Blink and you might miss the new big thing Xbox is doing! Last week, it was XP. This is the home to Xbox's Products, Places, Partnerships, and Productions. Basically, where everything that is beyond the "box" goes. Sure, fine, that's a lot to talk about on its own. However, a wave of recomps, games running on browsers, and AI powered mods have led to yet another initiative to be stood up rather quickly. This time, it's Xbox Labs, and Xbox aims to take hold of the emerging "creator" space where they will sell new products. If that wasn't enough, a new survey leaked online and tells us that Xbox is looking at making literally everything exclusive outside of Call Of Duty. So, the Dukes heads are spinning to say the least. Let's chat through it all as we always do in what has become an incredibly unpredictable time for all of gaming.

October is here, and Halloween is just a few weeks away. In an unusually busy year of new releases, I (Dustin) still find it irresistible to dive into some spooky favorites. So that's the idea for this episode! I asked the King of horror (at least to me), Jimmy Champane, and the irresistible Lockmort to join me in making the 100% factual, definitive, perfect list of Halloween games. Enjoy!

A common complaint during the PlayStation 5 generation has been that the core fanbase has is being ignored. There's obvious truth to this statement, as Sony pivots more and more towards the free-to-play and games-as-a-service audiences that now sustain the brand. But perhaps they're still listening, after all. Recent rumors indicate a new Ape Escape is in development at an external second party team, joining People Can Fly's alleged Killzone project as yet another look backwards into PlayStation's extensive well of dormant IP. The real question now is: What else would we want to see? We discuss. Plus: Sony sells hundreds of PSVR-related patents to Meta, a new Portal model with an OLED screen may be incoming, Forza Horizon 6 gets a PS5 release date, Warhorse's CEO thinks games should obviously cost more, Alan Wake 3 may be early in development at Remedy, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is 'hybrid gaming' the future of the industry? How do we deal with latent DLC for games we're no longer familiar with? Should Sacred Symbols be focused on attracting more female listeners? Which host has earned the title of Emeritus?

The aggression of Asha Sharma and Xbox's new leadership group continues on! In a leaked town hall, we learned of many of Xbox's plans for the future including a "family" of devices for Helix, incoming changes to Game Pass, and the streamlining to how games reach the platform. One of the more noteworthy comments was Asha's insistence that Xbox has not "earned the right" to avert their gaze beyond the console platform. This is something clearly in staunch opposition to what the prior leadership team stood for as they explored everything from gaming through TV apps to the Cloud. With the focus on the current generation of consoles, what does this mean for games even in the 2030s? The Dukes think you should get very cozy with the idea of still playing games on these devices even up to a decade from now.

With word that Sacred Symbols will soon embark on a new era, it's time that things across the company also get reassessed.
Punching Up, while a fun conversationalist show, continues to be less and less about Nintendo and its games and more and more about everything else, most of it not related to gaming. Meanwhile, Sacred Symbols + is losing a bit of steam, particularly in regard to spoilercasts and review discussions.
To date, we still do not have an episode for Tokon: Fighting Souls, a game that three people in the company were more than happy to take codes for. It's also one of the few PS console exclusives this year. I fail to believe that Vince continues to have such drastic internet issues that prevent recording. We're also unlikely to get a discussion for Onimusha, one of the games that was highlighted as being a big deal for everyone. Control Resonant might also end up on the backburner.
Finally, there's a distinct lack of through line through this whole endeavor that was apparent once Constellation ended and even more now. It feels like all of the products exist in their own silos and not part of a network.

As a Sacred Symbols listener, not much in this article comes as a surprise. Colin has been beating this drum for years. I really want Xbox to come back, but this read is too optimistic in my opinion. Rebuilding when you’re THIS down should demonstrate some initial gains. The question is, can it be sustained for several years?
I hope Colin can get Cordin on for a Sacred+ soon.

Word on the street is that Sony is taking pitches on its dormant, fan-favourite franchises, and among those is the supposed revival of a proper old school classic: Ape Escape.
Well, the rumour mill has continued turning over, and there's now a thin, but very plausible, fan theory about which team is bringing back those mischievous pipo monkeys.
The first thought was always Team Asobi, which would be a fantastic first-party fit for the platformer series.
If you're unfamiliar with this team, its senior staff are known for having worked on Sonic Mania, the beloved classic Sonic revival from 2017.
As Evening Star, though, the team has only released one game: Penny's Big Breakaway, a 3D platformer with unique controls, charming stylised visuals, and cutesy enemies that can appear in large numbers. Sound at all familiar?
In the above post (translated via X), Reddit user IcyPenguin28 claims to have heard from "a couple credible sources" that Evening Star is behind the Ape Escape revival.
Apparently, Hunter Bridges, CTO and game director on Penny's Big Breakaway, is a fan of the series.
It runs slightly deeper than that. u/AsobiAr has also unearthed a job advertisement for the studio when they were hiring a 3D character artist "with proven experience modeling, rigging, and animating anime-styled characters."
On top of that, Evening Star's CEO and executive producer Dave Padilla relocated to Tokyo in 2025, around the same time the studio began hiring.
