I'm by no means a completist , but these are the physical copies of their work I have. I saw them 3 times of course I,d sooner have seen them more. Does anyone know what the members of the band did next or are doing? I wear the shirts to European and UK festivals and gigs.

Experience An indigenous Goths Vent about a Terrifying Experience

Indigenous guy (20) and I’ve been living in Portland for a while now and I’m super connected to the Goth scene, it’s been a really fun ride. As well as much bigger than I expected. Me and my girlfriend met through a local tributes and parties in the scene, but there are lots of experiences indigenous, and POC goths experience as a whole and I please just want to vent here.

There was an small opening in our neighborhood, I’m not really sure what it was for and it lasted for about a day-a few mini shops opened up selling a “witch’s” hut of antiques as well as merchandise from bands I haven’t even heard of-I want to know if anyone else is aware of what I’m talking about, since Oregon seems to have a larger community of goths.

Me and my girlfriend went to a small opening used in an older building-seemed very interesting and had really obscure goth band tees and metal apparel that she was super excited to see-and I loved the jewelry of what I came for. Gf said she was going to a bookstore right next door while I stayed to get her favorite tees through text.

The front counter was one of the most terrifying experiences in my life, as they seemingly stalked me throughout the store with a weird look the whole time. The two people up front, a white couple who said they refused to take anything from me, or “Shit from the prairie” and threatened to make sure I don’t make it out to the store if I don’t leave immediately.

I met my girlfriend at the other side of the street as she seemed to just finished crying-as she told me everyone was giving her strange looks and kept questioning where she was from, why she was here, and wanting her to leave-and it made her panic, this made me worried for her to the point where we decided to never come to these openings ever again.

I’m sorry if this is long or doesn’t make sense-I’m still shocked, but please listen to POC goths and listen if we are uncomfortable. If you are white, please pay attention to these things-we are terrified most of the time and we cannot show it lest we are threatened.

Throwback Thursday Goth record covers creep me out (just sayin')

Especially In the Flat Field.  To a lesser degree Closer (Unknown Pleasures has been meme’d to death, unfortunately).

Why the Bauhaus cover?

It’s the terror of obscurity, achieved through minimalism and negative space.

Some aesthetic theory

Horror movies don’t scare me.  The only exception is The Blair Witch Project.

This is curious.  Other horror flicks feature teens chased around by psychos and creatures, but (SPOILER ALERT) we never actually see the Blair Witch, we only sense her through her effects.  Why’s that scary?

Yes

This is the terror of obscurity.

This type of fear is primal and never leaves us

It’s the fear of what’s unknown, of what’s only partially understood.  Is it even real?  Are you brave enough to try and find out?

The terror of the Blair Witch consists precisely in that we never meet her.  We know her solely by the weird happenings on tape, by the slow mental collapse of the foolhardy teens, by the uncanniness, the sense that something’s off (can’t quite put my finger on what it is).

Haven’t we been by this clearing already?  I think I hear that creek again?

It’s why, when I want to be spooked, I watch paranormal documentaries, especially bizarre disappearances, UFO close encounters, and cryptid sightings.

The grey aliens aren’t scary because they chase the abductees around with hatchets and chainsaws.  They’re scary because of their robotic affect, their mysteriousness and elusiveness.  They’re scary because of their cold-bloodedness and amorality.

It’s the horror of the cryptic, the esoteric, the hidden and forbidden.  You aren’t supposed to solve the riddle.  Don’t try.

It’s why In the Flat Field cover freaks me the fuck out

When you look at the cover, you get the feeling that you’re looking at something you shouldn’t be seeing.

It’s a naked guy in a room blowing a horn.  The window is open and the sun is shining.  Does he not care about his privacy?

Does he just like playing musical instruments naked for some reason?

Is he performing an occult ritual?  Is he trying to summon Satan?

Color and texture are info.  Black/white and graininess are a lack of info.  Featurelessness is next to darkness.

Minimalism and negative space are the secret sauce

Minimalism is a big part of both goth and indie music and cover art.

Minimalism is holding back and doing less when you could do more, so that the elements you do include speak all the louder.

Art that refuses to be busy and ornate creates negative space.  All the space that could’ve been filled in stands cold and stark.

The core idea is that absence and void can themselves be presence.  And when presence is expected, absence raises (perhaps unanswerable) questions, letting the viewer's imagination fill in the gaps.

Why this creates horror

It goes back to obscurity - after all, what is childhood fear of the dark, if not fear of negative space?  Fear of “we know not what.”  When we’re in the dark, our survival-oriented brains project malevolent entities - monsters and demons.

Once we flip the light switch, we know, and our fears are calmed.

I think I’ll go spin In the Flat Field, and watch The Blair Witch Project again sometime between now and October 31.  I encourage you to do the same.

Local Scene Melbourne, AU - what's running at the moment?

Visiting Melbourne 18–25 November from Sydney, with the weekend of the 21st–22nd free.

After the goth/darkwave/post-punk end of things - club nights, DJ nights, bars where the music's actually right rather than vaguely spooky.

I've had a look at the obvious listings but they're mostly out of date or aimed at tourists. Keen to hear from Melbourne regulars what's actually running now, especially the semi-regular nights that don't make it onto event sites.

Thanks gang!! đŸ–€đŸŠ‡đŸ€ŸđŸ»

Discussion For all of you concerned about AI playlists

Just listen to full albums as they were released.

It’s not hard. It’s how they were intended to be heard. Full albums can include compilations, which is how people found out about multiple artists at once for most of the time recorded music has existed. I don’t understand how or why this is even an issue if you actually appreciate the music and don’t just see it as background noise or an alternative to listening to the radio or you’re trying to rack up as many artists in your library as possible in a short span of time.

Why wouldn’t you want to listen to Only Theatre Of Pain and Talk About The Weather and Faith and In The Flat Field and Death Church front to back? Is that not why we’re here?

Experience It's happening and I'm not okay with it

Was looking on youtube for a good playlist, found one that claimed to be darkwave, and I was really into it at first, but got suspicious that it was AI. I looked into the channel that posted the playlist and I now have significant reason to believe I was right. They claim to be a radio project with all-original music but none of the artists are mentioned and it's clearly not just one. I could be wrong, it's totally possible that they're a group of genuine artists or something and if so my apologies to them. BUT- Are we serious? AI Goth music? Total oxymoron.
