The restraints were comfortable.
That was Lauren's first cruelty.
She had made certain Asher could remain exactly where she wanted him, perfectly secure, perfectly helpless, with nothing to distract him from her presence.
She knelt beside his chest, close enough that he could feel the mattress shift beneath her weight.
"Look at you," she whispered. "So wonderfully patient."
Asher turned toward her voice.
Lauren laughed softly.
"Oh, sweetheart. You know better than that."
She leaned closer, letting him believe, just for a moment, that she might grant him the affection he'd been waiting for.
Then she withdrew.
"You've spent all evening hoping I'll give you what you want."
"Yes, Lauren."
"And I've spent all evening deciding that I won't."
Her smile was audible.
A quiet mechanical hum interrupted the silence.
Asher recognized it immediately.
Lauren watched the realization cross his face.
"Something wrong, darling?"
"No, Lauren."
"Good. Because tonight, you're going to learn something about patience."
The mattress shifted again.
He could hear her breathing, growing slower, more deliberate.
Every instinct told him to move closer, but the restraints held him exactly where she'd placed him.
"Eyes on me," she commanded.
He obeyed.
For a while, she allowed that much.
Then, just when her breathing began to change, Lauren reached for the folded silk lying beside her.
"Oh, no," Asher murmured.
"Oh, yes."
She slipped the blindfold over his eyes, carefully adjusting it until the last trace of light disappeared.
"There," she whispered. "Much better."
The darkness seemed to magnify everything.
The rustle of sheets.
The hum.
Her breathing.
Most of all, her voice.
"You don't need to see everything, Asher. Sometimes I think you forget that."
He swallowed.
"Lauren?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Please."
She gave a delighted little laugh.
"Such a beautiful word. And tonight, so completely useless."
He heard her settle beside him.
For several long moments, she said nothing.
Then she leaned toward his ear.
"Do you know what my favorite part of this is?"
"No, Lauren."
"Knowing that you're listening to every little sound, wondering whether I'll finally take pity on you."
"Will you?"
"No."
One small word.
Perfectly delivered.
She brushed a hand through his hair.
"You're going to stay right there. You're going to be patient. And when I decide we're finished, you're going to thank me."
The room fell quiet again.
Asher waited.
And waited.
Finally, the mechanical hum stopped.
Lauren exhaled, then shifted closer.
A moment later, he felt her lips against his forehead.
"There. All done."
His breath caught.
"May I take the blindfold off?"
"Not yet."
She let the silence stretch.
"Wasn't that lovely, sweetheart?"
"Yes, Lauren."
"And did you get everything you wanted?"
"No, Lauren."
"Of course you didn't."
Her laughter was quiet and affectionate.
"That was never the arrangement."
She finally removed the blindfold.
Her expression was warm, satisfied, and entirely unapologetic.
Asher looked up at her.
Lauren smiled.
"Now, what do you say?"
He sighed.
"Thank you, Lauren."
She kissed his forehead once more.
"Good boy."
And only then did she reach for the restraints.
