Before you ask, I wish we could provide their usernames to you, but that is a direct violation of Reddit's user agreement, and we have no desire to have our accounts actioned.

Friendships and Relationships Do you change your shoes after getting to work?

Post image
63 Upvotes

I'm curious if people in other countries do this, too.

Personally, I always change into indoor shoes after arriving at work because wearing the shoes all day makes my feet feel sweaty and uncomfortable.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever really noticed anyone having smelly feet, so it's not even about that. I just like giving my feet a little breathing room lol.

Is changing shoes at work common in your country, or do most people just wear the same shoes all day?

Friendships and Relationships One cultural difference I noticed after moving to the US

Post image
367 Upvotes

One thing I didn’t realize was a cultural difference until I visited the US: brushing your teeth in the restroom after lunch.

In Korea, it’s pretty normal to bring a toothbrush to work or school and brush your teeth right after lunch. I honestly never thought twice about it.

But after going to the US, I realized that most people don’t seem to do this, at least in the places I visited.

Now I’m curious: Do you guys usually brush your teeth after lunch, or do you just wait until you get home?

Shopping Where can I buy size US 10 women’s shoes?

Does Seoul have any cute shoe places for ladies with bigger feet? There has to be right?

So I am a tall gal at 5’9, which means I have big feet! All the cute shoe stores I see only go up to size US 8. Please help with any recommendations for shoes that go up to my size if there are any!

And would prefer recommendations for cute women’s shoes, not Men’s sneakers that I could wear. I want like Rockfish type or something cute!

News and Discussion I’m very confused about the new Climate Card

i’m very confused about the roll out and they seem to be leaving a lot of things unclear ㅠㅠ

1) can you recharge it regularly with cash at stations like it used to be?

from what I can tell everyone is saying no and that you have to do online or through app, but in that case what about people visiting? my family has stopped by and they all used a climate card to travel while they were here for 3 weeks and it was great! now what though? ㅠㅠ

2) refund or flat rate?

i read somewhere that if its more than 62k per month you get charged 62k, but then is it just charging you once or refunding you who knows when later? honestly pretty inconvenient since I don’t keep money or get paid on my korean card and from what I’ve read here too is that they don’t take any foreign cards? is there any work around this?

3) “smart” travel calculations

this is the most confusing thing to me and I think to do with the ai and “smart” feature craze nowadays-does this imo useless feature affect anything?? does it automatically apply the discounts or something I’m so confused and reading the website didnt help at all…

not to sound rude or anything but I hate this new rollout, it used to be much simpler and easier especially as someone who mainly uses their canadian card-wish they didnt change anything ㅠㅠ

Home Life moving out

So basically I thought I have to tell that I want to move out one month before the contract ends. BUT it was supposed to be TWO months before, so my contract is automatically renewed. Will I still be able to move out? I am in the process of begging them lol.

Real Estate and Relocation Living in Hongje 홍제

I was looking around for experiences of foreigners who lived in Hongje and couldn’t find any. My boss suggested I move to this neighborhood for my job at Yonsei.

Does anyone have experience living here? Maybe there are less foreigners, so it will be more challenging than Hongdae because I don’t speak Korean? I’m in my late 20s if that matters.

Visas and Licenses Can a Korean-NZ’er who recently renounced their Korean citizenship get a H-1 Working holiday visa?

Hi all,

As I haven’t complete my mandatory military service I know I am not eligible for the f-4 visa.

I plan to take a short break from my career to go travelling which will see me staying in Korea for bulk of this time (3mths but still planning)

Would I be eligible to apply for an H-1 working holiday visa?

Thanks

Hobbies and Gaming Looking for recommendations of PC Bang to play FF7 Rebirth (160GB Steam game)

Hello, I am staying in Korea for 6 months and I was looking for a PC bang/cafe to finish up FF7 Rebirth.

The game weights 160GB and takes a strong hardware to run it with less stutters, so I was looking for a more premium place where I could download it. However, I looked that in PC bangs you oftenly do not much space to download games, so I would like to if there are any recommended places for this type of experience.

Additionally, is it safe to log in and download games from Steam on a PC bang? I have seen some comments about people getting their accounts hacked, but I imagine that people regularly login into their Riot Games account to play games anyway.

Home Life Leaving Korea - Throwing away big items

I'm finishing up my contract in February, so I'm starting to get rid of items in my house. I have a sofa that needs to be dismantled before I can throw it away or sell it, but I have no clue how to do it. Does anyone know of any services?

I was also told by my landlady that I have to get rid of a massive island cabinet that belonged to the previous tenant; however, every time I look at it, I genuinely don't understand how they got it into the apartment because it's so heavy and bulky. Again, if anyone knows of any services I can use, that would be great.

I guess any other helpful tips would be greatly appreciated!

News and Discussion Taxi Drivers

I’ve been living in Korea for a long time, but I’ve always wondered how some taxi drivers here were able to get licensed. I’m referring to the ones who constantlyyyy break while driving.

Was this an older method of driving back in the day?

Why is it a driving habit for so many??

Especially when it makes for an extremely uncomfortable riding experience and an open welcome to Mr.motion sickness 🤢
I cross my fingers and toes on days I’m wearing a hairclip that I don’t get graced with one of those drivers. 💀

Tis my little curiosity rant. Any thoughts?

Food and Dining First time visiting Seoul! Looking for Hanwoo steak, gaming cafés, and other recommendations 🇰🇷

Hey everyone! I live in Pyeongtaek and I'm planning to spend Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning in Seoul. It'll be my first time actually exploring the city, so I'm looking for recommendations from people who know the area!

One thing I really want to try is some good Hanwoo steak. If I'm going to try it for the first time, I want to make it count. I'm also thinking about checking out a gaming café while I'm there, preferably somewhere with a good setup and a fun atmosphere.

Other than that, I'm pretty open to anything! Cool places to walk around, good food spots, gaming or tech-related places, interesting neighborhoods, or anything you think is worth checking out for someone visiting for the first time.

I'm only there for a couple of days, so I'd love to hear what you guys think is worth the time. Bonus points if you have specific restaurant or gaming café recommendations!

Thanks in advance!

Services and Technology Unpaid internet bill

Hello guys, I have an unpaid internet bill worth 90,000 won. Last year, i keep asking the guy who installed my wifi to discontinue the service since I'm not using it and I have unlimited data plan on my phone. He keeps ignoring me so I decided to unplug the router and not pay for 3 months. Now after 5 months they are asking me to pay 900,000 won. Do I really need to pay this much? I can't afford it since I'm broke. I'm willing to pay the 90k won but not the 900k.

Education Thesis advisor issue

I've seen other posts similar to this so I'm assuming I'm not the only one.

I've been with my thesis advisor for about a year and could not even settle on a topic because she constantly refuses it (I brought her 9 10 pages topic proposals). I have been belittled and ridiculed by her but the last meeting was the worst one. I'm on 4th semester and needed two additional semesters for my thesis due to her not letting me do my proposal. It has gotten to the point where I am now looking at transferring uni even if that means taking classes for a year as well as writing thesis.

I know it's 2nd round of admission right now and I have lined up a few interesting universities that I wanted to apply to. I also found the teacher I would like to work to on my thesis for each of them.

At this point it is not a safe environment with her because it's borderline bullying and I do not want to take it to the academic office in case I fail to transfer and I'm stuck at this uni until my thesis is done. I've also considered changing supervisors but my department is small and they all know each other.

My visa is until march 31st so I have a bit of time to figure things out even if that means abandoning my master and go straight to work.

Does anyone know the best course of action?

Has anyone transferred from one grad school to another? Is the process difficult or is it doable to be accepted?

How do people deal with supervisor issues

Education Gks-U passer. What happens if I fail to get topik 3?

Hello! I’m a GKS-U recipient, currently holding TOPIK Level 1. I’m taking the TOPIK II October and November PBT and IBT, but I’m worried I won’t reach Level 3. I know basic/beginner grammar expressions and vocabulary. Will my scholarship be immediately canceled if I fail to obtain TOPIK Level 3 by the deadline? (Some said it wont be guaranteed getting the 6months request extension) If so, what happens afterward? Would I have to return to my home country? Has anyone experienced this situation or personally known a GKS-U scholar who failed to meet the TOPIK requirement and had to discontinue their scholarship? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thank you!

Banking and Finance Can someone explain the K-PASS

I got mine in September. I think I registered it correctly online, however when I was scanning mine on the bus last month, the amount was already over 60k. On October 1st only 21,400KRW got deducted from my account. I’m not sure if that’s the amount from my K pass because it doesn’t say what it is for, but it’s the first time and the only amount that is taking automatically from my account.

I already thought the amount was so low because I saw I was using more than 60k, but now I also got a 38,000krw cashback in my account? Did I do everything correct? Did I actually pay what I had to pay for? And why did I get more cash back than what I paid?

Visas and Licenses D-10-1 Job Searching Visa Extension (Can I apply online)?

I read online that it is possible to apply for a D-10 extension online.

Has anyone done this?

First time I applied for D-10, I did it in person.

Since this is my first time extended (Hoping for 6mo or 1 year. Limit is 1 year bc I was E-2)

Also since I applied already do I need to show housing proof even though I already showed housing papers when I first filed for D-10?

Services and Technology Anyone Know an English-Friendly Upholstery Business

Hi! So I tried searching the sub to see if this question was asked before but only found one post without a definitive recommendation from awhile ago. I was wondering if anyone knew of an upholster in Seoul (or Incheon) that can speak English. I've tried calling several places around but have not had any luck and my Korean is so poor I can't survive without google translate...

Any help would be greatly appreciated! 👏

We're looking to totally remodel the downstairs, add stairs, kitchen, renovate 3 bathrooms, and some small works upstairs (wallpaper etc.) Has anyone done a big remodel and can let me know the rough cost? What was the process like? Also what were the things that cost the most?
Our house is about 50평 totally.
Our budget is max 1억, so any tips to be cost-effective are welcome
Thanks for any insight!

Friendships and Relationships women my age here are so evil

the korean girls i’ve met in my grad school lab here are the worst i’ve seen since my middle school. i’m a girl too, and i wanted to be friends with both of the girls SO BAD and tried to get closer to them, instead they ruined my friendships with the men in the lab that i was already good friends with. and now they’re all still friendly with each other and im just there overhearing them and dealing with being lonely

one of them literally admitted she was jealous of me and asked one of them to exclude me. the other one straight up ignores me and tells him all her problems or has random chats and giggles with him while i’m sitting in the lab near enough to over hear . we used to be a friend group but they managed to break it up so eloquently. once i was out of the picture, the girls stoped talking to me too.

im not generalising, just shocked at how these women act in their late 20s. i’m sure not all korean women are like that
