Testing

Hi guys! Are there any actual “testing” that can test for histamine intolerance? I can’t tell if I have it or not. I have a lot of similar symptoms but sometimes I flare and have anxiety and feel off after certain foods but other times I feel fine. I don’t know what to do. Do stool tests help know? If so any recommendations? Any urine or bloodwork? Would love any insight for this :)

There aren't any specific tests for HIt, in fact in most cases doctors won't recognize it as a condition. Oftentimes if you find relief with a low histamine diet and DAO enzymes that's the only indicator you can gauge if you have or are suffering from histamine intolerance.

There aren't many good tests for it. If you have it for genetic reasons there are DNA test for that gene, but many people with histamine issues have it for other reasons (not genetics) so it's not always helpful.

The main "test" is whether taking DAO helps you.

Here's a quick test for you. The foods that sometimes cause problems and sometimes don't if it doesn't cause problems when it's freshly cooked. In other words, not sitting around for any more than 15 minutes after it's cooked and you don't have any reaction. But if you eat leftovers of that same food and you have a reaction then it's a histamine problem when foods sit histamine grows on the food

I got blood work done that showed elevated histamine levels as I had a suspicion it was histamine from shortness of breath (I have asthma) and dizziness/vertigo. You have to find a functional med doctor that can help you, your average PCP unfortunately won’t entertain it. Look on the IFM website. I also did a stool test to see what my microbiome looked like and found that some microbes that produce histamine in the gut were also significantly elevated.

Best way to test is an elimination diet. Stop eating high/med histamine foods and see how you feel.
