I hate this show!

Sorry this is years past but this show makes me so angry. I'm at the end of season 3 and I truly hate jess and all the cast. How the police and everyone blames Murphy for everything is just insane. How they think a blind woman just shot and killed a drug lord, drove her body to the woods and buried it and she's blind-again is insane. Then to blame everything on her when jess and Felix are the reason that they were forced into the money laundering. Ugh just makes me so mad. I've never been this annoyed by a show before

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER ... Spoiler

SPOILERS AND LONG TEXT AHEAD ...

I’m a little late to the party, but I’ve finally finished In the Dark. Although I enjoyed the series overall, I think seasons 1 and 2 are clearly stronger than the last two. The balance between drama, dark humor, suspense, and absurdity was simply perfect.

Starting in season 3, and even more so in season 4, the series becomes increasingly suffocating. The characters get trapped in their own bad decisions, the consequences keep piling up, and the humor that once provided some much-needed relief gradually fades into the background. We end up spending so much time immersed in their misery that we lose some of the enjoyment that initially made following their journey so compelling.

I also wonder whether COVID had any influence on the direction of the series, particularly given Jess’s prolonged absence. Her presence brought so much to the group’s dynamics, and I think the show lost something important without her.

In fact, I really dislike the direction her character takes. As self-destructive and toxic as Murphy can be, there was always a certain lightheartedness to her interactions with Jess and Felix. Their banter brought some much-needed breathing room to an otherwise increasingly dark story. Murphy could be infuriating, but you could still understand why the people around her loved her and kept standing by her.

What bothers me most about Jess’s character development is the way she seems to distance herself from her own responsibility for everything that happened. She claims that the life they’ve fallen into has become too much for her, despite having played a significant role in getting them there. She was the one who suggested using dirty money to Felix, and she was the one who killed Nia to protect Murphy. Despite all this, she eventually shifts much of the blame onto Murphy and accuses her of being toxic.

Ultimately, I think Vanessa was right: Jess projects her own issues onto Murphy rather than acknowledging her share of the responsibility. That’s what frustrates me most about her character arc. Of course, she has every right to walk away from Murphy and the life they’ve built together. I just wish she showed a little more self-awareness about her own choices and the role she played in their downward spiral. That would have made her departure feel much more nuanced and emotionally honest.

Another issue for me is the disproportionate amount of attention given to Joss. His obsession with Nia’s death stretches across two entire seasons, and I find it increasingly difficult to understand. Why is he so consumed over the death of a criminal and drug dealer, to the point that it becomes such a central part of the story?

What makes this storyline even harder to buy into is that, in season 3, Leslie obtains a video clearly showing that the group was caught in a hostage situation and that Nia intended to kill someone that night. Given this evidence, Joss’s obsession feels completely out of proportion. The amount of narrative weight devoted to his fixation feels excessive, especially when the show could have explored other, more compelling aspects of his character.

Then there’s Murphy and Max. After spending much of the beginning of season 4 playing with the familiar will-they-won’t-they dynamic, the writers finally bring them together, only to kill Max off shortly afterward. I’m not particularly fond of how this storyline unfolds, especially considering Leslie’s betrayal, given how hard she had been fighting for Murphy. That said, knowing Murphy, her behavior is entirely consistent with her character.

I genuinely believe that, following her trial and the testimonies she hears, Murphy begins to long for something different. For the first time, she seems ready to imagine a future beyond the chaos she has spent so long creating and surviving. She appears willing to make a fresh start, or at least to consider the possibility that she might deserve one. But with Max’s death, that possibility is brutally taken away from her just as it begins to feel within reach.

The final two episodes also feel strangely disconnected from the rest of the season, almost as though they had been written by an entirely different creative team. The performances, the pacing, and the overall tone all feel noticeably different. Josh’s murder, in particular, veers so far toward comedy that it becomes difficult to take the situation seriously. Rather than delivering a satisfying emotional payoff, the ending left me feeling disconnected from the story the series had spent its first two seasons building.

All of this is why I believe In the Dark still has the potential for a much better conclusion. If another streaming service were to pick it up, I would love to see a continuation that builds on what the series did so well in its early seasons while giving its characters a more coherent and satisfying ending.

Personally, I could easily imagine a revival set five years later, in a different country, with the characters having grown older and attempted to rebuild their lives far away from their troubled pasts. It would be an opportunity to explore how much they have changed, what they have learned, and whether they can ever truly escape the consequences of their choices.

And, above all, I would bring Max back!

Perhaps his death could turn out to have been a nightmare, or even a premonition Murphy experienced before the fundraiser. It might sound like a convenient way out, but I think it could work if handled carefully. It would allow the writers to revisit that devastating ending without erasing the emotional journey the characters have been through. More importantly, it would give Murphy a genuine chance at the future she seemed to be reaching for.

I would also love to see Murphy and Jess reunited. Their relationship brought a unique dimension to the series, and there is still so much to explore in the complicated bond between them. Their friendship was never simple, but that was precisely what made it so compelling. A reunion could force both of them to confront their past, acknowledge their mistakes, and figure out whether there is still room for forgiveness.

There are so many possibilities when it comes to these characters, their emotional scars, their choices, and the complicated relationships that continue to tie them together.

Ultimately, I’m not simply asking for another season. I’m hoping for a genuine continuation that recaptures what made In the Dark so special in the first place: deeply flawed characters, morally ambiguous relationships, meaningful consequences, and a story that can surprise us without sacrificing its own coherence.

I truly believe there is still enough potential here to give In the Dark the continuation it deserves, one that honors the complexity of its characters and delivers a far more satisfying conclusion to their stories.

They did it with Prison Break … so why not?

I just finished the fourth season after absolutely non-stop watching essentially for the last two weeks. Also, apologies if the flair isn’t the best one to choose!

I don’t have anyone in my real world life to discuss this show with and I am just like ?!?!?! REELING over the way it ended.

I’m sitting on my couch asking “how tf did we get here?”

I wanna discuss Jess and how I loved her and now I don’t! And Felix, the exact opposite! I think how unexpectedly the characters wound up in the end is my favorite part of this show…

If anyone’s up for discussing, pleeeease indulge me as I have so many thoughts spinning around rn hahaha

what murphy says about how he’s conveniently Nia’s brother at trial but not when he wanted to take her down is 10000000% factual.

the fact that he says SHE didn’t pull the trigger but it’s still HER fault??? HELLO???? nia was a fucking drug dealer who got what was coming to her?????? HELLO?? SHE CAUSED HER OWN DEATH??? everyone forgetting NIA WAS ABT TO CAP MURPHY??? HELLO????

and by that logic, isn’t Tyson’s death 1000% darnells fault too???? he didn’t kill tyson but HE allowed him to sell drugs for him????

im so incredibly tired of everyone blaming murphy for EVERYTHING. TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY OMG

edit: OMG AND CHELSEA THAT DUMB BIH?? BIH UR BROTHER IS DEAD BC HE WAS A MF JUNKIE AND BLACKMAILED PPL LIKE GROW UP?

Why not tell on Jess and does Murphy's voice annoy anyone else?

I don't know if its just me but there is something about Murphy's voice that drives me nuts. I don't know if its the actress' normal way of speaking or the enunciation she does as the character but it really bugs me at times.

Also, why didn't they just tell on Jess? Especially after knowing she just ran off?

Jess' car - 1st season

I binged the whole series in a short time. Wasn't Jess driving a Kia Soul but then later we see her driving a small blue sedan. Did I miss something or did the show just change cars.

I’m kinda toasted but I’m rewatching and I’m on the trial episode where they do the flashback of Felix hiding the gun in the church parking lot and Murphy defends herself on the stand after Lesley leaves and I had this thought. I think it would be kind of cool if they like started the whole thing there where Murphy was testifying and then the show played out from there so you could see how she got there.

Discussion how would you think about a nia/josiah spin off?

i recently re watched this awesome show. and i cant help but think a spin off could be great. i love the nia and josiah war storyline. we know that josiah was once a major part of Nia's gang. but they split off for some reason and now they are at war. i feel like this could be an interesting story. we could see more of darnell, tyson, sam, sterling, and trey. maybe we could even have a quick cameo of murphy in a tyson scene.

Murphy being blamed for everthing, I'm almost done with the last episode of season 3 so no spoilers for season 4 and this post contains spoilers up to where I'm at. FYI Spoiler

I'm towards the end of season 3 and WTF? She tried to find out who killed her friend that she cared about. A cop tried to murder her. Her friends stole money and that's how they got wrapped up with Nia. And why do all these great detectives think a blind woman was able to get the drop on the biggest drug dealer in Chicago. That video that proved Felix didn't kill Nia also proved that if Murphy had shot her it was in self defense! So does the little bit of evidence they have from her blood on her button. She should have stayed in jail, instead of escaping, got a good lawyer and she definitely wouldn't have gotten jail time. Anyone she *used", was using her too whether they want to admit it or not. Felix, Jess and Max all broke the law without any of her involvement. The cop guy going blind has a hard on for her because he's bad at his job! He fucked up. She's proven she's willing to die or go to jail for the people she cares about over and over again. I'm not saying she's a saint but every bad choice she's made has been to get justice for a friend or save a friend. Not one of those people is better than her but they act like she's the problem.

Who’s your fav character && why?!

I ABSOLUTELY hateeee Dene & Chelsea!! Dene is a fcking weirdo, lame ass loser! The fact he continued on with his job as if he didn’t KILL Tyson. I’m SO glad Gene caught onto Dene’s fake ass facade. He’s constantly lying & manipulating people. I couldn’t even watch when him && Murphy were hooking up. He’s so ugly & fat I literally cannot stand his ugly ass face. Chelsea was also so annoying I hated every part with her. When she ubered over to see Felix after he told her he had to work late, and then basically forced him to let her hang with him. She’s so desparate and annoying I can’t even. And then the fucking audacity to have SO much hate toward Murphy after her brother OD’d?!?!? Like hellloooOooo?! She’s so fcking stupid. He was an addict, she should’ve took it for what it was and the fact he relapsed && OD’d bc of his OWN actions. I do sympathize with addicts bc I’m in active script oxy addic. But Ben was just kinda blehhh. Some of my fav characters were Felix, Murphy, and Pretzel ofcourse!! Soo anywho- who is your fav character && why?!? I’m re watching this show for the 2nd time!!

Also— super random, but did yall know Casey Deidrick got arrested this year in Feb for domestic assault w his now ex gf?! (The guy who plays Max) just thought that was wild!*

***Edit: grammar

Discussion This Show Is Criminally Underrated

In the Dark is honestly one of the most underrated shows out there. On the surface it’s about a blind woman who stumbles into solving a murder, but it’s so much more than that. Murphy is one of the most flawed, messy, and brutally real protagonists I’ve ever seen on TV. She's a fully human character who’s sarcastic, selfish at times, but also deeply loyal.

The show juggles crime drama, dark comedy, and raw emotional moments really well, and the twists are genuinely unpredictable (which is rare). It doesn't matter which direction the show goes, there are always twists and turns that are completely 100% unexpected.

It also tackles things like disability, friendship, addiction, and morality without sugarcoating. I honestly don't know why it didn't blow up more. It is a hidden gem more people should check out.

Everyone Sucks and I Love It

Finally getting around to rewatching this show and I forgot how terrible they all are to some extent. I love it. I get why that’s a turn off for a lot of viewers, especially with the controversial ending/mischaracterization in S4, but the chaos keeps me hooked from beginning to end. Definitely one of my favorite shows.

Question Technology throughout the show

How come despite the show starting in 2019, the technology on phones and whole vibe of the show seemed like it was operating on technology and other factors from 2010-2014/2015? Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Spoilers Season 3 Episode 13

So I’m watching the episode that Murphy finally found Jess, and she’s telling Murphy about her grand scheme of faking her own death. Not gonna lie, Jess was ANNOYING me by how she was being with Murphy. So cold and uncaring. Just a straight up b*tch. I understand she went through A LOT but at the same time, she’s the one that introduced Nia into their lives when her and Felix stole that money. They wouldn’t have had to launder money or hold drugs if they didn’t take Nia’s money. So, really Jess is to blame and she’s an awful and shitty person. Murphy was just trying to find out what happened to her friend.

Also, Jess insinuating that people leave because Murphy is the problem is funny. They leave because they’re all shit people. Murphy didn’t ruin anyone’s lives. All she’s ever done is try to fix things and help her friends in situations that all started when Jess and Felix took that bag of money. It’s just been a domino effect ever since. I actually really love Murphy. Her intentions are great, but maybe she could work on her delivery and execution.

Anyway, I loved when Murphy kicked Jess in the chest when she tried to “console” Murphy. Let’s be real, she wasn’t consoling her. Jess didn’t care that Murphy was upset. She deserved that kick and so much more.

Especially because once again, Murphy put Jess above anyone, including herself. She’s going to jail for something that Jess did. Yes, she killed Nia to save Murphy but at the same time, she’s just letting Murphy take the fall for her. Also, was it Jess that let Darnell know that Murphy was even at the pet shop? If so, just another shitty thing she’s done.

Also, I really HATE Josh. He’s crazy and obsessive and super creepy. Why does he have so much power or leeway? He’s not even a police officer or a detective. He’s a consultant. But he sure acts like he’s an officer or detective. I wish someone would punch him in the face.

Spoilers I am deeply disappointed in Season 3

I can't believe they spent all that time and energy trying to find out what happened to Jess only for her to be like "yeah I just got tired of everything so I left". I mean I get that Murphy can be a trash friend and is the reason Jess' life got turned upside down but it was still a big let down. Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way

Overall Thoughts

Just finished this series & boy was this an exhausting watch😂 The writing was so nonsensical but I couldn't stop watching it. Josh has to be one of the most annoying tv characters I've witnessed. Jess was the only person with sense enough to finally get away from Murphy. As for the others u start to not even place all blame on Murphy anymore because those morons were willingly going along with her nonsense. Even going as far as to pretty much be forcing themselves in her life when she attempts to cut them off. I enjoyed Felix's character probably the most. Overall not so great writing but It kept me engaged. It manages to make u root for the core friend group even through all of their poor decision making. The entire time you just want them to actually have one good day for Christ's Sake 😂 It's a show I could never defend against ppl who think it sucks, because I kind of get it, again due to the ridiculous writing but I liked this crazy ass show for whatever reason. Lol ok rambling over.
