LEGO Ideas Katy- The Caboose Who Got Loose

I'd like to show off, Katy Caboose, an old MOC of mine, and more recently an IDEAS entry. She has one more month left on IDEAS so I thought I'd share now, before she's gone off rotation.

https://ideas.lego.com/product-ideas/d4dbb53e-2343-44cb-85bd-da0ef06e260e

In 1952 Walt Disney Animator Bill Peet wrote the story and sketched the characters for the animated short cartoon, "Susie the Little Blue Coupe." Flash forward to 2006, the style of the automotive vehicles in Pixar's Cars movie were inspired by the Susie short. In between, Bill Peet worked on many other Disney films but eventually left the studio in 1964. Along the way, he started writing and illustrating children's books, including, "The Caboose Who Got Loose," which was published in 1971. The title character is Katy Caboose, who does not like spending her life at the end of a train and she is frightened by the high trestles and long tunnels she has to travel through in her life as a caboose. The book opens with the lines,

"When Katy caboose rambled down the train tracks, the engines were steamers with puffing smokestacks. She was a caboose who disliked being last"

While the rhyming could give Dr. Seuss a run for his money, the pictures were just as amazing. Any inanimate object could show subtle human expressions through Peet's anthropomorphic magic. His time at Disney turned him into a wizard.

Here's my take on Katy, where I tried my best to capture some of Peet's magic: you'll see as your view changes that the thin black line of her mouth goes from being a "happy caboose" to showing her fear of the trestles and tunnels ahead.

If you like this IDEA please support it and share it with your friends. Thank you so much.

Diesel BR Class 03 with wagons

I originally had my BR Class 03 MOC in green, but I rebuilt recently to be closer to the proportions of the actual Class 03 and changed the colour to dark/earth blue, which kind of looks better.

Also built some wagons for it with loads in, I’ve had the wagon design for a while but only recently designed the loads that go in them, but now I have a proper train consist. 😄

Question Do You Use Both 9V and Powered Up Tracks?

Just wondering, do you guys keep both types of tracks on hand? I have a good amount of both 9V and regular tracks, and it seems a bit redundant to maintain both systems. However, 9V doesn’t have the double crossover, while regular tracks don’t have the crossing. I’m curious how others handle this.

I don’t use any third party items. I’m not against it, specially the wider curbs. I just don’t have the funds to spend on other systems.

Model Info:

  • Parts:
    • Locomotive = 769 parts
    • Passenger Car = 460 parts
    • Freight Car = 224 parts
    • Couplers = 28 parts
    • Total = 1481 parts
  • Length:
    • Locomotive = 37.6 studs
    • Passenger Car = 27.6 studs
    • Freight Car =27.6 studs
    • Total = 98.6 studs
  • Width: Mostly 10 studs, 11 studs @ handrails, 11.2 studs @ footsteps
  • Height: 16.2 studs rail to chimney, 16.6 studs overall
  • Wheels:
    • 6x 30.4mm/Size L/#9
    • 4x Standard Train Wheels
  • Power: 1 L-Motor, 1 Hub

I made one of these a long time ago (seen in the last picture) but I became unsatisfied with how it looked. So I made a new one, bigger and more detailed, with more faithful references to the original game model such as the single axle under the cannon, gold metalwork, and curved sides of the cars.

Layout MOD - Tram with Summer Trailer, Motorised. [60506 x2]

The first time I saw this set I knew I had to pick up two of them so I could build this version.

My goal was also to motorise the model whilst concealing the PoweredUp components much as possible. I was unsure if the motorisation method would be practical but I'm pretty pleased with the end result.

As you can see from the following video, I wasn't able to make it capable of taking S-curves.

https://youtu.be/Hrkp4ARV1Uo

It can successfully negotiate points, but only if you put a straight either side of the wiggly bit. I've had it running for a few months now and it's proven very reliable as long as it's given a compatible layout.

I could have posted earlier, but once I'd built the tram I had to make an expanded beach and tram stop, and it just grew from there. It took me a few PAB trips to get enough water.

It would be great to have your feedback, and I'd be happy to answer any questions about the build.

(edit: new link to fixed video)

:-)

MOC British Rail Class 42 "Warship" (MOC)

I present to you my Class 42 MOC

The Class 42 "Warship" was a Diesel-Hydraulic loco based off the West German V 200, used by British Rail between 1958 and 1972. It was mainly used in the Western Region and aimed to replace steam, mainly being used for passenger trains but also freight (i think). It used 2 Maybach V12 (i think) engines coupled to hydraulic transmissions. I've modelled one engine in this model, but couldn't fit the other one in because of the placement of the IR receiver.

This model is in 6 wide and I tried to keep a simple more Lego set like appearance. The completely exposed bogies might look a bit odd but I think you can understand once you see the ones on the real train. It uses power functions and has two train motors in the pictures, although you could easily swap one out for a dummy, or replace it with Powered Up or 9V motors (which I think would look great) and that way you could probably fit the second fake engine in. It also has a cab at each end that can fit a minifigure, as well as roofs over the cabs and one main roof covering the battery box and fake engine (see slide 4).

I designed the model in this reddish brown colour but I've also made recolours in dark green and dark blue as seen on the last slide. The recoloured versions are slightly modified to negate expensive or unavailable parts but might be worse built than the red version. I also made each colour with full yellow ends and partial yellow ends as both versions existed.

The Studio file is available on this Bricklink gallery page, the file will be on the post if the moderators allow it (might take a few days) or if not it will be in the comment section: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/studio/design.page?idModel=873668

Hope you like it!

Hey everyone, I'm so appreciative of those who voted for the Caboose Café; I wanted to show it one final time before wave 1 closes tomorrow with the vintage steam train set. If you're looking to add a caboose to your steam train, this café is built to be additional rolling stock to fit any city-scale train sets! If you like to comment on and vote for the Caboose Café that would really mean a lot to me!

Question Best way to motorize?

I am new to this, what would be the best way to motorize the #60511 Lego vintage steam train without using your phone to control it? Wanting to purchase all components needed as a gift, but I don’t know what all components are needed. This would be the first Lego train for the recipient and they are too young for a phone.

Some of the official LEGO powered up components on their website have bad reviews. Is this secondary source a legit alternative? https://www.zenebricks.com/products/power-functions-kit-for-lego-vintage-steam-train-60511

Please help and tell me what to purchase so it is ready to gift and build! Thank you!

The switcher now fits a PU hub. The containerwagon is 40 studs long, ready to fit 4 6X10 containers, 2 6x20 containers, or 1 6x40 container, plus they can be double stacked. The wagon can also be modified to fit the standard Modular LEGO® Intermodal Standard.

Lego Train Motor 88011

Is it bad for the motor to use these without the power functions attached? I got a second copy of the arctic train so I could have a hub for my other trains and ended up building the locomotive on the other side. Was wondering by if it would cause problems run the train on the one side.

Question Problems motorising Lego Holiday Express

I have been trying to motorise Lego Holiday express(10361) but the powered up parts are unavailable in my country (88009, 88011, 88010).

I have looked at some alternatives in amazon and found a motor which is a replica of 88002 and a battery box which is a replica of 88000. Will these two work with the holiday express? I just want the train to be motorised, no fancy controls needed.

Hey everyone!

Here are the four train sets I created for the BDP Wave 1 competition! I had a lot of fun putting these together, and I’d love to hear what you think!

If any of these sets catch your eye, I’d really appreciate it if you’d consider leaving a comment on the submission. Every bit of feedback and conversation helps give these builds more visibility, and it would mean a lot to have your support!

Thanks so much to everyone who takes the time to check them out! Here's the link: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/2028-wave-1/main.page?page=1&s=jonoghost

Hey all! I have already introduced my Lisbon Tram model here, and now I’ve built a square around it. It features many new details, such as a tunnel portal with a lookout spot above it and a snack shop next to it.

You can support this model following the link and click on “😍 Love it!”:

https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/2028-wave-1/5335/Lisbon-Tram-Square

My original and smaller build featuring the same vehicles can still be found here https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/2028-wave-1/5336/Lisbon-Tram-Ride

What caught your eye first? Tell me what you like about this build.

Thanks in advance! 🤝
