an application to help hearing loss people

I have a final year project on mobile application development to assist hearing loss people, I'm deaf myself and wearing cochlear implant device, I've listed issues that I struggle with everyday and would love to make these issues functions, these functions I've thought are:

  1. speech to text and translation, like I believe it would really help very much

  2. sound environmental detector; sometimes when I go to sleep or shower I have to take off my cochlear device, which I can't hear doorbell or fire alarms and this upsets me so bad so I decided to include this function using vibration for different environmental sounds! and even I plan to make it personalized like the system detect a specific sound that user registers

    1. sound direction awareness, sometimes for me I don't know where is the sound comes from, so I believe this function will help in detecting the sound direction

but I feel like I miss some really helpful functions, especially for hearing aids/cochlear implant users, so I would like to ask What everyday challenges do you face that you wish an app could help solve? I'm hearing all suggestions so please be free to share anything!

Hearing aids crackling but only when I'm in bed. Why? How to explain this to audiologist?

My left hearing aid (signia) has started making crackling noises whenever I stream media from my phone to the hearing aid. It also sounds as if someone is clicking a computer mouse repeatedly.

The weird thing: it only started happening when I moved my bed two days ago and when I'm sitting in one specific position in the bed now.

The bad thing: I have ME/CFS and this one specific position is the position I am in 98% of the day.

I managed to see an audiologist today (mine was out of the house sadly) and she changed my filters and cleaned my hearing aids. Everything was perfect there. Problem resumed when I was in bed again. Any idea why it could be acting up? And how the heck do I explain this to my audiologist?

Oticon reveal issues. Anyone else?

I'm posting this on the behalf of my SO. She got Oticon Reveals recently. Generally good but there's a couple of issues.

First is a random loud sound. It has a tendency to hit one ear and then the other. Most of the time but not always when in the car. When in the car it's usually near a specific area. My only guess is a powerful radio signal but I feel like spectrum management would shut down something that strong immediately. Second guess is something to do with the road surface but that seems like a long shot.

The second issue is with bluetooth. It's with a Motorola Edge 60 Pro specifically. I tested with my S26 and didn't see the following issue. It's specifically to do with phone calls. The reveals have a built in mic ability. For both the user and the person on the other end it really improves call quality. However trying to do a phone call on the Motorola is a disaster. As soon as the phone call starts the audio coming through on both ends is loud rapidly chopped audio. Like multiple Hz. I would call it a digital buzz except there is definitely audio coming through in it. It sounds bad from both ends, but from the hearing aid side it's painful. That doesn't surprise me because I can hear it coming from them from across the room when it's happening.
SO as I said, I installed the Oticon app and tried the same thing paired with my S26. No issue. On the Motorola we tried a facebook call which worked perfectly with the in hearing aid mic functioning. We also tried an alternate dialer app in case the problem was with the default google one. Same ear shattering buzz.

Has anyone else encountered this or have any idea what to do? I'm not liking our chances of returning the phone to get something else. The phone says it supports BLE and ASHA hearing devices but I'm skeptical.

FSA contribution recommendations

My wife will likely be getting hearing aids in the next calendar year. My employer is just adding coverage of US$1000/ear that doesn't start until Jan 1st, so we are pushing off until then, but I was considering starting a Healthcare FSA with my employer to help with the costs over the insurance benefit, but open enrollment is soon, and we don't know costs yet. I'm sure she'll want a rechargeable and at least mostly hidden model, but I'm at a loss on figuring how much I'd want to contribute to my fsa. Any estimates on what our costs may end up being (would be through HearUSA)? I want to cover a bulk of the out-of-pocket with the FSA to maximize the tax benefit, but don't want to overcontribute as there is a limit to how much can rollover after the year.

I just came across this.
It would be neat if they licensed the app for those with their own 3D printers.

Wondering if this is normal?

Edit: the Audiology clinic has messaged me back and is scheduling me to go in on Monday to discuss other options. They said they definitely should not cause me that kind of pain.

To explain, about 10 days ago the VA where I get my Care gave me a pair of new hearing aids, they are Oticon Zeal, my previous hearing aids were Phonak Lumity Slim. And before I post the message I wrote to them this morning, the thing I really like about these Oticon aids is the fact that there's nothing behind my ear. I don't have a lot of space behind my ear and I wear glasses. Plus they have a much longer battery life. All right, following is the message, and this is where I was wondering if it's just me or if this is a normal occurrence.

I really, really did not want to write this message. I love these hearing aids, because I can wear a regular face mask with ease. They're not making my ears stick way out from my head. I love the fact that the case is rechargeable. But… I'm wondering if I can expect that the inside of my ears will eventually get used to the pressure? Or am I going to develop pressure sores?

The first day I had the hearing aids I was only able to wear them about seven or eight hours and my ears were hurting. And I thought OK they're gonna be like wearing hard contacts where you have to build up, so I did. Yesterday I had them in for 12 hours or so, and then the inside part of my ear, not where the hearing aid sits but just in front of that was so sore I could barely stand to touch it. And it was giving me a headache, which is kind of what started happening after several hours previous days.

So I don't know, should I be expecting that to improve with use? Or are these particular hearing aids just not going to work for me?

I really, really like so many features about them.

Is hearing aid possibly not configured properly? Out of ideas.

My mother got an Oticon Jet PX1 a while back and it has never worked correctly. We took it back to the audiologist 3 times saying it was not working; after we found it would no longer charge they finally sent it to be serviced. Now my mom says she can slightly hear a little sound from it, but it's not really of any help to her hearing ppl talking to her. I'm remote so been doing this mostly on the phone and it's beyond frustrating and ridiculous at this point. My niece was able to connect the Oticon app to her phone and used bluetooth to make sure volume was turned up all the way; no change. However - when my niece speaks on her phone that is connect to the hearing aid by bluetooth my mom says she can hear my niece loud and clear. So... the hearing must be capable of delivering sound properly; just not picking it up from it's own microphone(?). Is it possible that the audiologist did not program it according to hearing test results. We've asked the audiologist and they say yes, but we don't trust them at all at this point.
Thoughts on getting this working are much appreciated.
Also, we are on a very tight budget and this one hearing aid is a benefit provided by Medicaid; she only has one at this time. If we went to Costco to have them test her hearing with the hearing aid in place, and determine if it had been programmed, would they do that knowing we aren't planning to buy a new one?

Can Signia hearing aid microphones be muted when I use Signia Streamline Mic as remote control? How is it done? The purpose is to reduce background noise.

Widex Allure cost without insurance coverage...

Went to my audiologist last night. She offered me new Widex Allure RIC devices for $4,500. My current Widex Moments are 6 years old and ready for replacement. My health insurance has no coverage for HAs. Is $4500 a decent price? They come with a 3 year warranty that would include all tips, ear wax guards, appointments every 6 months for checkups/fine tuning... Thoughts? Feels like a lot, compared to the prices I see for OTC HAs but I like her service and I've been seeing her for close to 10 years now. I kind of want to keep supporting her practice.

Costco new Phillips 9050's — My impression after two weeks...

I have the new Phillips 9050's and started wearing them a little over two weeks ago. I am very impressed with the quality of the conversation sound so far. I am still having a problem with TV especially listening to a sporting event where they play background noise as part of the show—I guess it would be boring listening to an announcer with a quiet background. Any streaming I do from my computer is also not as understandable as I had hoped, and the same goes for my car’s radio(non Bluetooth).

I feel like I am hearing a very low-level constant level of static in my right ear andI hope it can be adjusted at tomorrow’s follow-up appointment.

Overall, and at this moment, I am about 70% happy. Maybe after more adjusting I can give a better review of TV streaming, computer streaming and car radio.

Found a really good deal on hearing aid batteries this morning.

Hey everyone, first time posting but I have been lurking for some time reading various posts. My hearing aids take batteries and I am always on the lookout for deals. I ran across this site lowesprosupply.com which i think is a part of the Lowe's home stores? Anyways they have hearing aid batteries pretty cheap. These things are way cheaper than walmart.. Anyways I signed up, placed an order and they are on the way.

Just wanted to say Hi and pass along what I found in case anyone needs batteries

Peroxide Dome Cleaning - Something to try

I'm not sure this applies to domes used by other hearing aid manufacturer but my domes are same regardless of whether you have Oticon or Phillips aids but it might be worth your while to give this a try if you have the same problem I have.

My domes are minifit double vent which are basically closed domes with the exception of two very small holes in addition to the center opening over the tiny prowax inserts. My problem is that no matter how much I try to keep my domes brushed cleaned and wiped with a small cloth, wax seems to build up that just doesn't want to come clean. When wax builds up in the holes my hearing becomes distorted especially in my right ear where my hearing loss is more significant.

By chance I ran across an article that said that by soaking the domes in hydrogen peroxide the solution will clean the wax off from both the inside and outside surfaces and any openings in the domes. I gave this a shot and in my opinion soaking them does indeed clean them with no apparent harm to the domes themselves. In fact, once removed from the peroxide, rinsed and dried with a soft, clean, cloth, the domes, to me, look like new ones. I'm not sure how quickly the peroxide works as I just left them soaking for 3-4 days. Anyway, if you're experiencing distortion due to wax build up you may want to give this technique a shot.

Good News for ReSound Nexia 9 and iOS/MacOS 27

I got my new Nexia 9s at the end of June and was excited that Nexia is on the list of hearing aids that Mac OS supports natively. My previous aids (ReSound Linx3D) could run audio from the Mac only via the TV Streamer. Anyway, my hopes were dashed when my iPhone couldn't/wouldn't hand off audio to either my iPad or MacBook Pro. So, for a few months, I was using the new hearing aids with the iPhone only and used Airpods for the iPad and MBP.

But wait! Today I upgrade all my devices to iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and MacOS 27. Now there's seamless handoff among them, keeping in mind that handoff doesn't occur for very brief sounds (such as notifications).

If you've wanted better audio handoff in the Apple ecosystem, consider upgrading all your devices. YMMV.

new molds suctioning to ear??

i recently got new earmolds from my audio and they’re super cute! we wanted to plug the vents up because i’m rapidly losing hearing and my old molds had really large vents. the new molds came w vent plugs instead of j the vent smaller which was fine i mean its not like it rlly mattered to me but then one fell out!! they didn’t send a replacement of the same size j either larger than the other ear or the next smallest which is fully closed. i’ve been using the fully closed just to be safe but the molds have been like suctioning to my inner ear now 😭 my right ear feels much more occluded which was the case w the slightly opened vent plugs too but its much more noticeable now and they keep suctioning!!!!!!!!!! i pulled them out the other day and it gen was so suctioned it like hurt for a sec to take out. I’ve been considering asking to do full shell instead of what i have rn (skeleton) bc i got colored molds for the first time and wanna show off. should i see if we can either just fully closed the vent or have it so its not vent plugs? 😀

once i take my hearing aids out now too my ears feels much plugged. maybe just bc i have loss at every frequency (cookie bite to near flat loss now)

is it always just gonna suction?? i clean my ears frequently because i have small ear canals and i HATE the feeling of my ears being even slightly moist

Does this exist?

I'm trying to figure out if what I want exists.

Relatively normal hearing in left ear, severe deafness in right ear.

I need new hearing aids and I'm completely confused about the market and options.

I started using 2 hearing aids in 2021 - I've only used Widex Moment hearing aids. Apparently the noise in my right ear prevented my left ear from processing sound correctly, but I don't want to give up stimulation in my right ear.

I've never used any CROS device before.

The audiologist recommended 2 Signia hearing aids with an AMPCROS. But she only handles Signia and is out of network :(

I've calling around but no one is helpful or has demos for me to try. Maybe I'm using the wrong language?

I'm trying to figure out if what I want exists.

o Best possible hearing aids for a wide spectrum of sound and noise reduction / word acuity

o Uses AMPCROS

o Work well with Android phones

o Stream Bluetooth

o Ideally connect to TV in some way

o Use lithium batteries instead of rechargable

Does anyone have or know of something like this? I'm doing the legwork and research, but I would welcome any advice. Thank you so much.

Resound Hearing aids Android 16

I am having problems using my Resound hearing aids and bluetooth through Android 16. The ringer volume function does not work properly and is halting and freezes up and it does not switch to the phone hands free speaker either. Only when I turn Bluetooth off then the ringer volume works through the speaker on phone without freezing. I used the Resound 3D app and installed the hearing aids but there is a major bug somewhere that jams the device and have to reboot the phone.

What will the Phillips 9060’s compare to!

I have heard that they are coming to Costco, so my question is what will they compete with? Are they going to be full Oticon Intent 1’s with some Reveal features? What are your thoughts?

First time hearing aid user after 36 years of hereditary moderate to severe cookie bite hearing loss. Starkey AI+ 24.

Just got fitted for them this morning, and I'm still processing this.

I have moderate-severe cookie bite hearing loss in a very text book pattern, meaning I'm missing roughly 50% of my mid range frequencies. It's hereditary. My grandfather couldn't hear, my mom can't hear, my brother can't hear, my cousins uncle etc can't hear. It's all deaf all the way down on that side of the family.

My brother took the plunge about 5 years ago. My mom about 4. I put it off for whatever reason. Probably because I'm typically averse to change and I did'nt want the stigma of my invisible disability becoming immediately visible to people.

I was fully ready to go to Costco to get some Jabras for a few grand, but last minute I looked and it turns out hearing aids are now covered by my insurance. So I called my audiologist I had a test done with in 2023, and they were booked through the end of November, except for one cancellation literally the next day. I snagged that appointment asap. Very lucky.

It took 3 weeks to get my custom molds in and get a fitting appointment for this morning.

In the end I was on the hook for a couple grand, a little less than the Costco hearing aids and have a more comprehensive fitting service (multiple appointments over the course of the year) and the top of the line Starkey's with the AI neural network.

Moral of the story, ALWAYS check your insurance just to be sure before you pay out of pocket. You might be pleasantly surprised, or you might not.

Some thoughts on my first 4 hours with them. They're currently set to roughly 45% of the gain I "need" to bring my hearing inline with "normal" baselines, and it will increase slowly over the next 45 or so days.

I feel like I'm eavesdropping on people. I can hear conversations 15 feet behind me clear as day.

I can separate different conversations in a crowded deli. I was in line with about 5-6 other people and I heard what each individual person ordered. There was at least 8 or 9 different people talking at once and I heard all of them. It was a bit of an information overload.

The floor boards are loud.

The fish tank is loud. Had to order a quieter aerator.

The fridge makes noise I guess?

The wood wick candle on my desk sounds like a roaring bonfire right next to me. Out of curiosity I turned it up to 100% just to see what that was like and what the fuck is even that?!

Seltzer water is loud. Had no idea about that.

My mechanical keyboard is obnoxiously loud.

Music sounds kinda like ass in them when it's streamed directly to them but that's to be expected with the driver size and that it's tuned to human speech, not deep bass and soaring highs.

BUT when listened to on the car stereo it sounded good. Different, much less warm and bass driven (because I'm missing the mids) Playing with the gain slider was like eqing it in real time. Wild stuff. I will listen to my record player with really nice speakers after work and see how I like it.

I'm not sure why they can't replicate those sounds with the direct stream, but I digress. Probably the audio driver/decoder in conjunction with the physical drivers.

Chip bags are stupidly loud, I want to know who invented that bullshit.

I fucking STOMP around. I'm a loud mother fucker.

My 2 stroke dirt bike surprisingly sounds pretty much the same. A little more ringing in the exhaust note and I can hear the engine itself moving a little more, but largely the same.

The rain on the hardtop of my wrangler sounded like fire crackers. The sound had so much texture, it was wild.

Anything else I should listen to? I know it will take a couple weeks to get used to this, but it definitely sounds overwhelming right now, and I now believe my brother when he said you'll be asleep on the couch by 6 pm.

Can hearing aids help with Alzheimer’s symptoms?

Hey r/hearingaids, a question for y'all.

My grandpa is in his late 80s and has Alzheimer's. Over the past few years, his hearing has gotten noticeably worse, and we're trying to figure out whether hearing aids would still be worth trying at his age. He was a musician for pretty much his whole life so this has really been affecting his mental health.

He's also had pretty poor vision his whole life and has worn glasses since he was a kid. Between his hearing, eyesight, and Alzheimer's, it's becoming really difficult for him to communicate or stay involved in conversations.

One thing I've noticed is that sometimes it's hard to tell whether he's actually confused or just can't hear what someone is saying. He'll give answers that don't really make sense, but I wonder how much of that is because he missed the question entirely??

We're considering getting him an appointment with an audiologist, but my family was curious whether anyone here has gone through something similar with an older parent or grandparent who also has dementia-like symptoms.

Did hearing aids make a noticeable difference in their ability to communicate or engage with family? Was it difficult getting them used to wearing them, especially with memory issues?

Also curious if there are particular types of hearing aids that are easier for someone with Alzheimer's to manage, or anything else that's helped.

Would really appreciate hearing about anyone's experience.

Costco Jabra Enhance pro 20 am I really the only one?

I have had these hearing aids for a few years now and I have returned them to be fixed 1 or 2 times a year. I had one of them slowly get lower and lower till I couldn't hear with them, I had them power on and off 2 to 3 times a day so I would here the damn beeping when it powers on , I would have only one of them turn volume down to bags making noise or some words would make the volume go all way down and then turn back up, but these sounds where not even that loud, I have them stop working with my Bluetooth sound to my phone, Sometimes when they are in the charging case they connect to the phone and disconnect over and over and I will get no stop notifications. I tried as a test to holding them down incase they were not seated right all way down and it still did it.

every time I returned them and they send them off and I get a refurbish one back I guess not sure, I would get one of these problems or 2 at the same time. The last time I returned them they told me someone said I think it was the rep for Jabra that I should go to the ear doctor cause this keeps happening.... I was a little mad about that I asked did you tell them that some of the issues are powering on and off I also swapped ear placement for some of the issues and it was the device. and I did go to an ear doctor they wont test another seller product they want me to buy from them first.

I asked them in the past am I the only one this is happing to or do they have a lot of issues with this model. They said its only me I know even if they were they may not tell me.
I'm asking now cause I made an appointment again cause One of my hearing aids are not working again I hope its just clogged mics cause I can hear blue tooth sounds even though I change the wax guards, but Im scared its more cause the Bluetooth sounds are 20% of the volume then of the other hearing aid. I feel like the Rep asking me to go see a doctor for power going on and off or one of them losing sound to noise that's not that loud is not a good sign that will be helping me again so easily .

Accessories for Oticon Real 1 miniRITE hearing aids?

Does anyone have any recommendations for useful accessories to keep my hearing aids from being ripped off my ears while I’m at work? I have an autistic child that likes to pull my stuff off my head (glasses, hearing aids, hair ties, etc) and I need something to hold them to my head so my learner doesn’t rip them out. Bonus points if it’s cute accessories too. Thank yall!
