Unusual items used for in the kitchen

Over the weekend I was going through a box of random stuff I’ve had for years working to get rid of unnecessary stuff. In the box I came across a small box of borosilicate ‘watch glasses’ I never knew what to do with or even how I ended up with them. I finally figured out I could use them to keep Chiles submerged when soaking them. Worked perfectly and being able to toss them into the dishwasher was a bonus.

What unusual items have you found a niche use for when cooking?

Glass Tupperware or what?

Does anyone have non-more plastic Tupperware they love? Trying to move away from plastic but want something stackable! Also the lids need to be easy on/off. I feel like the ones with the clips have to be lined up exactly to fit and I don’t want to deal with it day in and out. I looked at Misen ware but it’s like $200 for four. Does anyone have stackable, easy lids, Tupperware that’s not plastic you like?

Storing Wittmers PB stirrers?

I have 3 or 4 different sizes of those Grandpa Wittmer’s nut butter stirrers. They work really well and I like them a lot. Currently I have them hanging on a magnet strip on the kitchen wall, but I need more room for knives and would like to move them. Does anyone have any clever storage tips for storing these weirdly-shaped, bulky things? I used to keep them in a drawer but they take up a LOT of space and also make the drawer get stuck pretty often, which is super annoying.

I’ve never used it before. You pull a string and it chopped up stuff. What is it good at chopping up? Tnx!

Small things that made my kitchen better

Hi! Since I love cooking and spend quite a lot of my time in the kitchen, I always try to make it more convenient. Here are some things I did that work for me:

  • Put all my spices in a drawer instead of a cupboard. Just pull it and see which jar you need to take, add labels of course! I used to keep the jars stacked in a cupboard and it was a pain to take out what I needed.
  • Installed a faucet drain rack -- instead of keeping the sponges and rags around the sink, they're now in the rack inside the sink, they dry better and don't annoy me with their presence on the counter lol
  • Got a plastic wrap dispenser & cutter (which I also use for baking paper and foil). It's way more convenient than having to use scissors.
  • First, sorted everything into containers and then got spinning platforms for them. Nothing tumbles, nothing gets stuck, easier to reach for whatever I need.

These are just some small things that made a huge difference for me. I've got most of these things from the kitchen section at celestralle, but I'm sure most of your local stores will have something like this too.

Champion juicer alternative

If anyone remembers these they had the ability to "masticate" for lack of a better word ingredients. Rather than juice you could put in a solid plate and it would leave the moisture in the food but puree it similar to a mill but it didn't remove skins or anything.

Does anyone know of a substitute tool for that purpose?

Knife reacted bad in the dishwasher—food safe??

Bought this cute cheese knife for my bestie, a charcuterie fanatic. Put it in the dishwasher to make sure it had no bacteria or nothing, and it kinda “melted”? Turned dark in the washer with black water dripping off it. My mom cleaned it with Bar Keeper’s friend but it has these spots and a weird scent. How did i go so wrong, and is this food safe at all? How can i spot silverware like this in the future so this doesnt happen again? Sorry i dont know what sub is right for this but I really wanna learn

Edit: thanks for the replies!! I scrubbed reaaaal hard with bar keeper’s friend and the rat no longer carries the plague! Hopefully ill better spot aluminum in the future

Kitchen Tool

I am trying to be healthier and taking chopped/sliced veggies to work.

My Mandoline is 20+yrs old and need a new one. Suggestions on a V-blade or angle blade?

I found one on amazon for $20-ish; the only reason I’m considering is for the waffle fries😂. I don’t need top-o-the-line.
