Affordable Juneau in damage control mode

And I love to see it. Interesting exercise in mental gymnastics, per usual, in Rodell's monthly "anti-CBJ-at-all-costs" column. Affordable Juneau fucked around and is finding out. They squeaked through their bullshit initiatives because they put a lot of time and energy into promoting them with little to no pushback, including covering half the commercial real estate in this town in their posters. Now that the community has woken up and taken note, affordable Juneau's little exercise has backfired into increased sales tax. Which I'm all for, for the record, just enjoying watching them squirm.

Getting a little off topic, but each election season it increasingly strikes me how wide the political gap is between businesses and citizenry in this town. Most neighborhoods you see almost entirely progressive leaning political signs. But drive through a commercial zone, and it's the polar opposite. Voters should ask themselves why that is. Unless you're a business owner that cares only about profits and running a tax fraud operation (which believe me represents a significant portion of the profits for many businesses), chances are the candidates and propositions/ballot measures you see promoted on commercial properties are absolutely not in your best interests. Do you want higher profit margins for a handful of wealthy business owners, or a better community/state/country to call home?

Fantastic reporting from the AP on trawling. Thorough and does a good job presenting several sides of the issue.

Housing

Hey everyone! My name is Charlie, and my partner Tat, our dog Daisy, and I are moving from Georgia to Juneau in January 2027! I'll be attending the University of Alaska Southeast this spring to pursue my degree in Marine Biology.

We're hoping to find a long-term rental for the two of us and Daisy, ideally within about 30 minutes of the UAS Juneau campus. Our budget is around $2,200 a month, and we're looking for an apartment or house that allows dogs.

If anyone knows of any rentals becoming available around January 2027 or has any leads, please feel free to message me! We'd really appreciate any help or recommendations.

We're excited to make Juneau our new home and become part of the community! 🙂

Hello from the Philippines! Aspiring pianist dreaming of moving to Juneau one day - any advice on the local music scene?

Hey Juneau!

I'm a pianist currently living in the Philippines, and it’s my big goal/dream to eventually move to Juneau, play live gigs, and teach piano lessons locally.

I'm working hard on honing my skills, but in the meantime, I’d love to learn more about the community from people who live there:

* What is the local music scene like, especially for acoustic/piano players?

* Are there venues, cafes, or community spaces that regularly host live local musicians?

* Is there good demand for local private music teachers?

Any insights, advice, or general thoughts on what life is like for musicians in Juneau would mean a lot! Thanks for taking the time to read, and I hope to make it over to your beautiful corner of the world someday.

Unforeseen Costs of Living in Juneau

I received a job offer and we are comparing what our living expenses are now and what it will be in Juneau. We are targeting a 3 bed 1 or 2 bath townhome/house for renting/buying. What we are thinking of now for costs in Juneau:

Electricity: $200

Oil: $300 average per month (summer less, winter extremely high)

Internet: $100 a month

Vehicle insurance: $70 a month for liability for two vehicles

City utilities: $200 a month

Rent: $2800-3500 (If anybody has insight into what property taxes/insurance/mortgage would be for something like this as well, I can research, but would love input)

Anything else we are missing? Any gotcha's? Pest control? Thanks and here for any questions.

New Puddle Park

I understand the new walkway on the docks downtown is supposed to have an aquatic theme (waves & fish stamped in) but if you ask me the shitty grading that has resulted in many perpetual puddles isn't exactly "value added". Should I be annoyed at CBJ or Dawson for this?

I'm trying to plan some hikes for me and my wife that aren't too strenuous and these are the ones that I was looking at. Obviously, I didn't list every trail and so you all feel free to add in your favorite if it's not listed.

Job Offer - Need Real Advice

Hello!

I recently received an exciting job offer in Juneau, a healthcare role with a salary exceeding $120,000 annually. The position also includes a substantial bonus and a yearly raise, along with relocation assistance.

Currently residing in Georgia, I’m married with three children—a teenager, a preteen, and a young child—and we have pets. We would be relocating entirely, which is both thrilling and daunting. While I’m eager for the opportunity, I acknowledge that I’m not fully prepared for the realities of living in Juneau.

Living in Georgia isn’t cheap, and we’re ready to leave the South for several reasons. Firstly, our political beliefs don’t align with the current climate in Georgia (we are very liberal, open hearted and loving) and secondly, we lack a strong sense of community here. We’re seeking a place where our children can have a genuine childhood and experience life at a more relaxed pace.

After thorough research, I’ve discovered that housing is the most significant expense, especially considering our pets. Since we’re not in a position to purchase a home yet, we’re exploring the possibility of renting an apartment or a house.

As newcomers, we’re curious about what life is truly like in Juneau. What should we be aware of that we might not have considered? Additionally, we’re wondering about the local grocery stores and other essential places to shop.

We’re contemplating the idea of bringing only the essentials, throwing out a lot of our furniture and purchasing furniture once we settle in. However, we’re unsure if this approach is feasible given what can be purchased readily in Juneau.

Given the magnitude of this life change, I want to make an informed decision. Give it to be straight, what parts am I missing? What do we need to consider?

Thanks for the support, possible new neighbors! 😊

‘We’ve given up half our home’: Major floods on the rise in Juneau, Alaska

Thumbnail

Malachi Thorington and his partner Elizabeth Figus have seen their home in Juneau, Alaska, flood in each of the past few summers. “We get flooded every year. We’ve given up half of our home, but we can live in the second story with some level of comfort.”

These floods are a consequence of climate change. As nearby glaciers melt, water collects and forms a lake high up in the mountains. Typically, that water is held back by one of the glaciers. But when the water level rises high enough – like it has in recent summers – billions of gallons can burst through and rush down into Juneau. This phenomenon first caused minor flooding 15 years ago but has caused major floods in recent years.

Officials have put up some protections in the area, like a temporary flood barrier, but Thorington’s street is still vulnerable. So to address the problem long-term, residents, officials, and experts are now debating a variety of complex solutions, including a buyout for properties like Thorington’s. Because as long as the melting continues, flooding could wreak havoc in Juneau for years to come “And where our house is located, it could very easily undermine where our home is and wash it away.”

If you steal a crab pot, you're scum. I'd care a lot less if you'd just emptied it and reset it (I would still be mad, but much less so), but taking the whole pot?

Yeah, screw you. I'd be more expressive but I'm not trying to catch a ban.

And yeah, I'm well aware that whoever did it probably won't see this, but I'm not on Facebook and just needed to say it somewhere.

General election question

Does anyone know when the mail-in ballots for the upcoming state General Election will be mailed to people that requested them? I tried emailing Div of Elections and their response was:

“Please contact our office, ph# 907-465-4611, 8:00am-4:30pm, M-F. We will assist you.”

They can‘t just respond to a simple question via email? They have their email addy on their website so if they won’t respond to questions via email, they should just remove the link. I’ll call if necessary although their menu was a bit long, but just thought someone here might know. Div of Elections has gotten weird. They used to be super responsive to emails.

Legislator Housing Commentary

Recently I wondered where legislators stayed during session and what happened to that housing when not in session. I looked more into and it turns out they have 4 apartment buildings located downtown.

The pricing for these apartments are supposed to be market rate from pricing as low as 1135 (studio) up to 1850 (2 beds). These come fully furnished and with amenities. Whenever there’s no session the housing is vacant as only legislators can stay year round (staff can only stay during session).
