Thragg: Fucking your people shall be our salvation

619

u/McDonaldsSoap Apr 22 '26

I wonder what kind of father Thragg will be. Seems like we barely scratched the surface of his mind

Also Lucan has to host some kind of game show. C'mon

Honestly, Thragg is very reasonable here.

1.3k

u/Random_throwaway0351 Apr 22 '26

Still an impossible choice for Mark to make, knowing that once the Viltrumites regain their numbers they’ll just start conquering trillions again. I still feel like he made the most reasonable choice in the moment

837

u/mrspinurhood Apr 22 '26

Yeah mark honestly had no other choice, thragg doesn’t give a fuck he would’ve torn the planet to pieces for what they did to viltrum.

455

u/HotTakes4HotCakes Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

I actually don't think he would.

I haven't read the comic so I have no idea what's actually going to happen but I have a suspicion that Thragg is looking for more than just breeding stock.

I think he also wants a home, not a vacant rock. Not only did he lose Viltrum the planet, their entire culture is gone. He may find earthlings beneath him, but maybe he's just come to accept that Viltrum is done and his people are basically extinct, so he's willing to assimilate now and then eventually take over. A fresh start, and a new civilization to raise up.

Nolan assimilated with Earth and seemed happy about it, afterall. An afront to Vitramite culture, sure, but he was happy, and produced viable offspring, so maybe there's something to this planet that's worth investing in.

He also probably understands that in terms of potential offspring, it wouldn't be a good idea to harm humans too much. They're an important resource now. 37 Viltrumites is too small a gene pool, and he wants a nice, sizable, diverse population of potential humans to counter that.

246

u/Reggiardito Apr 22 '26

I love this take. I also haven't read the comic, but thragg definitely seems less cold than he initially seems. A very interesting character for sure.

118

u/Daxx22 Apr 22 '26

He's just not stupid. As he stated, it's either mutual survival, or mutual destruction (for now).

That said the obvious long term outcome is if they are allowed to breed and build up numbers, it won't matter how much these 37 "assimilate" they or their offspring would eventually be a major galactic threat once again. It's an interesting juxtaposition with the "Nolan's Redemption" storyline: it's showing that they can change/rehabilitate, but can the galaxy at large really take that chance? The "intelligent" bet is no.

Especially since, well, he didn't get his powers until he was like 17-18. The situation isn't great, sure, but Earth has close to two decades to figure out what to do before the Viltrumites get any reinforcements.

170

u/LADYBIRD_HILL Apr 22 '26

And that's assuming they don't make the same decision Mark made to protect humanity.

490

u/Fornad Apr 22 '26

The interesting thing here is that Thragg doesn't appear to have considered how human society turned one of Viltrum's greatest soldiers (Nolan) into a 'traitor' after only two decades.

I suppose he doesn't have much choice either if he wants to save his people, but the chance of a few more Viltrumites turning against him in favour of their new families feels high.

139

u/GOT_Wyvern Apr 22 '26

I would imagine Thragg internalises the issue as something incredibly personal. That Nolan betrayed the Empire not because he's changed, but because he choice his family over the Empire.

The solution, therefore, would have just been to allow the families Viltrumites form on Earth to be sparred and protected.

The Cecil one was the one that scared me. It was near the end of the episode so I thought they were setting up multiple fake outs, only for the last one to be real (was right on this, but miscalculated which would be the last one).

So I was expecting for Thragg to really kill Cecil, and use the last 10 minutes for a big action piece like the show got used to.

571

u/SomeShiitakePoster Debbie Grayson Apr 22 '26

Probably strict orders from Thragg not to cause any sort of scene that might give them away, but yea if it went further than a word and a whistle I think she would definitely find a way to make them pay

236

u/Scarletsblood Apr 22 '26

She's also basically under orders to breed with humans. Tearing off limbs is not conductive for that, yes the potential mates are pathetic but quantity over quality is only chance Viltrumites have now.

278

u/rainbowyuc Apr 22 '26

This plan is a pretty bad deal for the female viltrumites. They have to carry a baby for presumably 9 months. The guy viltrumites can just fuck and gtfo.

239

u/DreadY2K Apr 22 '26

Presumably the men need to stick around in some capacity to raise them as Viltrumites. Otherwise, they'll be just humans with powers and probably not suddenly go along with some alien empire.

96

u/whousesgmail Apr 22 '26

Yeah even if the kids grew up shitty and became villains with their powers, they still won’t be Viltrumites which kind of defeats the purpose.

Although Nolan clearly did a terrible job raising Mark as a Viltrumite, he was clearly too good of a normal father lol

71

u/Alt4816 Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

Nolan didn't know that Mark would get powers so he basically raised him as a human and taught him that viltrumites were nice.

I imagine that Thragg will order the new children to be raised as viltrumite supremacists.

Way easier for the dude viltrumites to repopulate the race than the girls. Wonder how the women would even pick?

Also not to be weird but I hope that difference is actually relevant. I think Mules are made when a female horse breeds with a male donkey, and something else called a Hinny is made when it’s a female donkey and a male horse. Different animals, technically, with different strengths and features.

Love how in the end both Mark and Allen are faced with impossible trolley problems. Mark made his choice, and now we have to see what Allen does.

Mark chose to save humankind at the cost of saving the Viltrumites, Allen has the choice to end the Vultrumites but possibly humankind as well. What an insane cliffhanger, SO excited for season 5

330

u/MrBrownCat Apr 22 '26

I can already tell Mark “allowing” the viltrumites to stay and breed on Earth will put tons of doubt in Allen’s mind of if he should kill Mark, Oliver and Nolan.

I did not see the Thragg twist coming at all, that was a brilliant move. It deescalated the war in the short term but massively escalated the Viltrumite threat in the long term. It's like the biggest and longest ticking time bomb ever. Bravo Thragg (and the writers).

154

u/wardengorri Apr 22 '26

Seriously though, no clue how the confrontation between them was going to go and the way they did it was really fascinating. Although he's seen the product of assimilating with humans as successful through Mark, he seems to miss the potential of it changing them too.

For the whole episode I kept thinking "Ok, so this character dying to Thragg is just a PTSD hallucination, I'm worried they'll eventually pull a fake out and someone will die for real in front of Mark". Then throughout the episode all the most important characters died in Mark's hallucinations, so I thought "Ok, is there any beloved character left? Maybe everyone is safe for now".

Then Thragg showed up for real and I felt stupid because he doesn't really need to kill anybody, his sole presence is already scary enough to make the scene powerful.

He probably assumed any sort of defense network or scouting apparatus would find him and relay to Mark that he was there. Mark just stumbled into him first.

"Nearly die 2,341 more times...and then we can talk"

That's basically what's it's all about. Nolan is doing good work and he's probably the biggest thing stopping Thragg and co. but there's SO much space between where Nolan is now and true "redemption", if that thing is even possible for Nolan.

That relationship with Earth may just be a bridge too far

274

u/bipolarondrugs Omni-Man Apr 22 '26

I think with Invincible people forget that the theme isn't really redemption, because the bad Nolan has done(and others) is just so immense. How can you ever really make up for it? It's radical forgiveness in light of immense self improvement. These viltrumites and Nolan are like 2nd to 3rd generation Nazis indoctrinated from birth. It's so conflicting but that's why it's so spectacular.

I also like how it seems like that was the first time Nolan really considered the other people he killed or caused to die, rather than his still selfish thoughts about only hurting Mark and Debbie.

u/McDonaldsSoap Apr 22 '26

Just like in the Fallout show, the more experienced actors steal the show

152

u/The_Throwback_King Lucan Apr 22 '26

I love that they are letting Debbie and Nolan's relationship have the time to properly breathe. It's not just instant reconciliation.

Debbie is still largely cold towards Nolan but she is remaining open towards him, largely for the sake of the boys.

I'm not sure if they'll fully rekindle things romantically; start totally fresh from square one, or just keep it platonic as they co-parent Mark and Oliver but it's such a refreshing approach.

Either way, they are handling it SO well.

Also lowkey almost expected to see Darkblood down there somewhere. You'd think the presence of 37 very, very pissed-off Viltrumites would wake up Satan just from the aura changing.

I like the idea with the Cecil fake-out that, to some extent, Mark does genuinely care for Cecil. With how many fake out’s this episode had with his loved ones, thought that would’ve finally been the real thing.

I really like that they had Thragg comfort Mark on his decision.  After pointing out the irony of Mark being their savior he could have just flown away and let him stew on his thoughts, but he heard Mark's horror when he said "What have I done".  He could have just flown away, left it there, but he stopped and gave him a reaffirmation that he saved everyone with his choice.  He may be a tyrant who sees other species as we view ants, but he cares deeply for his people (now that they are so few).  Even if Mark is his enemy Thragg cares for him as one of Viltrumite blood, he didn't need to offer him that reassurance, but he did.  It's a nice way to show another layer to his character that we know is there, but hasn't really been shown.  It's a small change, but a meaningful one.

So they can't even do a thing like drop the scourge virus on Earth to kill only viltrumites.

"He's still processing whatever happened out there"

"How can you tell?"

"Because I've seen that look before."

Might be the worst conversation in the series. William did you just forget what happened to Rick like a year ago and Rick why are you stating rhe blatant obvious.

I like the contrast between Cecil's conversations with Nolan and then with Mark. With Nolan it's unsurprisingly the clipped approach and wide distance he maintains against a former ally turned enemy whom he knows chose to wreck deliberate destruction, who Cecil has no real reason to believe regrets his actions beyond the pain Nolan caused his own family.

With Mark, despite their differences, they've weathered some of the worst times together, and when it counted most (against Nolan, Conquest), Mark nearly died for Earth multiple times. Cecil softens seeing Mark downcast and in distress, and I don't believe it's entirely an act or manipulation on Cecil's part to close the distance between them and ground Mark by placing a hand on him.

Cecil and Donald are naturally afraid of Mark's power, knowing what Nolan was capable of; but in S3E7, Donald says that the alternate evil Invincibles come from dimensions "where Mark isn't so...Mark," implying they do believe that he is a good person at heart, despite his flaws and mistakes. In S2E7, although Cecil tells Mark he should have agreed to Anissa's demand to serve Viltrum, when Mark affirms that rejecting Viltrum is "more than just words," Cecil smiles genuinely, offering Mark a hand up.

I do miss their brief moments of camaraderie. I know everyone just wants to see the fallout from Conquest, but I think this little interaction between Mark and Cecil in the finale is one of my favorite moments of the season.

I don’t blame mark for his decision in the end like genuinely what do you do. He bought time for sure but you can’t just 1v1 him after you saw thaddeus get deleted and your dad that you thought was one of the strongest viltrumites and never seen lose get Swiss cheesed with 1 move. His PTSD didn’t help either but maybe it did?
