Java developers, how did you get started with open-source contributions?

I found a bug in a String Boot tutorial project where they misconfigured the mysql connection string. I submitted an issue and a matching PR/MR. Was accepted. Nothing fancy but starting small is key.

Another (non-java) open source project is FerretDB, a MongoDB frontend for Postgres. I introduced exponential backoff with jitter. In the end it was improved and somewhat rewritten. Lesson: your code will be rewritten and that is okay and expected. Don't have an ego.

Start your own open source project and maintain it over a year
