A lot of what made the early builds work is that the house was 2 floors at absolute most. No matter what his ai was going to break down just given the circumstances of what happened behind the scenes.

The only real design flaw i see in alpha 1 is that you can trap the Neighbor for good if you turn off the power while he's using the elevator, i remember seeing someone accidently doing this on their first playthrough so they beat the game without seeing him once (honestly wonder if that's why they removed the elvator from alpha 3 forward)

Alpha 1 is 2 very tight floors. Half the damn house is missing. The issue where you can be on the other side of the house and he can't find you from the final game was allways going to be an issue. Alpha 1 was a very early build and all that

Yeah that's why i loved alpha 1, despite the wackyness the layout was still concise and very much interior based, alpha 3-act 3 messed up by having the house being so disconnected and segmented (although i honestly never had a problem with navigating it's layout like many people have)

I've gotten used to the alpha 3 and beyond house. But I think the vr game hit the perfect size for there's house. Helps that the way the progression worked meant he was almost allways near by when inside, unlike hn2 which could just get annoying with how often they look in the one area you needed to be in.

Agreed, best version of the act 1 house too IMHO

Perfect level of ridicules while still feeling like a home.

Man S&R was so fun, if only it had an actually good story...

Too bad it was held back by being a sequel to both engineer and secret, and also having to end when act 2 begins. Like if any time Was the time to retcon its now to give hn2 more of a story its self since now wuinton shows up like 5 minutes after nickey broke out

You can tell Tiny Build didn't know what to tell of new in the game, they don't know what to expand anymore it's so funny

Hn1 was never meant for children :3, nikita confirmed it was meant for teens and up

And teens apparently aren't children?

1

u/ScaryBr0 1d ago

5 vs 15 real old qhos more responsible

1

u/KubaGamer535YT 18h ago

both can do stupid shit, thats one thing, second thing i think nikita said it would be more for adults rather than minors at all, but it wouldn't change shit because horror was very popular back then and every age group would enjoy it. No matter how gory and scary it'd be.

Teens are still minors but don’t fall into the same category as children… it’s why teens are called teens and not children

HN1 wasn't meant for children cause no child could beat it without lots of help.

Honestly, even 'teens and up' can't beat it without a guide, so..

Thats kinda because of how the game was structured as told by nikita; where basically it was meant to be something akin to ready player 1 where a huge group of players attempt solving this mystery neighbor game, which this falls apart almost immedietly because either some smart aleck solves everything and people piggyback off them or you lack all that outsider knowledge and get stuck

u/Sammy_Ferr 1d ago

Actually he compared it to P. T. Silent Hills, many things in the demo were discovered through community help

2

u/ScaryBr0 1d ago

Yea I misrembered there my bad, but the point still stands that such progression just sucks for the long term longevity of the game

I honestly think a lot of puzzles in final game are overhated, most of them were very clear to me like the globe, the no guns allowed room etc. Only puzzle i genuinely found poorly designed was the part using the toy rifle to obtain the red key, it should've been actual targets rather than random objects

2

u/ScaryBr0 1d ago

The toy rifle red key puzzle is fucking insane, the only way to properly do it is to hit the last target then run into the basketball room so you can superthrow the basketballs and hit the lever to get the red key. That one doesn’t get a pass lmao

Now THAT was cryptic and hard for the sake being, to me everything else was crystal clear at least

Not true, in his interview with MegaM he says that he didn't give it much thought aside from expecting people around his age to play and was surprised with the child audience the game had gotten.

Hello Neighbour Prototype graphics and style+ Hello Neighbour Alpha 1 house+ Alpha 2 cutscenes and basement+Hello Neighbour Alpha 3 story

1

u/Weird_jokeyfella20 1d ago

So, just average Hello Neighbor fangame?

1

u/crazycabbie1999 22h ago

no because everyone wants the "sPoOkY nEiGhBoR iS dEvIl!!!1!!!111!1" story from alpha 1 and not the actually good alpha 2-beta 3 story

Alpha 1 and Pre Alpha neighbor have shitty ai, plus the pre alpha visuals SUCK 😭

1

u/SylveonGamingreddit 3h ago

firstly, the AI in Pre-Alpha and Alpha 1 are really bad

with the Pre-Alpha, it's because all the code was dogshit... and with Alpha 1 they restarted the project so it was extremely barebones (btw in Alpha 1 they literally somehow broke his normal state, he never goes back into his normal casual state once he goes into hunt or attack mode... also for some reason he cannot see through windows, I do not understand why)

secondly, while I like the old artstyle it is objectively unfinished, and it looks really bad at times as the quality was super inconsistent from artist to artist (just look at the shovel box and teachers desk in Alpha 1, the textures are terribly flat and dull, and the shovel mesh itself has a really really flat shovel head)

thirdly, I never liked the devil plotline and no amount of glazing it will make it a better story than it was, there was a reason they scrapped it

fourthly, all the horror was unintentional, their main goal was to make a thriller as DynamicPixels had stated on their 2015 Kickstarter and as Nikita had stated in 2015, it always was meant to be a tactical thriller puzzler not a stealth horror

and finally, they made the decision to remove swearing for a reason, even in the Pre-Alpha they intended on lowering their target audience sooooo you're just gonna have to cope with that

god it's 2026, information has become more widely available, the issues with the game has nothing to do with "old good new bad" or the artstyle change or story change, it's purely just how badly they implemented the tactical thriller puzzler elements... they restricted the amount of interactability with the neighbors house due to many reasons, and the AI got more and more botched due to the replacement AI programmer not being able to recode the entire damn thing so they could actually understand what they were working with
