Meta/Advice Why is Whitney Peak being excluded from the promotion of the movie?
511
u/harry3232 10h ago
It’s simple. Most of the promos focus on the 2 leads. I do not remember seeing Willow Shields (Prim) in many of the promos for the first Hunger Games

u/underhiseyeonthewall 10h ago
Yeah, I heard she still had a blast, though

Lenore dove just isn’t that big of a character. She’s basically prim in the first movie. Shes important but Peeta was a lead and she wasn’t.

u/UKDragLover 10h ago
I’m sorry but certain fans are turning this into something it isn’t, this is such a non issue. Firstly, Jo & McKenna are the two leads of the movie. Secondly promo is just starting, they haven’t even had the big red carpet premieres yet or all the press junkets. Whitney WILL be there and included. Whitney has been in the trailers, posters & I’m pretty sure she is on the album too. The kind of racial issues in promotion of media fans are discussing certainly do exist, but I personally am not seeing it here.

u/wallcavities 10h ago
If people think Lenore Dove is the female lead of the film it's because they assume the female lead of the film has to be the love interest of the male lead, which just isn't true (at least not in films that aren't primarily romances, which this isn't). Maysilee may not be Haymitch's love interest but she's absolutely the secondary lead - she has more agency in the story than Lenore and she (presumably, if it's remotely book accurate) has more lines and scenes. It makes sense that the two lead actors have had a greater role in the press run than one who has a smaller role.
She's not been excluded - she's been in other press things, just not as many, which makes sense and is proportionate to her role. Whitney Peak is also booked and busy with other work at the moment so this might not even be a priority for her rn.
64
u/allshookup1640 10h ago
Lenore Dove is BARELY in the book. She has like 3 scenes. The majority of her presence is in Haymitch’s mind.
Maysilee is the female lead of the movie.
167
u/Latter-Block132 10h ago
She's not being fully excluded, but she's also not a leading role, so she's not being highlighted the same way the leading roles are.
169
u/Poncho_TheGreat Lou Lou 10h ago
She isn't, she has been in various interviews with the cast leading up to the release. But at the end of the day Joseph and Mckenna are the leading actors. They will have by far the most screen time, so they're the ones doing the bulk of the media.
57
u/tulsieeee 9h ago
Fr I wish people on Twitter would stop manufacturing drama about this 🙏 She’s been in plenty of promo, even recently. McKenna will just have more screen time as you said and she seems to be best friends with Joseph. It’s not surprising we’re seeing them together more.

u/Youngstar9999 Lucy Gray 10h ago

u/robot428 7h ago
- she probably was actually glad she didn't have to get on a 20+ hour flight to Australia to do a press junket that's going to be basically the same as the other press junkets but with Australian accents.

28
u/Asterid_dove District 6 8h ago edited 3h ago
For the same reason why we also don’t see much of Ben. Granted, Lenore is a more significant character to Haymitch, but she mostly lingers in his head. Wyatt, however, does have more screen time so my guess is due to McKenna’s acting credits (because excluding the adult actors, it’s safe to say she’s the most popular of the current leads. Production is using that to the fullest) and Joseph playing the beloved main character of what is the most anticipated film (since people have been begging to see Haymitch’s story for years) in the HG fandom
Edit: And of course, Maysilee’s character being just as important as Haymitch is definitely a factor. I was mostly including the reasons above to explain the marketing
17
u/meatball77 7h ago
Mckenna is almost as big of a character as Haymich.
Louella and Lulu are in the story more than Lenore
3
u/Agreeable_Royal8338 5h ago
Could be due to mckenna acting credit but maysilee have way more screentime than lenore dove AND a major character in haymitch’s story too
18
u/acc8forstuff 10h ago
She's not being excluded. She's been in a bunch of interviews with the rest but Jo and mckenna are definitely top billing the movie so they promote more. Besides, her role might be important to haymitch but she's still not the lead/biggest role in the story.
I don't get people who keep saying She's being excluded. I read she is also shooting another project so her sched might not be as open as the other 2 for the kick off but will be there for the big events. Plus, I think she'll be part of the OST. So I think she's fairly included in everything so far 👍

u/Reville_ Tigris 10h ago
I swear I’ve seen her doing promotion in several posts I’ve seen on this subreddit.
17
u/Captain_Thor27 District 3 8h ago
She's a side character. She won't be seen much. She'll be seen at the beginning, she'll be seen at the end. Maybe they'll cut to her a couple times in the Games, like when Haymitch comes out in the parade or when he's interviewed, or when the volcano explodes, but other than that, she'll be in it very little.
72
u/idelgado12 8h ago
I hate this so much. I like Whitney Peak's casting and I empathize with the fact that as a Black woman, she faces a lot of racist hate from people who want Lenore Dove to be white and not Black.
That being said, it's extremely frustrating and dishonest for these fans to lump the racist hate, with people saying that Lenore Dove is not the female lead. The female lead in the book/movie is Maysilee. Lenore Dove is the male lead's love interest. That does not make her the female lead. She is the moral heart of the story in many ways, but once again, that does not make her the female lead.
She's not in as much interviews/promo as the leads. It's as simple as that. I've even seen people angry at the way Joseph looks at Mckenna. People are saying that they are promoting Haymitch/Maysilee as love interests because of that, and therefore it's racist to Whitney. It's just toxicity at this point and I hate that these supposed "fans" are trying to drum up drama and negativity around this so close to the movie's release.

Seeing all the posts on Lenore Dove is interesting. I’m going to have to reread the novel to try and see what about her character really spoke to people.
31
u/FickleCook3639 10h ago
I think it’s less about the character and more about the actor. To put it plainly, I think people are trying to make it a race thing. “Why are they excluding the Black actress and only focusing on the white people?”
4
u/lilyofthegraveyard 4h ago
looking at discourse and the picture the og tweet used, it is mostly shippers being weird, as usual.
they are trying to push the narrative that even actors and the producers behind the movie are pushing the maysilee/haymitch ship - when it is obviously not true.
11
11
u/ClubEnough 9h ago
How is she being excluded? Just because she didn't show up at two events? I just saw that she's confirmed for two tours and I always see her in those short promotional videos with the cast. Now that the promotional phase for the film has started, I think there's a lot of rushing things here.
11
u/LucyySlayyBairdd Lucy Gray 9h ago
She’s literally not though? I’ve seen a lot of interviews with her. Maybe that’s because I follow a million Hunger Games pages on Instagram though. But Maysilee is the lead female character in the story, so ofc Joseph and McKenna will get the most press.
9
u/happy_pajaro 9h ago
Pretty sure Joseph and McKenna also signed contracts as part of their massive paychecks that they are obligated to do press appearances too. That's not in every contract because every minute of press costs money to pay the actors. I dont see Drusilla on press tour and she's been all over my feeds as the major antagonist.

Shes kinda a background charcater in comparison to those two.
Shes gale bascialy
While their katniss and peeta (just platonic)
8
u/astropiscez 5h ago
I wouldn’t even say she’s comparable to Gale’s “character participation” if you will, like someone else said: she’s more so how Prim was in the first book. Katniss tells us about Prim just like Haymitch tells us about Lenore. They both have a huge impact, but aren’t actually apart of what’s going on, if that makes sense
Still love her character, pretty much any time Lenore is mentioned when Haymitch leaves D12 I tear up & before he leaves when they’re hanging out tg I tear up. I’m a huge romantic, even when the story is so tragic, their relationship j hits sm harder🥺
4
u/No_Sand5639 5h ago
You're right prim is a much better comparison
And youre also right, nothing agaisnt lenore
1
u/astropiscez 5h ago
Oh for sure ik you ain’t meant nothing against her character, I started rambling in my reply lolol. I totally agree with you tho that the Haymitch & Maysilee dynamic is like the platonic version of Katniss & Peeta’s. I never rly thought abt it like that, I’m glad u brought tht up
10
u/No-Society9299 9h ago
I don’t really think she’s being excluded, lenore dove just doesn’t have that many scenes in sotr. she feels like a a bigger presence because of how many times haymitch mentioned her.
17
u/averydumbstudent 6h ago
Because she's only Haymitch's love interest. She's not the female lead. What a reeeeeaaaaach.

im gonna be honest, lenore is like barely in the book. im surprised she's been to as many events as she has. granted she's in it about as much as liam hemsworth was in the first one, but i dont remember seeing him on the main press tour run until catching fire

Just wanted to add something I didn’t see anyone else mention. Sometimes, depending on the contract, these events and press tour expenses aren’t always covered by the studio for actors. Flight, hotel,a small team, security detail and wardrobe can end up costing a lot.

u/SouthernJuggernaut90 5h ago
You could argue that prim lives in Katniss thoughts the same way Lenore does for haymitch but she wasn’t in promos and that’s entirely due to screen time . If whitney was Zendaya level of fame and charisma they would have milked the 5 mins of screen time for press tour promo. It’s pretty practical really not sure why everyone is making a mountain out of a molehill

Even if Whitney Peak played the main female lead, McKenna Grace would be in more press just because of how famous she is. McKenna is the most famous amongst the younger cast besides Elle Fanning, and at that's just because of age. At McKenna's age, she's basically the new Dakota Fanning.
9
u/PlanetSheenxoxo 9h ago
Here’s my take on this: Whitney isn’t being excluded AT ALL. In fact, aside from Jo and McKenna, she’s been featured in the most promo videos. However, despite LD barely being physically present in the book, Whitney was marketed as “the lead” (in the MOVIE, NOT the book) by several articles. She was also announced first, which got a lot of people excited about the fact that a black woman would be a leading love interest in an HG film. Because of that, people expected her to be one of the main faces of the press tours. So now that people are seeing Jo and McKenna everywhere instead, they’re thrown off by it. Yes, LD isn’t a lead in the book, but Whitney was marketed as a lead in the movie at first and people want to see her everywhere. THAT’S why people are upset.
8
u/Boyo-Sh00k 9h ago
She's not. She's a minor character and not a movie star like Elle Fanning that will pull viewers. There's no real reason to showcase her in promos when in reality she's gonna get max 5 minutes of screentime.
3
u/por_que_los_gatos Buttercup 9h ago
This is pure speculation but Whitney Peak was cast in a role for another movie that began filming this month, and I wonder if she is dedicating as much time to it as she can before SOTR premieres

Well whitney peak is playing a supporting character. She might be the most important person in haymitch's life but she's not a main character of the film.

She’s barely in the book. Why is this surprising at all? She’s gonna have like 4 minutes of screen time and she’s dying during half of it
7
u/ObsydianGinx Katniss 10h ago
She’s not the female lead. A love interest does not mean main character or female lead. Gale was not the male lead, he was a love interest. Lenore Dove is the Gale of this film. Shes not a main character and is barely in the film. You’re not complaining that the other two district 12 tributes are barely in the promotions so why are you fixated on Lenore Dove? Haymitch and Maysilee are the leads. They are the main characters, that’s why they lead the promotions.
4
u/Mysillybrainandme 9h ago
in reality, Whitney peak will likely only have 5 minutes of screen time, maybe 10 tops. it’s inevitable that Lenore dove will be a less significant character in the film because we won’t be hearing haymitch’s internal monologue
8
u/Otter_bo_botter 7h ago
Maysilee is more crucial to the story, is more important to Hunger Games lore, and is more popular with the fandom. She’s referenced in Catching Fire, is the presumed aunt of Madge, and is most importantly the original owner of the MockingJay pin.
Sorta unrelated to that… in my opinion, Lenore Dove is maybe one if not the worst written character in THG. To me she’s not witty like Katniss, or endearing like Lucy Grey. She’s sort of reckless, but in a bad way. She’s partially the reason why Haymitch ends up in the games in the first place. To me, Maysilee being the love interest woulda been a more unique choice, and maybe woulda better complimented Haymitch’s plan in the 74th Hunger Games… giving Peeta the chance to do what he hadn’t done and bring back the girl he loved.

u/Kenzlynnn 7h ago
I do think she’s being snubbed a bit which sucks complete ass, but also she as a character doesn’t DO that much in the story. She haunts the narrative more than she actually physically does things in it. I still think she should be there at LEAST as much as Liam was

Whitney Peak is probably busy filming other projects, and maybe just doesn’t want to do all this promo since she’s already been to a few of the events.

Where are Ben and Holly? He was only at the New York event, and she hasn’t been to any events at all. Not to mention the rest of the cast (I think only Iris was also in NY, but there’s nothing regarding Ellie or Maya).

To those saying it’s because she is filming right now Miami Vice, that is not true. They have started production but she hasn’t been there yet. Right now she is in LA doing some press.

Wait I’m curious, how do you know she’s in LA doing press and not in NY/NJ filming Miami Vice? Sure she hasn’t been spotted filming unlike Austin Butler and Danny Ramirez but that doesn’t mean she isn’t filming.

Bc she isn’t a main character truly. She may have been in haymitch’s mind the whole book but she was truly only in a few scenes.

u/Accomplished-Watch50 1h ago
Lenore Dove is kind of a minor character in the overall plot. She's only there as Haymitch's goal to get back home. She's there to drive him, but she plays no huge role in the story outside of that.
1
u/MandyMarieB 50m ago
I’m so tired of Lenore Dove discourse ugh. She’s bad enough as the plot device she is, but the fact that people are so obsessed with her and make all this fuss over such a non issue is ridiculous. Haymitch and Maysilee are the leads. The end.
2
u/Ok-Bee219 9h ago
Everyone saying it’s bc she’s not a lead but reminds me of Liam Hemsworth I’ve seen a lot of promo from OG with him and even good amount of the smaller characters and we have none really of them so far idk what budget is must be high like read somewhere 200 million alone for productions so usually paa is half so roughly 100 million so they can afford having the others around also seems like their going way more out for this film
6
u/moonlightlovers3467 6h ago
- The love triangle was part of the film’s marketing strategy. This trope was very popular at the time, so they needed Liam to be part of the promotional campaign to capitalize on it and attract fans.
- There are three films in the original trilogy. Gale may not have much screen time in the first film, but he plays a much bigger role in the second and third. He’s still an important character throughout the trilogy, so featuring Liam from the beginning helps audiences become familiar with him and establishes him as a character who will matter more as the story progresses.
- Liam was also very popular at the time. He was Chris Hemsworth’s brother, and Chris was hugely popular thanks to Thor, The Avengers, and all that. Liam was also in a high-profile relationship with Miley Cyrus, and he had starred in The Last Song. All of that brought attention to the project. From a marketing perspective, giving him that much exposure was a smart move.
Lenore Dove is a completely different situation, though. She doesn’t fit any of those criteria.0
u/Ok-Bee219 6h ago
None of those things are criteria Lenore needs to meet, though. They’re advantages Liam happened to have that made him easier to market. That doesn’t mean someone without those same advantages can’t be marketed for different reasons. Also, being connected to someone famous only gets you so far.
I personally think Lenore is more important in this story than Gale was (at least in first film) If Liam was sooo popular then why would he need more promotion then a more important character like rue for first film. He didn’t have to be in so much but he was same thing with Whitney it’s literally not that hard to add someone to promo to BUILD HYPE. That’s the point for people to care especially the non book readers.
I have to go to bed for work so byeee
2
u/moonlightlovers3467 6h ago
Gale clearly wasn’t that important in the first film, so Liam logically shouldn’t have been featured that much in the promotion for it. But he was, for the three reasons I mentioned in my first comment.
Lenore Dove is a different case. She barely appears in the book. We haven’t seen the film yet, so it’s hard to know how much screen time she’ll get, but it’s reasonable to assume it won’t be much. So there’s no real reason for the production to give Whitney such a prominent role in the press tour. There’s no love triangle (and romance isn’t even the main topic of the story), LD won’t have that many scenes, and McKenna already brings plenty of star power to the project. They could choose to promote Whitney heavily, but there’s nothing compelling them to do so. Joseph and McKenna are the leads, and the Hunger Games franchise is already hugely popular. They don’t need to push a couple that might only have three scenes together in the entire film to attract an audience. Yes, LD also has enormous symbolic significance. But the same was true of Prim in the original trilogy, and her actress still wasn’t featured that heavily in the promotion for the first film.
And Whitney is still being included in the promotional campaign. After Joseph and McKenna, she might actually be the cast member who appears the most. She’s not being sidelined, especially when you consider how much screen time she’s likely to have in the film. I think that’s pretty good, especially when you look at the promotional content so far. The campaign has only just started and there’s more to come. But some cast members, including people who will actually have more scenes than Whitney, haven’t participated in the promotion at all yet, or have barely been involved. So far, it looks like a relatively small-scale promotional campaign focused mainly on the two leads. Given that context, I really don’t see what there is to complain about. Whitney is involved. She just appears a little less often than Joseph and McKenna, while most of the rest of the cast aren’t participating in the promotion at all.
I’ve also heard that Whitney is busy filming another project, so she wouldn’t be fully available for the press tour anyway.
I’m guessing you won’t see this comment until tomorrow, so I hope you had a good night’s sleep

u/derelictthot Real or not real? 53m ago

Whitney plays the love interest. If wasn’t for Suzanne making it KNOWN in the book by saying sis I’m sure people would say it’s a love triangle actually I’ve seen that already🫣

And this saga was the closest Liam ever got to fame; his career never took off. I feel sorry for him, he’ll always be second-rate, always living in Chris Hemsworth’s shadow, always living in Miley Cyrus’s shadow. He’s literally more famous for the hate he gets than for his career as an actor.

Never said they do but your proving my point fact he was in bunch promo to be claimed nobody cares for him yet seems like people Lenore and her actress Whitney and they absolutely have the money to add more actors to press cause I’m not loving just the two hopefully they’ll add them closer to date.
-1
u/Dark_Knight-276 Maysilee 9h ago
In fact, the only one who really matters is Mckenna; Joseph gets less attention in interviews than she does because it’s his first role (which is interesting, since it’s also her first time landing a major role in a big live-action production or well-known intellectual property). I actually suspect that’s why Ben and Molly aren’t part of the interviews, though I don’t understand why Ellie, Glen, Iris, Kieran or Maya aren’t on the press tour, given that they are quite famous.
1
u/Ok-Bee219 8h ago
McKenna is not more important than Joesph 😂 she has so many credits bc acting since like 6 or something. As child can be on set so many hours and she has many small roles so one project to next is how her IMDb is so big like you said it’s her biggest role but it’s Joesph who matters. Joe is playing haymitch the literal most important person in film and before McKenna it would be finneas, Glenn, Elle, and Kieran.
1
u/Dark_Knight-276 Maysilee 7h ago
I’m referring to the interviews; since she’s a star, she’s getting more attention, though it’s understandable, given that this is Joseph’s first major role. To be honest, I thought more actors would be involved in the interviews and events (Ben, Iris, and Whitney have hardly been present).
1
u/Ok-Bee219 6h ago
They should be more present! Also like said this is like her biggest role so I wouldn’t call her a star in terms of every celebs out of cast she most known for the younger ones.
1
u/amanisdan 5h ago
This isn't McKenna's first major role in a live-action production or well-known intellectual property; she was one of the leads (I'd argue the main character) in the new Ghostbusters movies, and has been in a ton of other stuff besides.
1
u/Dark_Knight-276 Maysilee 5h ago
You're right; regarding intellectual property, I forgot to mention GB. it’s true that she and Finn saved the franchise with Afterlife following that embarrassing 2016 remake.
But in terms of live-action adaptations, Maysilee Donner and Daphne Blake are her two major lead roles; I'm excited to see her in both projects.

Her memory and the idea of her plays a huge role, but as a character she’s barely in the book at all.
This isn’t a romance movie, there is no reason to have Haymitch’s love interest as a main focus simply because that’s not what the story is about.

She isn't being totally excluded, but there is an obvious difference in how she's being marketed.

I'm of two minds. She's not a main character but she IS being excluded. When the original movie premiered, Stanley Tucci attended and I would argue his role is less important than Lenore's. You can argue it's because he's a bigger name in the industry, and that's true, but then it becomes a conversation about stifling new names and new talent. Edit: remembered that Willow Shields (who played Prim) was at the world premiere of THG so there is no excuse actually. Maybe she's busy with another project, idk.

World premiers are very different than press tours. Most of the actors will be at the world premier, while only a few, typically the leading actors and 1 or 2 extra with less press screen time, will do the actual press tours.

And who said she’s not going to be in the premiere? That’s hasn’t happened yet. This is just a press tour.

Oh, please. Same difference. It's honestly weirder to me they didn't get her to do a simple press tour

The world premiere is scheduled for November 16 I am sure she will be there just like willow was for hunger games but the press tour now is not that.

just because premier and press tour both start with p, does not mean they are the same. only the lead actors do press tours. she is not a lead actor.

I dont think shes being excluded, theyre just sending the leads. Haymitch and Maysilee are the leads of the film, its the same reason why were not seeing other major characters (like Ampert or Wyatt or Wiress or Mags) in promo. They're sending those who are top billed with the most screen time. LD is talked about a lot but only actually in a few scenes in the book
