Restaurant: Here's our carefully developed, well thought out menu
Customer: I would like this dish with the following 17 substitutions.
Restaurant: Uhm, ok, the customer's always right...
Customer: this is awful!
Restaurant: I'm sorry.
... That's the end, no funny or humourous ending. This happens every day at every restaurant, ever.

I once got a really awful burger order. It was medium rare, extra cheese, grilled onions, grilled jalapeños, grilled mushrooms, mayo. Cool. So good so far - I can't do medium rare burger meat myself and I'm not into mayo on a burger, but I can cook the fuck out of that order.
Then I saw the note: no bun, chop burger and use wrap. I told the waitress to ask them if they're sure and it's probably going to be a mess with the undercooked beef juices and all that other shit. Yup, they got pissed that she even asked. Felt bad for the waitress, but I was right.
That thing was a bloody mess of cheese and mayo and wet cooked vegetables. He did eat it all, to my suprise. 1 star review "tasted OK, but the wrap was wet and gross" - yeah, fucker, I bet it was. That was like 12 years ago and I still think about it.

If one more fucking person slides their phone at me and makes me read a GPT-generated cocktail recipe instead of ordering something off of my fucking 30-drink cocktail menu I'm gonna punch them in the neck

I always stick to classics when I'm at the bar; whiskey sour, Cosmo, Long Island, etc.
Experimentation is for home.

You need to have the local bottle-O's webpage open on your phone that you can unlock and slide over to them in response to their phone slide.

Am I allowed to order my whiskey ginger made with bitters and soda instead of ginger beer?
•

Best restaurant I ever worked at, we didn’t do substitutions except for certain dishes where certain allergens were in play. We even had some dishes where there were protein variations for different religions. But we weren’t taking things out, making pan sauces differently, I fucking loved it.

I received a 2 star at a brand new restaurant I was managing.
"Service was great, drinks were incredible, and the food was good. Unfortunately the parking lot wasn't well lit and didn't feel very safe, I cannot give them more than 2 stars as a result."
•
u/SlightDish31 15+ Years 9h ago
Even better if it was a parking lot further away from your restaurant that was 5 dollars cheaper than your actual parking lot.
•
u/Alternative_Swan_497 9h ago
Our parking lot was tiny, free, and the overhead lighting came from street lamps that were maintained by the city.

This makes me wanna downvote you out of spite of that shit comment holy fuck people are the worst. And it gets even worse in a corporate setting as they ACTUALLY believe the customer is always right. Like no... they arent. They may be right in what they want withing reason. But it doesnt mean they're right when you only have sandwiches and they ask for fucking soup. (As an example)

Owned a bbq joint, 1st three months of operation. Upscale, scratch, mostly-locally sourced, etc. customer wants mayonnaise with their brisket sandwich. I don’t carry mayonnaise. So, in this open kitchen where dude could clearly see me, I bust out a robot coupe, eggs lemon oil, and make the motherfucker some mayonnaise from scratch. Don’t have any need for it so at the end of his meal he gets a deli half-pint of handmade mayo to go.
1 star: had to wait five minutes for a cup of mayonnaise
•
u/wherearemyballs9 9h ago
Who the FUCK asks for mayo at a bbq place?
•
u/Bedley_smutler69 8h ago
The asshole who gets it made by hand for him by the chef-owner then bitches that it took too long

Moral of the story: "Sorry, we don't have any mayonnaise, but we do have these great sauces." is perfectly acceptable. you still get 1 star, but this way you didn't fuck around with making it by hand for an ungrateful shitheel.

I got a 1 star review, I was FOH at hole in the wall sushi place. She walked in and said she was gluten free, vegan, no white rice and hungry. I was a 20 year old working a cash job. We actually made her a custom roll, off the menu because neither me nor the only line chef on duty knew wtf gluten was at the time (15 years ago). She gave us 1 star because the food was slow.
Edit: we did google it and ended up giving her a spring roll type thing with veg because we literally didn’t have brown rice.

I like to look up the other places they give bad reviews of. Had one lady give us one star on yelp because we didn’t offer an item she wanted, then saw she also gave a grocery outlet a bad review for the lack of specialty fruit….like what do you even say to people with that astounding combination of entitlement and stupidity?….

Got an order. Slip said, "Fries well done". In my mind I thought, don't tell me how to cook food you have no idea how it's cooked. So I made them well done. Manager got a complaint from that customer their French fries were burnt and they wanted a refund for the whole order including everything other then fries. I showed the manager the slip and she told the customer to take a hike. It's nice when employers have their employees backs over shitty over entitled customers.

I put in a large order for takeout but they told me they didn't have my order! After arguing with the worker for about 10 minutes and telling them what I ordered, I was told that they didn't make a few things that I wanted but [competing restaurant] across town did. They could have just made me what I wanted but I had to go to [competing restaurant] across town to pick up my order which, by the way, was cold!
- 1 star
Review left by a local who lived in that town their entire life

"We don't do substitutions." "What?! I'm giving you a 1 star review!"
Damned if you do damned if you don't.
•
u/Insert_creative 7h ago
I’m guessing this person worded it exactly how their review states, which is confusing as hell. I bet they wanted a bagel. Also cream cheese on sourdough. The drink situation baffles me though.

Customer is an idiot, but it didn’t occur to homeboy to ask any clarifying questions when they ordered non-existent items?

The customer is always right IN MATTERS OF TASTE.
The second half of the original modern quote is seldom mentioned and the prior half is kept to influence employees to confirm.

A cafe is pretty low stakes. There are basically ten things you have to do more or less competently. There are review fuckheads who are always gonna trot this out. It’s also really obvious it’s a fuckhead review because it’s an easily rectified mistake if the customer brings it up at the time.
If I review a restaurant it comes from a place of betrayal. I know exactly what you did to your watery birria you charged me tourist money for. I’m coming after you and your wet leather birria. That’s gonna leave a mark.

My proudest 1 star was at a pizza place in Detroit I worked at.
"White girl wouldn't put skrimps on my pizza. Fucking bitch move"
Sir, we don't have skrimps or shrimp
