KSP 1 Image/Video Help me name this space shuttle!
Yet another day and my second attempt at a space shuttle is here. I'll keep trying to make it work.
Dont criticise my design if you're gonna be mean about it please! I came here for a name.
Tommorow, I'll choose the name i like the most and you'll get your comment in my ksp save.

i think Ulysses is a pretty cool name lowkey

A modern retelling of Odysseus, a name bound for an epic journey. Very apt

The shuttles were generally named after famous ocean ships. Good options might be the Resolution or the Constellation

What ship is more famous than the titanic?

I mean... The Gemini III spacecraft was (unofficially, because NASA wasn't exactly happy about it) named Molly Brown because of Grissom's Liberty Bell 7, which sank after splashdown due to a premature hatch ejection. ("The Unsinkable" molly brown was a Titanic survivor, chosen because NASA shot down the name Titanic)

Constellation is a good choice because it is one of the eight original United States Navy frigates.

Well, since there wasn't a United States on Kerbin (presumably), there wouldn't have been a US Navy ship called Constellation. HOWEVER, there could be a Kerbstallation, or something like that. Need to make up a little bit of head canon. Woomerang could be a small island nation with extreme political power. Maybe Woomsolution?

Yeah but you need to add a kernel flare to it. Like Kersolution or Kerbstellation

I’m naming my next space shuttles Titanic and Lusitania

The moat important thing to take into consideration when building shuttles is weight balance. Too far to one side and your shit will want to tip over.
This is why shuttles usually carry heavy cargo. It helps to balance out the weight of the propulsion system. If you're moving lighter cargo than a traditional launch vehicle is often the better choice.
But who made good choices in KSP anyway? Build looks sick btw

Kershel is a good name I think
Space chuttle Kershel
Or without nasa knock off space chuttle
Spacer Kershel
And next chuttle
Spacer jebin
And so on and so on

The Kerlumbia!
No relation to the nasa shuttle… in unrelated news the luxury cruise liner Kertanic has struck an ice cube and sunk in the Kerlantic Kerocean

I liked the commenter that said Ulysses. In that same vein what about "Hermes"?

That's the Condor because it's a big bird, and doesn't feel like an Eagle to me
What's on screen specifically is probably saved as Condor-H-L, if that's mainly a cargo Hauler with a Large booster build to throw it anywhere in Kerbin I need, roughly
Because one I find a design I like, I just keep making variants until I need something totally different

Making a Space Shuttle replica is a rite of passage for all KSP players. How does it fly?
I made a functional one years ago and it was honestly hell trying to get it to actually work. And then after a whole evening of troubleshooting and testing I put it on Steam Workshop and no one ever downloaded it lol.
I managed one with 3200m/s delta V after exterior tank detachment and it fully reached orbit before that. 80m/s stallspeed. Re entry was hell. Managed to do all that without sneaking in canards. It was also fairly modular with space for a lot of cargo. But realistically it was just not worth it, at least not over using a rocket. Too much hassle to actually get back down. Spaceplane parts have atrocious heat resistance so I basically had to skim half the planet in the upper atmosphere before attempting to go lower.

Enterprise, constitution, etc you can look up the names of the irl shuttles

I like naming mine after Greek gods/goddesses. I know NASA already does this but I like to carry on the tradition. I always name my interplanetary missions after gods and moon/station missions after goddesses. Weird I know but I like to think it’s a cool naming system.

"Astra", "Dragon", "Stellaris", or "Maven" (the last one is a extremely obvious reference!).

u/multyfora 10h ago
ideally the name should hint at the purpose of the craft but a cool name would be something like "pursuit" "Prometheus" or like "Hermes"

Curious here, I tried to build a similar one and could not get it to launch straight, any advice?

i cant get it to launch straight either

u/DonutBoi172 4h ago
if you watch actual shuttle launches, the shuttle engines are gimballed backwards to counteract the weight.
im not sure how to get this to work in ksp. im sure someone had a solution because i've seen it done on youtube before

Turn on mirror symmetry and angle the engines back a few degrees in the VAB. The vector engines are mandatory only because they have the widest gimbal range.
Make the external fuel tank out of multiple tanks, and if using a real fuels mod put hydrogen on the bottom and oxygen on the top. Otherwise, just set the bottom tanks to drain first. It helps control the center of mass.
If you’re willing to use mods: The default SAS system freaks out when handling shuttles. Mechjeb flies way more stable. Kerbal engineer gives you a torque readout, which is helpful to see when adjusting the angle of the engines. Check the torque values at liftoff, just after booster separation, and when the tanks are 99% empty by adjusting fuel volumes in the VAB. You will not get them down to zero, but you do need to make sure they’re small enough that the gimballing of your engine can compensate for it.

use MechJeb's SMART A.S.S. to KILL ROT. It's not autopilot but makes it way easier to fly by making the SAS competent

Challenger if you're bad at flying (like me), Discovery if you're more fortunate
