Jacobs of Reddit, was “Gaycob” a nickname that stuck throughout school, just occasional teasing, or something you never experienced? (Genuinely asking as I love the name but don't know any Jacobs!)
My wife and I are considering naming our son Jacob, and I love pretty much everything about it and has great nickname options for different stages of life, especially with his two older sisters.
Literally the only potential issue I could think of was the “Gaycob” teasing, but I realize plenty of popular boys' names can be twisted in similar ways, like Jason (“Gay-son”), Jayden (“Gay-den”), Aiden (“Gay-den”) or Hayden (“Gay-den”). Kids can find ammunition in almost any name if they really want to.
He'll already have a female surname, which caused me plenty of teasing growing up, so I'd rather not give kids any extra ammunition. It also has it's own nicknames.
And before anyone takes this as homophobic, that's really not where I'm coming from. I'm not suggesting there's anything wrong with being gay. My concern is purely about how kids might use the name in a derogatory way, particularly when combined with his female surname. Having experienced that kind of teasing myself, I'd rather not set him up for the same thing (or worse) if I can avoid it.
Jacobs of Reddit, did “Gaycob” ever become a persistent nickname that followed you throughout school, was it just occasional teasing, or did you never experience it at all? Trying to understand how common it actually was.
(Genuinely asking because I love the name for our son but don't personally know any Jacobs to ask.)
