MK2 Golf shudders violently only when hot when putting into 1st gear with clutch fully disengaged. Synchro issue?
I'm having a very specific issue with my MK2 Golf (fitted with the 085 generation DGH manual gearbox) and could use some advice before I start tearing things apart.
The symptoms:
- When the car/transmission is fully warmed up, shifting into 1st gear makes the entire chassis/body shudder violently (but not always).
- This happens with the clutch pedal fully pressed down to the floor while standing completely still.
- It only happens in 1st gear. Reverse works perfectly fine, and the car does not creep forward while the pedal is down.
- Crucial detail: Normally, you feel that familiar mechanical resistance when pushing the lever into 1st (the synchro doing its job). However, when the transmission gets hot, that resistance completely disappears. The shifter just glides right into 1st with zero effort, followed immediately by the heavy shuddering.
- If I put the car in 1st gear before starting the engine (with the clutch depressed), it starts up fine without any shuddering.
ive also noticed some leaks around the speedo cable entry point. Im hoping this will be fixed with more transmission fluid, but im wondering if it sounds like bad gearbox to you guys
