Events IE Events For October 12, 2026 - October 18, 2026

Guess what's back? Back again? Weekly threads are back. That had way too many syllables to scan as a parody of Shady's Back, but I guess you can tell like your band manager or local locksmith who moonlights as a magician so they can put their events here. - Buzz

---

Friday at 5PM is way too late to start planning, so get a head start now!

Have an event to share? Holding a concert or a meet-up? This would be the place to share it.

Links are especially welcomed.

Politics / Activism Perris City Council voted 5 to 0 last night to ban data centers citywide. The proposed data center at the Lake Perris Fairgrounds isn't covered.

Post image
156 Upvotes

Last night (Oct 13) the Perris City Council voted 5 to 0 to introduce a citywide ban on data centers. The definition covers "edge data center, server farm or hyperscale facility," so smaller ones are included. A final, routine vote is expected at the next council meeting. No one spoke against it, and during council comments at the end, four council members spoke in favor of the city sending a letter to the fair board.

Why the fair board: the Lake Perris Fairgrounds is state land outside city limits, so the city ban doesn't apply there. In August the fair board (46th District Agricultural Association) signed a non-binding agreement with a company called Global Stack to study about five acres for a parking structure, a helipad and an edge data center. The agreement describes a possible lease of up to 100 years (50 years plus two 25-year renewals). Nothing has been approved, and either side can end the agreement with 30 days' notice. Ventura's fair board voted 5 to 3 in September to end its agreement with the same company.

The fair board meets Wednesday, Oct 28, and has to post its agenda by Oct 18. If you want to weigh in, written comments go to [socalfair@socalfair.com](mailto:socalfair@socalfair.com), or there's a ready-made email at http://www.SaveLakePerris.com (Spanish at /es). It counts wherever you live in the county.

Sources: the Perris council meeting video and agenda (city website), the signed agreement (obtained by The Riverside Record), and coverage in the Press-Enterprise, SF Chronicle and SFGATE.

Recommendations / Advice Pumpkin patch for adults

• Upvotes

Never been to a pumpkin patch(not originally from US), but planning to go with friends (early 30s).. internet told me Live oak canyon is popping but very expensive and it’s only 15 minutes from where we live. The other option I got was Underwood farms which seems to be more affordable but almost 2 hours drive! Confused between which to choose, I am organizing the thing and don’t want my friends to have a poor experience or expensive time because of me haha!! Any help is highly appreciated!

Politics / Activism Why Are California Convenience Stores Allowed to Hide Their Prices?

Maybe you're like me and have been frustrated by walking into a convenience store or gas station in California only to discover that none of the merchandise has prices listed.

Want a bag of chips? How much is it? Who knows! You won't find out until you bring it to the register.

Of course, the problem becomes even more frustrating when you're purchasing several items. You grab a soda, a bag of chips, some candy, and maybe a few other things. The cashier rings everything up, tells you the total, and you're left wondering how much you actually paid for each item.

There's another issue, too. Without posted prices, how would you know if a soda that cost $2 yesterday suddenly costs $5 today? Stores can change their prices, and customers have no practical way to recognize those changes without keeping their receipts or asking the cashier.

California actually has a law addressing this. California Civil Code § 7100 requires qualifying grocery stores and grocery departments using electronic checkout systems to display clearly readable prices on at least 85% of their nonexempt packaged consumer commodities. Prices can be displayed on the items or on shelf tags. The law also provides a specific definition of a grocery store.

California Civil Code § 7100(c)(4) states:

"Grocery store" means a store engaged primarily in the retail sale of packaged food, rather than food prepared for consumption on the premises.

Think about that definition for a moment though. Most gas station convenience stores sell packaged foods, beverages, snacks, candy, and other groceries. Their customers purchase these products and take them elsewhere. Many of these establishments don't have a dining area or anywhere to sit and eat so how are you supposed to consume these items on the premises? Unless we're expected to stand in front of the cashier eating our bag of chips like a psycho, it's pretty obvious that these businesses are primarily retail establishments rather than restaurants.

Of course, whether a particular convenience store legally qualifies as a grocery store depends on its actual business operations. But shouldn't that determination be made by examining the establishment and applying the law?

I recently contacted San Bernardino County Agriculture / Weights and Measures about this exact issue. My complaint concerned Five Points Shell station, where the food merchandise is largely sold without displayed prices. Here is the response I received from Sara Sanchez Barajas, Supervising Agricultural Standards Officer:

Good afternoon,

Under our enforcement jurisdiction, businesses are not required to place pricing on their items. Businesses are allowed to sell items at the price point they would like. What is required of them is to inform the consumer of their total amount due. As a consumer you can request the prices of items selected prior to completing the transaction. When businesses have pricing or advertisement posted, they are required to indicate the price per item during the transaction and provide consumers with the lowest posted price for the item selected.

Thank you,

Sara Sanchez Barajas
Supervising Agricultural Standards Officer
Agriculture / Weights and Measures

I found this response rather dismissive because it generalized about retail pricing requirements without addressing the specific, obvious grocerystore provisions of California law. I understand that businesses are generally free to establish their own prices. That's never been my complaint.

My complaint is that consumers should be able to KNOW those prices before deciding whether to purchase something, particularly food. More importantly, the California Department of Food and Agriculture has already addressed this issue.

In a March 25, 2020 memorandum, DMS Notice QC-20-01, the department specifically discussed complaints about grocery stores removing shelf prices. It confirmed that California Civil Code §§ 7100–7106 establish pricing requirements for qualifying grocery stores and grocery departments, subject to certain exemptions. The memorandum also explains that individuals and county weights and measures officials can follow up on potential violations, with enforcement through the courts.

You can read it yourself here:

https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/dms/notices/qc/2020/QC-20-01.pdf

And the actual California law is available here:

https://law.justia.com/codes/california/code-civ/division-4/part-5-5/section-7100/

So my question is simple. If a convenience store primarily sells packaged groceries, why shouldn't it be subject to the same pricing transparency requirements as any other grocery store?

And if the county believes these businesses are exempt, shouldn't it explain exactly which provision of the law establishes that exemption? I'm not asking the government to control what a bag of chips costs. I'm asking that existing consumer protection laws be taken seriously and applied consistently.

California consumers deserve transparent pricing, especially when purchasing everyday essentials like food and beverages, regardless of if the store is a full fledged grocery store, food mart or gas station convenience store.

Whether you're shopping at a supermarket, neighborhood market, convenience store, or gas station, you should be able to look at an item and know what it costs before taking it to the register. That shouldn't be an unreasonable expectation.

Politics / Activism Perris votes tonight on a citywide data center ban (6:30 pm, City Hall)

Update: We've won!
Ban on Data Center vote passes unanimously!
Warehouse Moratorium extended another year.
Council has consensus to send a letter to the fairgrounds board!
The next battle: On to October 28th at the Lake Perris Fairgrounds!

---

The Perris City Council votes tonight on a citywide data center ban. It's at 6:30 pm at City Hall (101 North D Street), and you can also join on Zoom (webinar ID 832 7096 7568).

If you can make it, it helps to show up early and fill out a speaker card. Even one sentence counts: support the ban as written, with no loopholes for smaller data centers or new names for them.

One catch: the ban doesn't cover the Lake Perris Fairgrounds, since that's state land. A company there is studying an edge data center, and the fair board can end that deal with 30 days' notice. It meets Oct 28. So it's also worth asking the council tonight to send the fair board a letter.

I made a 4-minute video on how the Planning Commission closed the "just call it something else" loophole: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-hA_CxGRkE

More info, and a quick way to email the fair board: https://savelakeperris.com

Support Services / Resources I built a free senior resource directory for Southwest Riverside County — what am I missing?

I’ve been building a free local resource called Senior Support Finder for seniors, caregivers, and adult children.

I’m starting with Temecula Valley and Southwest Riverside County — Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore, Winchester, French Valley, and nearby areas — and the goal is to make it easier for families to find help without digging through dozens of websites.

The site currently includes 80+ local providers and community resources covering things like:

Home care
Senior transportation
Meal and food assistance
Caregiver support and respite
Assisted living and senior living
Home safety / aging-in-place help
Medicare, Medi-Cal and VA resources
Medical equipment
Elder law
Downsizing and senior move support

I’ve also been building local guides around the kinds of problems families actually search for, like:

“My parent can’t drive anymore.”
“We need help at home.”
“Where can seniors get meals?”
“How do I make the house safer?”

The site is free to use:
seniorsupportfinder.com

I’m still expanding it, so I’d genuinely like feedback from people around the Inland Empire:

What senior service, benefit, or resource has been surprisingly hard to find for you or your family?

And if there’s a local organization or business you think should be included, I’m happy to take a look.

Recommendations / Advice Fixing the Inland Empires housing problem

Good morning, I hope everyone is doing well below. I’m attaching a link to a project that I’ve been working on and I wanted to share it with people in our community.

I have posted here previously about my gripes with our housing situation and this is my attempt to do something about it and would love anyone’s critiques or to answer anyone’s questions.

https://useclear.org

My focus is on essentially creating a financial cooperative that members can use to collectively save and develop housing locally. The cooperative can extend credit to members and captures fees and revenues lost through normal everyday transactions like transaction fees from using your debit card and offer low cost alternatives/replace typically predatory lending options like DailyPay, cash advances, pawn loans, title loans, and etc.
