Help Which pad expose gyro to Steam Input without needing a separate driver

Trying to get gyro aiming working on PC without a stack of middleware. On the Switch side it just works. On PC it seems to come down entirely to whether the pad reports gyro in a way Steam recognizes and if it doesn't you're into third party tools and per game configs.

I'd rather buy the pad that works than fight the software. So which ones report gyro natively to Steam Input, and is there a pattern, or is it brand by brand and firmware by firmware?

Also happy to be told this is a solved problem now and i'm working from old information.

Dualshock 4 has stellar gyro that just works on steam input.

Paired the board into a PSVR AIM controller since the gyro in th AIM can't be reverse engineered for whatever reason.

Did the trigger and face buttons map over cleanly or did you have to rewire stuff?

I basically used a breakout board to wire a custom button right on the grip just under the trigger. Easy access to hold/release/toggle the gyro when I need it.

Its nothing glamorous. It basically behaves as two seperate controllers. Kind of like how steam input detects left and right joycons seperately.

I previously rehoused this same DS4 into a nerf pistol. Wired custom buttons for everything right stick x-axis included. It was ultimately a failure, but I learned a lot.

Thats not how it works.

If the game accepts gyro, such as the finals or fornite, then you don't need steam input. If the game doesn't accept gyro, you need middleware, such as steam and per game configs, because games have different sens. And that's gyro to joystick because gyro to mouse has other issues.

There is always middleware and per game configs for the games that do not have gyro support. There is nothing that "Just works" besides the 5 or 6 games that have full support and it will be like that for years.

Fair, that's a better way to put it than i did. So it really comes down to whether steam sees the gyro at all and anything without native support needs a per-game config no matter what pad you've got. How much tuning do you end up doing per game? like a few minutes or a whole evening of fiddling with sens

Steam has nothing to do with native gyro support. Fornite is not on steam.

For games without support, it depends on if the game allows mixed input or not. Gyro to joystick is not good (mostly), so I use it as mouse. But games do not allow mixed input as in mouse at the same time as pressing the bumpers and using the stick, so I dont mix inputs and bind all my buttons to keyboard keys and the stick to mouse as well.

I go and bind the dpad to arrows, and then go into the game and rebind whatever action i want on the dpad such as grenades or fire mode, to the arrows. This allows me to follow in game prompts instead of trying to remember which button is G for grenades.

Finding the sens its not as hard once you learn how to, as the information you need is on mouse-sensitivity.com The sens is the easiest part. Hiding the controller so I dont have double inputs and choosing what button will do what, is where the difficulty is. However, since I have been using the same hiding + full mnk method, it takes me 10 min to make a config for a game.

Okay, hiding part is what i was missing. i assumed the hard part would be getting the sens right, not stopping the game from seeing the controller and the mouse at the same time.

One of the 8Bitdo pads has native steam Input, DS4 and Dualsense also do and of course the original Steam Controller and the new one do as well. I think the switch controller also works but I don't have first hand experience with it.

If you're sticking with steam just get a steam controller, though pricey, or the horipad for steam, which is cheaper, or the 8bitdo ones but I forgot which

If you wanna use native gyro support for the dozen or so games that have it then get a ds4 or dualsense controller, though you might need a middleware to make it look like an xbox controller for other games though steam can also handle that, gamesir controllers typically have a ds4 mode also in their controllers

Both of these are the only options available until microsoft get their head out of their ass and implement gyro on their controller

Other than the steam controller, the 8bitdo ultimate 2 wireless(not the Bluetooth, they have confusing naming) is fully supported in steam input. I only use their software to update the controller firmware, everything else I handle with steam input.

You still need per game configs, but it only takes 5 minutes or so to set up for a game.

Besides of Steam Input , if you want gyro that always works then you should check out Alpakka controller by Input Labs

If ur trying to get gyro working, hit windows key and r which will bring up run prompt. Put services.msc and scroll down in services menu to find gameinput service. Right-click and press properties and change start up type from manual to automatic. Next, press start if service is not started. Uninstall 3rd party virtual controller and 3rd party game input services as gameinput service is built-in and it pairs with gyro features natively. If u don't Uninstall 3rd party virtual controller and game input, ur gyro features won't work.
