IJW: The King of Kong (2007)

So while I might not be a huge video game player, I still enjoy learning about them and I also enjoy watching documentaries in general so to combine the two, I watched the 2007 documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters.

I thought this movie was good. While I did like learning about these different games and people trying to break the records for the highest scores, I am mixed on the story. To be honest, I thought it was gonna be more of a balance with showcasing each of the two main people, and then at the end, then facing off with each other. It seemed more one-sided. But maybe that was a good thing in retrospect because you got to see someone who is so big in the video games who a lot of people considered to be a great villain and he played that role really well.

The show down never happened because Billy Mitchell is a bitch who was later caught cheating. He was eventually banned from Twin Galaxy's rankings because he sent in a fraudulent game play tape.

Meanwhile Steve Wiebe went on to do a very public Donkey Kong challenge at E3.

Billy Mitchell is still trying to prove that he didn't cheat and he's the best. At least I think. I remember hearing something about that. But if that's the case, he should try and get over it or face an equal opponent to redeem himself. But then he might not be the villain anymore. And I reckon he likes that.

It was an interesting doc. Even if you aren't into games the story of a niche competitive sport and the rivalry between 2 of the best players is enough to keep you engaged.

Absolutely love this movie. Not getting the face-off at the end is a perfect way to show Billy's true character and reinforce Wiebe's disappointment.

It sounds like you didn’t like that a documentary didn’t have the satisfying conclusion that a fictional story would have
