Feeling guilty about choice of major

Hey guys. I recently graduated with B.S. Kinesiology (with an emphasis on coursework pertaining to pre-med/pre-health professions) and minored in chemistry. I got certified as an ACSM-EP, soon looking towards NSCA-CSCS. I came here to post some troubling thoughts I've been having.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the education I obtained and want to feel proud of it, I can't help to feel guilty that I should have studied something more applicable to what the job market demands. Yes, Kinesiology is a very broad topic and can be applied to any advanced education and occupation, but on it's own I understand the job prospects can be quite challenging. I chose this major at the ripe age of 18 y/o without much experience being in the real world or working yet.

I had an excellent time at college and made the most of the experience with connections and extracurriculars. The degree was entirely paid for and I have no debt. But, because of the nature of the degree, I feel as if my free ticket to an education and a middle class life and beyond could have been well-spent elsewhere (nursing, engineering, SWE, accounting). Degrees that have a direct application to occupations that the job market pays well.

Basically, I am having a hard time justifying if my overall college experience was worth the education I got, and vice versa. Parts of me wish I went to community college first to save money for an advanced degree, but I will truly never know. My family wanted me to get a foundation for what I want to do next, and they did that successfully, and they expressed no regrets. Sometimes, I feel as if I should apologize to them for not studying something that the job market demands.

What do you think? I don’t “regret” my decisions in life, but I think back and obviously wonder what other paths could have taken me down.

What gives away a Gymnast?

Hi! So, I recently started a self defense class, and my teacher (after ~6 40 minute classes) guessed that I was a Gymnast or Dancer. I was a competitive (male) gymnast for 6 years, with my highest achievement being a second place medal in the state of Michigan for my rings routine. It has been nearly a decade since I quit. I asked him how he knew, and he gave me some reasons, but I didn’t really understand them, and didn’t want to bother him more, so here I am asking you all. Thank you for the help! (Note: I also tried to find anything out online, and it all just talks about what can cause bad proprioception, not what can cause it to be good.)

1) He said that both gymnasts and dancers have really good proprioception (the ability to know your own body’s position, in case I misspelled it). That makes sense. What doesn’t is how you can tell someone has that without directly asking them.

2) He said my kicks were a “dead giveaway”. How?!? Are they not just a kick? This bit really stumped me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Uneven Back Development, how do I fix this??

For context, I’ve played baseball for most of my life, which I suspect contributed to the imbalance. My right lat is noticeably bigger overall, and I even have stretch marks on that side.
However, the imbalance is a little unusual:
Left side: My upper lat/upper-back region appears more developed, but my lower lat is noticeably smaller.
Right side: My lower lat appears significantly more developed, while my upper lat/upper-back region looks less developed compared to my left.

I’ve been doing unilateral wide-grip lat pulldowns on my left side to try to even things out, but if anything I think that’s growing the upper region of my lats and teres muscles rather than the lower part of my back that I’m trying to even out. This is especially noticeable in the second photo
My right shoulders internal rotation is less than my left due to baseball, which can also be noticed in the second photo. Does this contribute to the imbalances?

Is it actually possible to emphasize the upper and lower portions of the lats through different exercises?

Also any alternatives or other exercise that can better target my imbalances would be appreciated.

Edit: Also have an imbalance in my obliques where right side is more developed, causing my left side to have rib flare and my right side to not. Maybe this also affects the development of my back/ any imbalance when lifting. However they are easier to target so I’m working on it

Expert on Kinesiology- javelin throw

Hi all,

I am working on a story related to the science behind javelin throw where I am looking to answer these questions:

  1. Is there any specific release angle that may result in a good throw in javelin?
  2. What should be the optimum release height?(A study mentions 105% of thrower's height) [https://www.researchgate.net/publication/351579082_The_Optimum_Release_Height_for_Javelin_Throwers_in_Proportion_to_Their_Length\]

Please reply or dm if you are an expert on the subject.

Thank you.

Kinesiology career prospects in Vancouver as an international student

Hi everyone! I'm currently in my second semester of the Kinesiology diploma program at Langara College, and my plan is to transfer to UBC to complete my bachelor's degree afterward. I'm also an international student. I genuinely enjoy studying Kinesiology, but recently I've become really worried about the job market and career opportunities in this field. Since I'm an international student, I felt that many other healthcare programs weren't really accessible options for me, so I chose Kinesiology. I've heard from many people that it has good job prospects, but when I look at job postings and search online, I'm not getting that impression at all. I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have studied Kinesiology or are currently working in the field. Are you happy with your career choice? Was it difficult to find a job after graduating, and is the pay enough to make it a worthwhile career?

Recommendations for studying Motor Learning, control and motor memory from a Kinesiologist’s perspective?

Hey guys, I'm looking for sources that I can use to do a deep dive in Motor Learning, Control, and motor memory but I want to approach it specifically through the lens of kinesiology and movement science.

I did learn about these topics during my bachelors but it was mostly from a clinical pov. I want to look for theoretical stuff like an actual book and/or well established review papers.

Obviously, I can do a quick Google search or ask an AI for a list of top textbooks, but I’m posting here because I want to hear from actual people who have read these resources and found them helpful.

Thank you!

VO2 and zone 2 help

hi all, I’m a aspiring mountaineer and have been doing lots of zone 2 training. I just did my first lab VO2 test and im confused than ever.

I’m a 46-year-old male, 6’1”, about 192 lb, training for mountaineering. A recent KORR/CardioCoach treadmill test reported VO₂ max 50.5, peak HR 183, aerobic threshold (AeT) 107 bpm, and anaerobic threshold (AT) 147 bpm.

The report’s printed heart-rate training chart lists Zone 2 as 125–138 bpm. Before this test, I’d been using roughly 115–128 bpm. The stage averages also show carbs becoming the larger fuel source at a much lower HR: at 96 bpm, the report estimates about 59% fat and 41% carbs; at 101 bpm, about 46% fat and 54% carbs.

I’m confused about which number to use for easy aerobic base training. Is the printed 125–138 range based on a different zone system than the reported AeT of 107? If the goal is to train below AeT, should I be staying under about 107 bpm? And is this kind of short graded treadmill test enough to set that threshold, or should I confirm it with the tester or a field test?

am I doing this right as I’m doing about 10-15 hours a week in zone 2 (120-138) mixed in with one day of 5x4 min hard intervals.

any advise would be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU!

Canadian/UK PT interviews

Hello everyone, I am currently in my second year of a kinesiology degree and I am trying to get ahead of the game when it comes to my PT school applications (in terms of knowing what to expect) so can anyone just tell me what there experience was like during the interview process like how it went, what kind of questions they were asking and overall if experience (volunteer work, etc) actually plays a big role or if it’s mainly just your GPA. Let me know and thank you!

Professional Liability Insurance Recommendations for COKO Registration

Hi everyone!

I'm currently in the process of registering with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario (COKO), and I need to submit proof of professional liability insurance to complete my registration.

I'm looking for recommendations on insurance providers.

  • Which insurance provider do you use or recommend?
  • How much do you pay annually?

I'd appreciate any advice or recommendations.

Graduating with a Kinesiology degree and feeling lost — OT, sonography, or something else?

Hi everyone! I’m graduating with my Kinesiology degree and am trying to figure out what I actually want to do career-wise, and I would LOVE some advice from people who have been in similar situations.

I’ve always had a strong passion for helping people and working directly with others, which is what initially drew me toward Occupational Therapy. I really like the idea of helping people regain independence, work toward their goals, and improve their day-to-day lives.

The problem is that I know OT can be quite competitive to get into, and going internationally for an OT degree can be very expensive. I’m still considering applying, but I’m also trying to be realistic and explore other options rather than putting all my eggs in one basket.

I’ve also looked into medical sonography/diagnostic medical sonography because it seems like a hands-on healthcare career, but I’m not sure about the pay and if its something that would eventually becoming boring to me.

At this point, the things I know for sure are:

  • I do not want a career where I’m sitting at a desk all day
  • I want to work with and help people
  • I enjoy being active and hands-on
  • I’m interested in healthcare, rehabilitation, movement, and working with people
  • I’m am fine to go back to school.

So, what other careers or career pathways should I be looking into?

I’d especially love to hear from people who started with a Kinesiology degree and ended up doing something I might not have considered. What do you do, what does your day-to-day look like, and do you enjoy it?

OT, sonography, rehab careers, healthcare careers, trades, anything — I’m open to ideas! 😂

I love kinesiology, is it worth a Phd?

Im a Junior and have taken 2/3 of required courses for my Kines BS. I absolutely love the field with all my heart, if money was not a concern I would try for my MS>PHD right out of college next year. Is it worth it?

What am I supposed to do here?

Hey gang, I wanted to reach out and get some help here. I am considering my next steps out of the military, and am already slated to begin a job that will pay enough, along with disability and whatever else I end up making. One of the things that I am considering is getting a degree in Kinesiology and then continuing down the personal trainer route, or if I can get deep enough, then exercise science path, research and development of techniques, studying women's health and hypertrophy, etc. Huge fan of bodybuilding, powerlifting, movement in general, and am already an instructor with recalcitrant students, so figure it's just an extension of my hobbies/current career.

Money is less important, especially because I already have a degree in my money making field. Does Kinesiology make sense for my end goal? If no, what are your recommendations for me to check out? Thanks for your time!

I don't know what to do with my future

Hello, I 20M am a third year at Oregon State studying Kinesiology. I started as ME and went over to Kin because I found movement, health and anatomy fascinating. I'm starting to realize this specific health path is really not for me. I've talked to my advisors about going into Bio-Health Sciences but I would have to stay here for another 4 years which I really can't do or afford.

At this point I plan on finishing my Kin degree and going from there. The only field that potentially interests me is working as an ATC for professional football which would require a masters.

I guess I just don't know where I'm going with this degree or my life in general. Sometimes I wish I didn't even go to college. I'd just love any form of advice or help.

Thanks.

Application Advice University of Calgary

Thumbnail

Given that you are limited to applying for a first and second choice at University of Calgary is it better to apply for two programs under the same degree (for example kinesiology and motor and psychosocial aspects of movements programs within a B.Kin) or only one BKin program and another degree program entirely?

Mid College Crisis

At first when I got into my first year in college last year, I was set on becoming a PT, but within the few past months I’m not sure if that what I really want. My gpa isn’t really high, I also don’t want to take out $100k loans for grad school and pay it off for the next 10 years if my life. I have been looking into Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) but there is a specific major for it. I have heard Kinesiology majors can get into OHS, but I don’t know any Kin majors who have turned to OHS. How hard is it to get into OHS and with a Kinesiology degree? What I also would like to know too, what other careers do I have left if it’s not PT or OT?

FYI - I will be taking student loans, so definitely not keen on Sydney and Melbourne

Physical Education Field

Hi everyone!

Is there anyone here who is currently studying or has studied Physical Education or Sports Science in Korea through GKS?
I’m considering one of these majors and would really love to hear about your actual experience with the major, courses, practical training, and university life.
If you’re studying either of them, I’d really appreciate it if you could share your experience or give me any advice before I make my choice.

Thank you! 🫶🏻
