FYI: I have disallowed crossposting from other subs
As per the title. The reason is simply to keep my workload under control because about half such posts seem to break one rule or another.
I assume this is because Reddit decided to make crossposting easy, which causes uploaders to bypass the whole "read the subreddit rules" thing.

Subreddit Rules Update 2025
The basic rules remain unchanged from my last post 7 years ago, but I want to clarify my stance on AI.
GENRE: for the purpose of this sub, "Jazz Fusion" music means specifically "hard instrumental jazz-rock fusion". Note that I use a broad definition of "rock" that includes genres like funk, r&b, or metal. I also use a definition of "hard" that can include "beautiful" but excludes "easy listening". That said, genre boundaries are always fuzzy and subjective so I tend to be generous in edge cases.
GROUP PERFORMANCES ONLY. Human musicians making music with other human musicians only, please. This means no "here's me playing [x]", and DEFINITELY no AI-generated music.
NUISANCE. This includes spam, willfully disregarding the rules, or otherwise making yourself objectionable and creating unnecessary work for me. This also includes bot or botlike behaviour, like reposts and low effort karma farming. Honest mistakes are fine, but consistently antisocial behaviour WILL get you banned.
(If you're at the level of a Plini or a Jacob Collier I can make an exception for a solo performance, but it needs to be a complete piece and exceptionally good.)
It's amazing how little work this sub requires from me, the only active moderator, given our membership size and activity level. Generally this is an excellent sub: thanks for helping keep it that way.
[Edited for more clarity on the genre definition.]

New record coming out Oct 21, here’s our live music video.
This song is inspired by Rob Araujo and Thelonious Monk. Maybe an odd combo, but I tried to manifest that by a disjunct piano melody with more lush major chords.
Hope you enjoy, record comes out Oct 21st. More songs like this, mixed with harder fusion.

What genre of jazz is this? Big band sound with anime and video game music
I recently saw a live band with trumpets, saxophones, and other brass instruments, along with keyboards, electric guitar, bass, and drums. They played instrumental music with a big band / jazz sound, mixed with some funk and jazz fusion. A lot of their music came from anime and video game soundtracks. I think one of their songs was from Cowboy Bebop, if that’s a good example.
Is there a specific genre for this kind of music?

A long time in the works playlist curated to a specific noir take on Jazz. Certainly adjacent and I think you guys will dig some of these tracks!
This started originally when I heard The Viscounts 1959 cover of Harlem Nocturne in the 1983 Carpenter movie, Christine. A glorious moody pre-twin peaks noir jazz track, I then tried lots of other "normal" jazz and it just didnt get the same vibe. The Viscounts were a surf/adjacent group first, jazz group second. Their sound, I quickly learned, was the byproduct of performing jazz numbers with non jazz instruments and non jazz techniques. To put it short! Duke Ellington as amazing as he is, simply wasn't going to cut it!
Later on I found out about a different genre called exotica through The Viscounts cover of Off Shore by Leo Diamond, a lovely number needless to say. As is all of The Viscounts jazz covers.
Eventually my searches led me down the niche of 1960s "titty shaker" music, which is funny as hell when I spent months searching via serious genre names like "jazz noir" or "instro surf" or "surf noir" and stuff like that. But this titty shaker stuff (also known as Las Vegas Grind) was definitely the right direction for me to go in, specifically the sub-sub genre known as Slow Grind. There is like 11 comp albums of Slow Grind and I thoroughly recommend them!
This playlist pulls from lots of compilation albums, such as "Chicago Soul"... and one i think r/JazzFusion will appreciste being "Swing for a Crime"... as well as the notorious Exotica comp album "Technicolor Paradise"
Enjoy the 4+ hour long playlist guys :) I hope its no problem cross posting this from r/Exotica to this sub, I was recommended to post it to this sub too!... frankly it is so niche I dont know many other subs that would appreciate it. Hopefully the links didnt get scuffed lol.

One Hundred Ways
So I’ve turned my wife onto James Ingram and listening to “The Power Of Great Music” the other day, One Hundred Ways came on (what a song). Anyhow, this led me to David Sanborn’s version on Straight to the Heart and how astounding the whole album is.
As there’s a lot of live tracks on the album, was anyone in Reddit world at the time the album was recorded (yes I know One Hundred Ways wasn’t live) but much of it was…
If you were there, what was it like? I’ve been listening to this album for 35 years and it’s still captivating.
Also if you have the vinyl it’s way better than the CD.

1983 Scott Henderson - Magical Moment on Imaginary Voyage with Jean-Luc Ponty !
Should be cued at 1:27:40 !
A lot to unpack here! Fresh off of his 1982 stint as a Jeff Berlin member, pretty much just landed in LA, already teaching at GIT, and boom- scores a big gig with Jean-Luc Ponty.
This is all PRE- Tribal Tech and Pre Chick Corea, and he was likely not even a blip on the radar of music press back then - just known in the upper eschelons. Anyway, this solo exemplifies how he already had his completely original voice front loaded prior to the Corea gig - metal chops with bebop !

The Other World - Judy Roberts (Inner City Records 1980).
Judy Roberts - vocals, keys and synths; Neal Seroka - guitars; Michael Fiorino - bass; David Derge - drums; Tony Carpenter - congas and percussion. A fine debut from singer/pianist Judy Roberts. A lovely slice of jazz funk/fusion.
