Beginner Help I’m at my wits end

EDIT TO ADD: thank you so much for all of the advice and encouragement. Despite what some may think, I did do research but a lot of what I read is very contradictory to what everyone here is saying. Obviously I will take this advice as opposed to the internet articles I’ve read. I was using the dunk test strips for testing but they’re clearly not reading accurately so I went on my lunch break and bought an API master test kit. I’m going to do everything I can to make Colloway, Ash, Johnny and Mr. Moon as comfy as I can.

It begins as it usually does, my kid won goldfish at the fair. I wanted to do it right this time so I got a 20 gallon tank, filter, some rocks and food. Over the past month I’ve changed the rocks to sand and added live plants and these fish still are not acting like they should. I’ve done testing every day and water changes accordingly and I just can’t seem to make them happy. They’ll get up and swim around but most of the some they’re just chilling on the bottom. Please any advice would be so much appreciated! I’ll add pictures of the before and after.

Pond Help with creative names for similar looking fish

Looking for suggestions on names for the two fish that are white with orange on their backs.

Like something that rhymes together, or a famous duo, items that go together etc.. - if that makes sense.

Right now they are Fin and Tonic but I'm looking for something better.

Sick Fish Help Red fin? NSFW

My goldfish's fin is red and looks swollen. Bringing water to be tested as i type this, but what are some possible causes? This is the 2nd time in about a month that this has happened, the other time it healed in a few days, but now its back. Ill add a photo of the last time this happened in the comments, as well as a photo of the tank. I'm worried its a bruise from getting stuck under wood

20 gallon tank (to be upgraded to a 55gal when I move + some more friends, currently only 2 in this tank) I'll add a comment of parameters as soon as I know.

DISCLAIMER: they will be getting a bigger tank, and i will be getting my filter and shit out first thing in the AM!!! but i brought them home on a whim so this will do for tonight (won at a fair, had ten bucks for ping pongs, and stuff at home from when i kept bettas). Regardless, i wanted to know what species of goldfish these are? nugget the all orange one is obv just a “classic” goldfish, but sushi has a BEAUTIFUL tail and the white pattern, im thinking she might be a comet? and then nugget has a black streak on his nose, not sure if thats a breed specific thing or just a little fishy quirk.. also any tips on how to keep these guys happy would be appreciated 🫶!!

(theyre pretty difficult to get pictures of so pls excuse the quality)

Post from 2 months ago here for her growth over the last 8 months 🫪...she's grown massively again. What is she & what do I need to get for her😭 I don't see this fish everyday as she's in my daughter's room & only check on the fish when there's something she's concerned about

This fish is almost 11 years old. It was sold to me for .99¢ as a regular goldfish, but clearly, that's not the case. She's THRIVING though🥺

2 months ago, I scooped her out & she got comfortably in the palm of my hand, tail & all. Today, she would overhang my palm with the entire tail fin.

Is it a comet that's just getting huge??

Sick Fish Help anything we can do to help this goldfish? NSFW

a few years ago (8? 10?) we put a couple of feeder fish in this pond. somehow the following year we still had those two plus 3 smaller ones. now we are up to 9. the original dad is still around (white and red, between 2 lillypods) but the original mom was a raccoon snack 2 years ago. (we have a metal mesh thing we put over the pond to protect the fish but that time they removed some of the wall bricks and got access).

the pond is ab twice this size, ab 3 ft deep, has a filter, and it gets fresh water added regularly. we give them goldfish food but seem to do fine even if we don't.

this orange fish started to get a big belly a couple months ago and we thought she was about to release a bunch of eggs but it's been a couple months, so now we are wondering if it's a tumor or parasites... any clue what we are looking at here? still moves normally some of the time but also spends time on its side, floating 4 inches under water

Fish Pics does my fish look healthy and is his belly normal?

Thumbnail

three of my fish are just regular goldfish and but not sure what kind the other one is. I’ve noticed that his belly looks pretty large and I’m not sure if it’s regular. Does anyone know what kind of fish this is and if it’s normal? i’ve had these fish for about five or six years now and they seem to be doing really good, but I just want to make sure that everything’s all right with this one. sorry the pictures are really bad. It’s so hard to get a clear one he won’t stay still lmaoo

also, I want to add something else. I’ve literally never posted on Reddit and I don’t know if anybody will read this, but I got these fish freshman year of high school and they were a tiny little feeder goldfish and I didn’t know that they would be alive this long. i’ve taken very good care of them over the years, but I literally have no room to get a bigger tank and I have four fish and the three goldfish are so huge and they’re only in a 20 gallon. I feel really bad all the time and I don’t know what to do but they seem to be happy and healthy I just kind of feel like a bad pet owner sometimes.

For the last 4 days he has stayed in the bottom of the tank and barely swimming. Looking at him, I do feel like his scales have developed some sort of white grainy appearance. I just cleaned his tank and have put a small heater that puts the water to about 73°. What are some procedures I should do, or products I should purchase to help? Or even some sort of diet change? He is 8+ years old, I’m quite anxious
Thank you in advance

Tank Help Any Tips

my mom has gotten two fish from the perry fair today. I have nothing, I think they are shubunkin goldfish, they pretty big already. I know that they need to be in a big tank and etc but I can’t afford a 75-100 plus tank and really don’t have room in my house for a big tank. Can someone help me with what I need to do. I have no idea but my daughter wants to keep these fishes.🥺

Hey everyone,

This little fella is one of the fry from my pond from last year.

While eating and having made it through these past few months, I feel there's something 'off' about the way this wee fella swims. He seems....heavy?

Therea no marks, nothing obvious on him for any external damage / disease.

I moved him inside for now with my other cold water rescues so I can observe the behaviours a little better.

I noticed that he lies on the 'floor' a lot but only after a crazy swim around where he acts like a toddler high on sugar.

Any ideas if this is normal or if there is anything I can do to help him?

Thank you all in advance! 🐟

NSFW - Dead Fish I really think I've killed my fish. NSFW Spoiler

Just fyi, this isn't about my recent rescues.

I'm so unbelievably distraught right now. So I had a bunch of issues a whole back but this is all new, I had a newly cycled 113 gallon for my two shubunkins, my 8 year old and her daughter. I rescued a couple fish several weeks back and after religiously testing the water I added them in, both commons. I planned on upgrading again but all these fish are stunted and slow growing. I tested the water daily and did regular water changes, kept ammonia at 0 and the nitrates were building, everything was good. So please don't be too hard on me if I've made mistakes.

There is a ton of filtration on this thing and everything was fine for weeks. I got the flu really bad and I went to bed early without checking on the fish, I spend the morning and afternoon resting upstairs and I didn't go check on them until late in the day the following day.

Well, I found Shimmer, my 5 year old shubunkin, Pearl's daughter dead, and it didn't look recent, she was like that for hours. The ammonia was through the roof due to her, I assume. I don't know why she died, it could've been a freak accident, I don't know. I found one of the rescues dead next to her. The others are in the far corner, my precious old girl was covered in white all over her body. She and the other were completely limp. I got them out immediately and put them into a hospital tub with methylene blue and aquarium salt. I do an 80% water change on their main tank. I leave them like this overnight. Today I did another 40% water change just to be completely sure the water was completely safe and added prime. The ammonia was at about 0, as far as my eyes could see (liquid test kit ofc). I put them back in once their scales cleared up and they seemed much better, seeing as the ammonia spike was dealt with.

I spent all day crying, I've been so upset, not only because of Shimmer who I raised from an egg but for the rescue that I intended to give such a good life. Just gone, and it's all my fault for not checking on them, or even for adding her at all. If I had checked and found Shimmer before the ammonia spike then they'd have been fine. I was too upset to even bury them, my bf ended up doing it for me because I couldn't hold it together.

Well, I take a break from grieving and go check on the fish for the billionth time today, and the other rescue is dead. Pearl looks like she's going to join them. She's back in the hospital tub, even though another ammonia spike was avoided. She really doesn't look good.

I'm so upset, I feel so guilty. This is all my fault one way or another. I hate myself and I hate this hobby and I'm sorry for the negativity but I'm really hoping someone understands and doesn't think it's my fault... I don't understand how this happened.

Questions Ryukin not eating much since tank move

Hey! I'm pretty new to fish keeping as a hobby and just wanted to ask the question to ensure I'm not missing anything obvious. I have recently moved my Ryukin from a 35gallon to a 50 gallon tank. There is one other Goldie in the tank. I've noticed since the move he hasn't really been eating much. The parameters have remained stable and I used existing substrate and filter from my old tank to the new tank.

Prior to the move, I had to treat the old tank due to my oranda (who unfortunately passed away) for what we think was an internal parasite. During that time my Ryukin seemed all good and has only changed since the move. I'm due to do a second treatment anyway in a week or so just to be sure all my fish are clear.

I jus thought I'd ask the question of “am I missing something?”

Behaviourally he seems somewhat aloof. He moves around the tank occasionally with my other Goldie but isn't very interested in food. Spends a lot of time under the internal filter or just stationary in darker sections of the tank.

Visually, he looks fine. He is a juvenile so is around 2 inchs long.

New 75 gallon I’m setting up at home. Got the tank, stand, HOB, Fluval 407, sponge filter and pumps for 450 on FB Marketplace. Rinsed filters with water inside canister, going to let it cycle for a few weeks anyways before adding fish. No parameters yet, looking for strictly technical/aesthetic critique

Sick Fish Help Admittedly no real idea of what I’m doing NSFW

I clean everything in the tank thoroughly once a month and change the water once a month. I last cleaned everything and changed the filter about 10 days ago. I was having algae problems and the goldfish was only staying under the heater so I figured I needed to turn up the heater and I got a bottom feeder to compensate for the increase in algae. Also admittedly only been going to petsmart, haven’t tested the water, don’t even know what to test for but I do treat it with what I was given from petsmart. The goldfish’s behavior has gotten considerably weirder ever since getting the second fish, the second fish has not come out of the whisky barrel once. Just looking for ideas, thanks.
