Some rules clarifications and reflections from your mod team

So these were things we were discussing on modmail a few months ago, but never got around to implementing; I'm seeing some of them become a problem again, so we're pulling the trigger.

The big one is that we have rewritten rule 5. The original rule was "No "challenge" posts without context from the OP." We are expanding this to require some use of the text box on all posts. The updated rule reads as follows:

Provide some context for your post

To increase both the quality of posts and the quality of responses, we ask that all posts provide at least a sentence or two of context. Describe your POD, or lay out your own hypothesis. We don't need an essay, but we do need some effort. "Title only" posts will be removed, and repeat offenders will be banned. Again, we ask this in order to raise the overall quality level of the sub, posts and responses alike.

I think this is pretty self-explanatory, but if anyone has an issue with it or would like clarification, this is the space for that discussion. Always happy to hear from you.

Moving on, there's a couple more things I'd like to say as long as I've got the mic here. First, the mod team did briefly discuss banning sports posts, because we find them dumb, not interesting, and not discussion-generating. We are not going to do that at this time, but y'all better up your game. If you do have a burning desire to make a sports post, it better be really good; like good enough that someone who is not a fan of that sport would be interested in the topic. And of course, it must comply with the updated rule 5.

EDIT: via /u/carloskeeper: "There is already https://www.reddit.com/r/SportsWhatIf/ for sports-related posts." This is an excellent suggestion, and if this is the kind of thing that floats your boat, go check 'em out.

Finally, there has been an uptick of low-key racism, "race realism," eugenics crap, et cetera lately. It's unfortunate that this needs to be said, but we have absolutely zero chill on this issue and any of this crap will buy you an immediate and permanent ban. So cut the crap.

What if the Writing Press was never invented?

My question is that of the printing press never being invented, this could come from any number of ways like Gutenberg being stillborn to the first printing press being destroyed by the church, although it doesn´t really matter how the printing press is destroyed or never created in the first place.

What if Franz Josef was the one assassinated in 1914 instead of Franz Ferdinand?

Say he makes last minute plans to accompany Ferdinand on his state visit to Sarajevo, and gets assassinated in Ferdinand’s place.

How would this change WW1 and the fate of Austria-Hungary when Franz Ferdinand immediately becomes emperor?

What if Malenkov wasn't ousted as Premier of the USSR by Khrushchev?

In 1955, after a power struggle with Nikita Khrushchev over control of the USSR, Georgy Malenkov was deposed. In 1957, after an attempted coup to regain power, he was outright removed from the Praesidium and spent the rest of his life in obscurity. Yet whilst he was Premier, he was attempting industrial reforms to focus on consumer goods and quality of life - it's an interesting idea that a more technocratic reformer was denounced as a 'rightist'.

Let's place this at the start of his tenure (so that his triumvirate with Beria and Molotov remains intact) in 1953 - what if Malenkov secures his grip on power before Khrushchev makes his own gambit? Does he get the chance to institute reforms? Does Beria depose him instead?

What if the Ottoman Empire succeeded in making their 10,000 pound donation to help the Irish during the famine? How would the scandal affect British-Irish relations and British-Turkey relations?

So according to a Ted-Ed [video](https://youtu.be/JjhrN0FcHpM?si=EVO50bdCvn1IDU6D&t=216), during the Irish Potato Famine the Ottoman Sultan had planned to donate 10,000 pounds for famine relief. However, he was talked down to 1,000 pounds to avoid embarrassing the British Monarch Queen Victoria who had only donated a measly 2,000 pounds for famine relief.

But what if the Ottoman Empire had found a way to donate the other 9,000 pounds to help the Irish like through the Quakers who were providing humanitarian relief to the Irish however they could.

How would the scandal affect British-Irish relations and British-Turkey relations?

What if Israel was founded on Kaliningrad/West Prussia?

For me it makes so much more sense. The Germans were kicked out of that place either way, they are the ones who tried to exterminate the Ashkenazi Jews, most of the Jews who went so Israel in the beginning were from Europe. It seems like such a perfect solution. On top of it, the Soviet Union already had a Jewish Autonomous Oblast, so why not just move people around a bit more, as they were always doing?

Maybe all that drama and suffering in the Middle East could have been avoided, which means means no Camp David, maybe no Oil Crisis, maybe Iran doesn't end up as bad as it is nowadays, so maybe Reagan doesn't win such a landslide victory and is not able to make so many questionable choices. I don't know, it sounds like such a great timeline.

What if queen Victoria died before she had Edward? How would English history change and how would her eldest daughter be as a queen?

I mean her eldest daughter would be the next ruler, not sure what’ll happen to Albert and the empire.

Tips for this historical what if scenario I'm writing for a book.

Before we get to the what if factors of history, I need to tell you what this is for. For a long time, I've been writing a book called "Inner Beauty", a modern day gender swapped re-telling of Beauty and the Beast. Despite it being set in the present day, I have borrowed one factor from both Disney movies in order to add tension for the couple. Our beastly lady, Sophia, is, or rather WAS, royalty. I wrote down that Sophia was the twin sister of Frederick of Wales, the father of George III. Thus, she would have been born in the Holy Roman Empire.

Anyway, what I initially wrote is that as usual, she was a spoiled, selfish, and unkind brat whom history would not look kindly on. She was so high maintenance, that many were afraid an arranged marriage involving her would end in disaster. So instead, George II, her father, granted her a new duchy in the American colonies. Officially, this was to strengthen ties between the colonies and the crown. Unofficially though, it was to get her out of any European court.

Anyway, she arrived in the colonies, one thing led to another, and she ended up pissing off someone adept in dark magic. So, she was turned into a frightening monster. Unlike the Disney versions, this curse has no time limit and has given her immortality. No, the tension isn't in a race against the clock. The tension is in her and Nathan, the human guy, learning to trust each other. You see, this backstory is NOT meant to be revealed at the opening. It's meant to be revealed later because communication is essential in any relationship.

But today, I'm not interested in the story set in the present day. I'm talking about the what if question of "What if Frederick of Wales" had a twin sister? Does this alt past I wrote seem plausible? Or does it need major changes? And what would the changes be? I need to get her into the colonies.

What if the 9/11 attacks had happened in 1993

In February 26, 1993, a group of terrorists bombed the basement of the World Trade Center. The bombing wasn’t very effective, only a few people died and there was very little damage. What if, instead, those terrorists hijacked airplanes and flew them into the twin towers in 1993? What would have changed had those attacks happened 8 years earlier?

What would happen to Italy in WW2 if Germany surrendered first?

Playing Gary Grigsbys War in the West, I decided to forgo the Italian campaign and focused instead on Normandy/ South of France. Ended up defeating Germany without touching the Italians. And it made me wonder, what would happen if Germany was defeated before the Italians? Would the Fascists have fought on, or would there have been a revolution, and a surrender?

What if the Mongols conquered Japan in 1281, then expanded into Korea and Southeast Asia, forcing local kingdoms to pay tribute? By 1400, a powerful Mongol naval empire emerges, but rival Mongol factions begin fighting over control. Could it survive or eventually collapse?
